That’s why, at the Y, youth today are cultivating values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Whether developing skills, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

ABOUT THE YMCA OF AUSTIN Mission & Areas of Focus

OUR HISTORY

The YMCA of Austin was founded in 1952 and originally operated out of the Shaw Gym before it was later moved to the Goodwill Store downtown. In 1963, $723,000 was raised to construct the first phase of a full facility YMCA. The 34,000 square foot facility included a six lane pool, a gym, two shower-locker rooms, a fitness center, multi-purpose room, office and administration are-as. Further expansions were built in 1973, 1976, 1978 and 1999. Our current facility is 60,000 square feet and serves over 7,000 people each year.

CREATING IMPACT EVERY DAY The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence as a non-profit. It is only through the support of our hundreds of volunteers and donors that we are able to support and give back to the communities we engage.

SIGHT FOR STUDENTS Children in need of eye-care services may qualify for free exams and glasses with assistance from the Y. This program assists families who earn up to 200% of the poverty level but are not eligible for government programs. This program is sponsored by the Y and the Vision Service Plan (VSP).

MOWER COUNTY MENTORING Mower County Mentors can accompany their mentees to the Y free of charge. This gives mentors the opportunity to spend quality time together as they enjoy Y activities. The mentee is required to have a $1 Youth Membership and the mentors need to stop by the Front Desk.

ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGN The Y is the unparalleled cause for strengthening community because we are the community. We believe that meaningful change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. Each year over 50 volunteers assist in our Annual Support Campaign. Last year we were able to raise $74,000 which was distributed to support financial assistance to 342 youth and families, assist 1,800 youth with the $1 Youth Membership and in the form of quality after school care and preschool programming to over 310 youth.

OUR PARTNERS The YMCA OF AUSTIN is fortunate to have a dedicated group of partners that help us bring our mission and goals to life. A special thank you to Hormel Foods, The Hormel Foundation, the Yoga Studio of Austin and the United Way of Mower County for their financial and community support.

As the leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works side-by-side with our neighbors every day to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. To do our important work, the Y relies on support from members, donors, volunteers and community leaders. We have several opportunities for you to give back and provide support for your community. Board Member: The YMCA of Austin operates with a

voluntary advisory board that assists in creating a strategic vision and operating policies.

Annual Support Campaign Volunteer: Every year more than 50 volunteers participate in our Annual Support Campaign to enable their neighbors and community members who otherwise could not afford the fees, to participate in Y programs.

Program Volunteer: We rely on volunteers for many key roles such as youth sports coaches, class instructor assistants and many more.

Special Events Volunteer: If you have skills that you would like to contribute to a Y event let us know!

Contributor: In 2014, our members and community supporters donated $74,000 to our Y. Your gift can help us build a strong community.

Volunteers are encouraged to share their unique skills with Y leadership and staff in order to help find a place for them to utilize their talents within our community.

WHY DONATE? Every year through generous donations, families, children, teens and adults have the opportunity to experience the joys of summer camp child care, gain exposure to positive role models in youth sports, and pursue a healthier lifestyle in our health and wellness programs. A contribution of any size enables the YMCA of Austin to continue our level of financial assistance to individuals in your community. Together we can and do impact lives! You can make your donation online on our website at www.ymca-austin.org. Simply log on through the “DONATE” button. You may also send a check to the Director of Administration, YMCA of Austin, 704 1st Drive NW, Austin, MN 55912. Thank you!

POOL & WATER FITNESS CLASSES Splash Your Way to Health

LAP, FAMILY & OPEN SWIM LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE Lap lanes are for persons capable of swimming entire lengths of the pool. Lap lanes are reserved at all times for lap swimmers and may not be used for family swim. LANE DESIGNATIONS : When the pool is busy, swim lanes are shared. Please select a lane that is compatible with your preferred swimming speed. When entering, please wait until other swimmers have turned and started their next lap so as not to interrupt their progress. CIRCLE SWIMMING : When a second swimmer enters the lane, swimmers are required to follow the circle swim pattern. The customary traffic pattern is to stay to the right; that is to swim in a counter clockwise circle in the lane. When circle swimming, please avoid stopping in the middle of the lane. This can interfere with the progress of other swimmers and cause collisions. When stopping, do so only at the wall and preferably in the left corner. SPEED & PASSING : Slower swimmers should always yield to faster swimmers and be courteous of drafting by providing adequate distance between you and the swimmer ahead of you. Always pass on the left side and a pass must be initiated in time to over-take the slower swimmer before the wall.

OPEN SWIM & FAMILY SWIM SWIM TEST POLICY : Please know that all members 14 years and younger are required to complete a swim test with the lifeguards before swimming by themselves. To pass the swim test, youth need to be able to swim 2/3 of the length of the pool while on the surface. Once they have completed this, they will receive a red neckband that they must wear whenever they swim at the Y. The Front Desk will provide this neckband for them. FAMILY SWIMMING : Any child under the age of 14 years may be in the pool with a parent/guardian at anytime without a neckband. MAKE A WAVE TIMES : We have created designated “Make a Wave” times in the pool. During these times, kids and families may play with toys and floaties. The Y provides some of these toys, but personal toys and floaties may be used. Refer to the pool schedule to find designated “Make a Wave” times. TODDLER / PRESCHOOL SWIM : We have Toddler Swim times where families may bring their young children to swim with toys without fear of being splashed by older children. Refer to the pool schedule to find designated Toddler/Preschool Swim times.

LAP SWIM SCHEDULE

Our six lane, 25 yard swimming pool is available for lap and open swim at many different times during the day and week. Toys and floatation devices may be used during toddler time and on Family Fun Nights. A one mile swim in our pool is 35.2 laps.

Our Pool schedule which has open/lap times can be found at the Y Front Desk or at www.ymca-austin.org. The schedule is subject to change during the year, so please check to make sure your copy is up to date.

If you have any questions about our pool, schedule or aquatics activities, you can contact Aquatics Director Cindy Bowe at 507.433.1804 or [email protected].

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM Reduce Your Risk Today

READY TO MAKE THE CHANGE? The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with pre-diabetes led by Jill Wagner, a certified Life Coach and Diabetes Prevention specialist. The program’s purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people. Another 79 million have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes, but only 11 percent are aware of it. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in individuals over age 60.

Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. They can prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes when they are at high risk for the disease. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help participants adopt and maintain these healthy habits to help improve overall health and well-being You do not need to be a member of the YMCA of Austin to participate. To learn more about the program, visit www.ymca-austin.org which describes in detail the pro-gram requirements. You can also contact Jill Wagner at 507.433.1002 or [email protected]. The cost of the program is $429 but participants can choose to pay the full cost at the start of the program or in monthly payment of $37.35. Financial assistance may also be available to those who qualify. We are currently enrolling for this program, so sign up today!

PRESCHOOL EDUCATION

The YMCA of Austin offers preschool education to children ages 33 months to 5 years. When your child participates in our YMCA early childhood education program, they benefit from a comprehensive, carefully designed, and research based model provided by The Creative Curriculum.

Creative Curriculum is a comprehensive early childhood educational system that emphasizes a practical, easy to understand approach to working with children. It promotes the use of interest areas as a way of providing experiences that promote cognitive, social, physical and language development. The core components are literacy, math, science, social studies, arts and technology.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM UNIQUE? While all preschools provide intellectual and social experiences, the Y Preschool also focuses on a student’s overall health and well-being. Students receive gymnastics and fitness instruction each month as a part of their curriculum. They are also able to take fitness, swimming and gymnastics classes in conjunction with their education—all of which are offered around their class time for parent convenience. A daily emphasis is put on teaching and giving students the tools to make healthy choices in their lives.

YMCA early childhood staff know that effective and positive programming for young children is possible when strong relationships between families and staff are developed. Our program is State Licensed with certified instructors. A YMCA membership is not required to enroll your child in the Y Preschool Program.

OUR SWIM LESSON PHILOSOPHY The Y Aquatics Program is participant centered. The emphasis is on learning, not passing or failing. Each level is divided into 5 components which include personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games and rescue. It is not uncommon for a child to repeat a level.

Our swimming lessons are specifically tailored to the child’s age, ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. The participant will advance as they become more skilled in the water.

FLOATATION DEVICES: We believe in the use of bubbles to help children gradually become accustomed to the water. Every lesson, we remove the bubbles at least once to test your child’s buoyancy and build confidence.

REPEAT A CLASS: Every child learns at a different pace. Some children may remain in one level for a longer period of time. Once they develop into the requirements of the class, they will program to the next level.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to class ratios and to keep classes at a consistent level, we cannot offer make-up swim lessons. If your child has a long illness or injury and cannot continue through a session, you can apply for a credit; a doctor’s note is required. We do not give credits for individual classes missed regardless of the reason.
