Electric gas discharge lamps convert electrical energy into lightby transforming electrical energy into the kinetic energy bymoving electrons, which becomes radiation by collision process.

Major drawback of gas discharge lamp:

They require an auxiliary apparatus called a ballast to run withthem because gas discharge lamps have negative incrementalimpedance.

An electrical ballast is a device intended to limit theamount of current in an electric circuit and provides highignition voltage.

A ballast serves two functions:1. Provide the starting kick.2. Limit the current to the proper value

Ballasts stabilize the current through an electrical load.Used when an electrical device presents a negative

    (differential) resistance to the supply.

Ballast provides a positive resistance or reactance thatlimits the ultimate current to an appropriate level.

Magnetic ballast:core and coil electromagnetic ballast.Operate lamps at line frequencyLeast expensive first cost option

Hybrid ballast:Use a magnetic core and coil transformer and an electronic switch forthe electrode heating circuit.Operate florescent lamps at line frequency.Cost more than magnetic ballast but less than electronic ballast.

Electronic ballast:Uses electronic components that operate lamps at 20-60 khz. Have half the power loss of magnetic ballast.Lamp efficacy increases when lamp operates above 20khz.Higher in first cost but reduce wattage by approximately 10-15 wattQuieter, lighter, and virtually eliminate lamp flicker.

    E-CORE

    Has an E shaped

    core. Used as anInductor.

    TOROID

It is a three winding transformer.

Core is in the shape of toroid . All the magnetic flux is contained in the corematerial

as it has no ends from which flux mightleak off.
