HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE

Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club Members,

We often hear the term “Corinthian” in relation to the behavior of members of the yachting community. This term is derived from the philosophy of amateur competition espoused by the Corinthian football club of 19th century England. The club promoted the amateurism of the team and emphasized fairness and respect and strict adherence to the rules of the game. In this regard it was noble to play for the sake of playing and to assure that the team strove to win not for a prize, but for winning fairly.

The yachting community embraces this philosophy of amateur competition in its competitive events. Sailors compete by sailing their own boats, not by hiring a professional crew and watching from the sidelines. New sailors are mentored to become skilled sailors by fellow crew and skippers. During competition, competitors are expected to take their penalty turns without being told to. They follow the Racing Rules of Sailing. Competitors conduct themselves without berating or bullying others. To win while violating the spirit of Corinthian competition is a loss.

For us at the Hawaii Yacht Club, the Corinthian spirit directs our conduct during all of our activities. There is a tremendous emphasis on treating our fellow members with fairness and respect. We conduct ourselves without berating or bullying others. We mentor each other in skills that are necessary to maintain a yacht club. We respect the voluntary effort of each other and recognize those efforts are undertaken without expectation of a reward or prize. When we make mistakes, we recognize them and take the appropriate corrective action. Lastly, by embodying the Corinthian spirit, we model the behavior of fairness and respect to all we come into contact with outside of the yachting community.

To belong to a yacht club is to embrace the Corinthian spirit. This is the spirit of the Hawaii Yacht Club.

Aloha,

Richard DentonCommodoreHawaii Yacht Club

VICE COMMODORE

Aloha HYC members and well wishers,

I am still recovering from a painful eye surgery episode, hence the short message.

I am excited about finally launching reserved parking for diners, which I negotiated with DLNR and Diamond parking to begin on the second Friday in June. We will start with five reserved stalls for those with dinner reservations, and then expand this number to ten after a trial period. As an introductory promotion, parking will be at the reduced rate of $2.50 (50 cents an hour) between 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., to be paid at the galley. This rate is only valid during those hours and requires a $20 minimum. Parties of four and above will be given preference, and parking will be on a first come, first served basis. This means that early birds will get the reserved stalls – just think about no more going around in circles looking for parking! Call the galley for your reservations and they will fill you in.

I am happy to report that our Internet provider, Sun Global, has teamed up with one of Japan’s premier Internet service providers - NTTBP – and that will give us broader coverage and better bandwidth in Hawaii in the coming months. I was privileged to attend a meeting between Sun Global and NTTBP, where all the state officials were in attendance, including the governor and the mayor of Honolulu, whom I had the honor to meet. Needless to say, I extended an invitation to the mayor to visit the Hawaii Yacht Club, which he graciously accepted, subject to his busy schedule; I hope to have him over at the club as soon as possible.

I am also delighted to report that many members and visitors are very happy with our new galley. I hope our members will support them at every opportunity possible. Go D’lish!

Till next time …

MARKETING

Aloha Members,

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the folks who have been helping me recently. Commodore Rick Denton has started his own ‘Commodore’s Chart Table’ to keep the members updated on sailing events, learning opportunities and more. He is doing a great job and I am so happy to have the help with sending out eblasts to all of you and more. Thank you to Carolyn Majewski who handles some of the website updates and so much more! You are a great mentor!

I also want to thank everyone who has been supporting me in the events I have been trying to get off the ground. Joanne Weldon and Craig Wicke have been a great support to me by helping with the shopping and preparing of pupus for all the members to enjoy as well as set up and clean up. I want to thank the many members who participate in these events. You all know who you are and there is way too many to list individually. I do love my HYC Ohana!

I am taking a much-needed vacation to the mainland and the bulletin that is coming out for June will be handled by several others. At the time that I am writing this, the June bulletin is just starting to be formatted and I am confident that it will be fantastic.

I am always looking for opportunities to improve my role as Marketing Chair. I am very invested in Hawaii Yacht Club and I actively investigate ways in which we can work as a team. I would like to take this moment to bring our attention to an awareness of wellness, acceptance, gratitude, charity and fellowship.

As individuals, our concerns are valued and as a club we should share these concerns with solutions. The focus of our club is fellowship with respect, and accountability is everyone’s responsibility. I just wanted to state my gratitude for everyone’s participation.

Let’s make Hawaii Yacht Club the best it can be! See you at the club!

Aloha,

Jen Long HYC Marketing Chair

HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN

We had two regattas in May: the Slim Lambert Youth Invitational on May 5 and the Laser Dis-tricts on May 12. We had six Toppers in the morning race of the Slim Lambert Youth Invitational. In the afternoon, we had Akira Kumagai in Laser B and Charlie Wilson, Lily Wilson, Jaizen Boots, Kawai Soares and Laura Rogers in El Toros. We had a total of 26 Lasers in the Laser Districts, an event consisting of seven races, with winds of 5 to 18 knots.

Our summer program is coming up soon! We will have novice classes Mon-day through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and racing in the afternoons from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. You can apply on our website: www.hawaiiyachtclub.org/boat-ing/junior-sailing. Our instructor staff, comprising of Cole Oxe, Ryan Murray and Colby Curtis, are looking forward to the summer season.

We recently received a donation of an Islander 36 sailboat, which we are selling to raise funds for the sailing program. It is an older boat, with a working diesel and a nice interior. If you are interested in buying it, let me know!

Aloha Cruisers,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! Summer is upon us with many happy cruising days ahead of us.

Our guest presenter for the month of May was Jeff Naus. Jeff, his wife Patty and three crew members went on a whale watching cruise over to Molokai and Maui in February 2018, aboard their 55 foot Tiana, Moonshadow III. We had an intimate group, so we all gathered around Jeff’s computer and were delighted with incredible photos of whales breaching out of the ocean and dolphins frolicking near McKenna Beach on Maui. Many thanks, Jeff, for your presentation and for the great tips of avoiding the ferry side of Lahaina Harbor. Our next Potluck & Presentation is on Tuesday, June 5, downstairs at the HYC, at 6:30 p.m. Please bring a dish to share and sit back and enjoy another exciting evening with fellow cruisers sharing their adventures with us.

We had a great turnout for our Sunday Brunch on May 20. The Galley by the Sea breakfasts are fabulous, and the conversations are always stimulating. Stay tuned for our next brunch date.

Next month I hope to have some exciting tales to tell about cruising to Pokai Bay. We have at least three vessels participating for Memorial Day Weekend, weather permitting of course.

Until then, take care, be happy, and stay safe!

SAILING

Aloha Fellow members,

HYC did not host any Hawaii Yacht Racing Association races in May. Our next HYRA race is the Mesick on July 14 and 15. In addition to our weekly Friday night Beer Can Race, we now have another opportunity to race at HYC! The Craft Brew Race is held at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month on our Craft Brew Tasting night.

The Craft Brew Race is open to all sailors. It is a pursuit style short race starting on a PHRF adjusted time. Please contact me on 808-351-7482 between 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on race day to get your start time. The starting line is the same as Friday night. Please let me know if you want to volunteer to be the mark boat.

Come out and race with us and enjoy craft beer at the club afterwards!

Sincerely,

Ron Uryga RC Sail

Exciting things are happening at Galley by the Sea, friends!

This month we introduced our Happy Hour Pupu Menu! We have cut price pupus and snacks available in the bar Fridays and Saturdays from 5-6 p.m., so come on down and enjoy some drinks, tasty bites and the sunset with friends!

We have also introduced our new monthly theme nights on Saturdays. Once a month on Saturday night, we will be creating a special menu featuring food from a specific region or country and matching the music or entertainment to the menu. We started out with Soul Food Saturday and JMAC performed. Anyone who came will tell you what a blast it was.  If you have specific ideas for theme nights, let us know!

We are also very excited to announce that our wedding pages are now live on the HYC website (www.hawaiiyachtclub.org/weddings-events/gallery) and we are expecting to get some real interest in special events and weddings at the club. This is an excellent way to attract new members and to bring in much needed revenue to the club.

Please be sure to like our Facebook page so you can see what special events and fun nights we have coming up each month.
