As you read this, students will be testing in Reading and Writing on March 15, 16 and 17. Science is coming in April. We’ll be on a late start schedule on all testing days. If you have any questions about the testing process please don’t hesitate to contact us here at school. We are well into the Registration process for classes next year. Students have completed the selection of their classes for the coming school year and turned those forms into Counseling. Our next step will be to determine the number of sections of classes we’ll offer and then schedule students into those classes based on their courses selections. This process of creating the master schedule takes several weeks to complete. We anticipate having schedules available for students to view in early August. In the meantime, if you have questions about registration or questions about specific classes for next year, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor. Spring sports are underway and we are already into the seasons for Baseball, Fastpitch, Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Tennis, Track and Golf. Best of luck to our student-athletes and coaches. I wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to our PTSA, Sports Booster Club, Grid Iron Club, and Music Boosters. When I came to MTHS 7 years ago, we had Music Boosters and several smaller parent groups all working really hard to support students and programs without much coordination. In the past three years, through the hard work and dedication of parents who are very committed to our school, we now have much more focused groups all working to support our students, teacher, and coaches. We are so fortunate to have parents who are willing to do this work and be a part of our school community. If you have any interest in being a part of any of these groups, more information can be found on our school website. I encourage you to check it out and get involved. Congratulations to our Jazz 1 Band for qualifying for Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition. This is a tremendous honor for our student-musicians and our Band Director, Darin Faul. The competition takes place in May and our group will travel to New York City to compete against some of the finest jazz programs in the country. We are very proud of this accomplishment and wish Jazz 1 the best of luck. Drama recently finished the musical, “Quilters”. It was an amazing production and showcase of the acting, singing, and dancing talents of our students. Next up for our Drama Department is “Back to the 80’s…The Totally Awesome Musical”. As always I very much appreciate our school community and the amazing support shown by our families. MTHS is a great school and it is great because of students, teachers, and families who are a part of it. Thank you so much and have a great spring.

Counselor alpha is changing slightly for next year, and will be as follows:

A-E Colleen Egger ([email protected]) 5657

F-K Tanya Ummel ([email protected]) 5665

L-Re Julie Petterson ([email protected]) 5658

Rf-Z Pam Salvatore ([email protected]) 5659

Our counseling office telephone number is 425 431 7787. We welcome questions during our office hours of 7:00am to 2:30pm.

If your student has encountered difficulty in his/her classes, there is help available. Several resources we recommend to get over these rough spots are:

1. Tutorial with teachers in their rooms from 7:20-7:40 am daily.

2. Sno-Isle Library real-time online tutors (www.sno-isle.org), in English and Spanish.

3. Study Hawks – Every day from 2:00-3:00 in the school library, supervised by Sue VanSenus.

Registration for next year started in March. For the most up to date information, be sure to check out our MTHS Registration webpage: http://edmonds.wednet.edu/mths/registration. Through Advisories, students completed the following:

March 2- 9 Students obtained teacher signature for classes that require teacher permission. Students should have gotten parent permission for some classes.

March 9 Completed registration forms were due to advisors with all required signatures. Late forms are turned in to the counseling center. Students must choose 4 alternate classes. Students who fail to turn in a course registration or to list alternates will be scheduled for required classes and assigned to appropriate electives on a a space available basis and will not be able to change them.

The next step is to work with the administration to build a master schedule for next year. Based on the number of students requesting each course, we will determine what classes will be offered and how many periods of the day the demand requires. If too few students request a certain course, that particular course will not run. When we run the master schedule the computer builds student schedules based on their requests.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation requirement reports are available through Skyward Family Access.

• Seniors must have 19 credits after first semester to be on track for graduation;

• Juniors must have 13 credits,

• Sophomores should have at least 7.5 credits,

• Freshmen 2.5 credits.

If your student is behind in credits, it is important to meet with his/her counselor and develop a plan of action. If summer courses were taken outside of the Edmonds School District, it is your responsibility to see that we have a transcript indicating credits earned.

2010-2011 RUNNING START INFORMATION Running Start allows juniors and seniors to take college-level courses for both high school and college credit. Running Start classes may be taken at any of the community colleges, but our students primarily take classes at Edmonds Community College because of its proximity to MTHS. The Edmonds School District pays for the college-level course tuition. Students are responsible for the application fee, quarterly and course fees which are approximately $125 per quarter, and textbooks which run approximately $150 per quarter. Registration for the 2011-2012 Fall quarter at EdCC will begin March 14, 2011. Students must make an appointment with their counselor to begin the Running Start application process to allow enough time for adequate advising.

College anyone? Yes, there is still time to apply to quite a few colleges. Some schools operate on a rolling admissions basis and therefore will accept students until May 1. Also, students and parents requesting financial aid need to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) ASAP. This federally funded student aid program becomes available yearly as of January 1 and funds are given out to those who qualify on a first come, first served need basis. We recommend all students fill it out if they have any intention of attending a two or four year college next year. In these uncertain economic times, furthering one’s education is the best thing to do for the future. Consider post-high school education as an investment in your student’s quality of life.

Graduation Status:

P Will your student be able to earn the necessary 22 credits. Has your student passed the Reading and Writing HSPE?

P Is your student current in completing a High School and Beyond Plan? (completed with registration form.)

P Has her/his Culminating Project Proposal (Senior Project) been approved and determined to be adequate?

P Did he/she pass the Math WASL or an alternate assessment (SAT, ACT, AP), or will the student continue taking and passing math classes? (2.0 additional math credits required after sophomore year if the student has not passed the Math WASL/HSPE.)

Financial Aid Information!!!!

It is time to get your PIN (personal identification number), your documents and fill out the FAFSA! Beware of companies that promise to send college applications or fill out FAFSA forms for a fee – applying for Federal Student Aid is free and is done by completing the official FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need the following information to be able to fill out the form:

- The student’s Social Security number and driver’s license- 2010 W-2 forms and other records of money earned- The student’s and the parent’s 2010 Federal Income Tax Return (or you may estimate and revise later)- 2010 untaxed income records (Veterans Benefits, child support, worker’s compensation)- Current bank statements- Business, investment and mortgage information- Alien registration or permanent resident card (if not a U.S. citizen)

Scholarships-- Be sure to have your student complete the MTHS Scholarship Application. Students must have a completed application and senior resume on file in order for us to consider them for any scholarships or awards that are chosen by our Scholarship Committee.

New Scholarship Resource! Check out www.thewashboard.org for scholarships that are tailored for students in the State of Washington.

The counseling department is giving presentations in Junior US History classes regarding post-high school planning, financial aid planning and taking the ACT/SAT. Ask your student about these presentations to start the conversation about “what to do after high school” if you have not done so already.

HSPE (Formerly WASL): If your junior has not passed a particular portion of the HSPE he/she must take it or pass an alternate assessment (SAT, ACT, AP). See counselor for more information.

Who needs to take an SAT or ACT? If your junior has already taken the HSPE and has not yet passed one or more of the tests, and he/she would like to take an SAT or ACT as an alternate assessment, you may obtain a fee voucher in the Counseling Office for the SAT or ACT fee. Also, these tests are required for university admissions. They are not required for community college admission. We encourage all students who are

interested in entering a four year college or university to take both the SAT and ACT. Colleges will accept the highest score from either test.

TESTING DATES The new state test, formerly known as the WASL and now called the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE), is scheduled by the state to be given on the following dates to all students in the tenth grade as well as eleventh and twelfth graders who need to retest. Please make sure your student is in school, having rested the night before and eaten a good breakfast on the necessary dates below. Studies show that when students sleep well and eat a good meal, they perform better in testing situations. This may mean not having access to the cell phone, computer or game controllers after a certain hour the night before testing.

March 15 & 16, Writing March 17 Reading April 12 Science

Students in Algebra and Geometry will be required to pass the End of Course exams in these subjects—there is no longer a Math HSPE. Tentatively scheduled for June 7 & 8. Check the website for any date changes.

Confused about the HSPE? Check out the OSPI website for answers to many Frequently Asked Questions --- http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/StateTesting/FAQ.aspx

Getting Involved: We encourage our freshmen to get involved in at least one club, sport or activity at school so they will feel a stronger connection with a smaller community here. On the other hand at the high school level parents seem left out of the connection. It does become difficult as your student gets older and wants to be left alone! Parents can get involved, too!!

ATTENTION PARENTS! Do you have a extra MTHS cap and gown hanging in your closet? Would you like to donate it for a worthy cause? The counseling office is collecting them for students who cannot afford to purchase them. Contact Kim Runkel at (425) 431-5663 to arrange your donation.

In the spirit of Read Across America, the Library is producing posters featuring MTH students and the slogan “Read Every Day” (see photo). All students and staff members are welcome to pose with a book they recommend to others and be “posterized”.

The Library continues to add recently published titles to the collection. A combination of grant funds and vendor donations make this possible, even

in these tough budgetary times. Our most recent acquisitions include several non-fiction graphic novels and other non-fiction award winners. Students can check on what’s available by going to the MTHS Library Catalog via the Library page on the MTHS webpage. To see a list of new titles, students simply need to log-in and then select Resources lists/“New Books 2010-11”.

Thanks to those who vote “yes” on Technology Levies, this week ten classrooms will be receiving new laptop carts, each containing 17 laptops. All teachers have received cart management training so that carts can be shared among classrooms. The Library will soon receive two new carts that will be available to classrooms on a check-out basis. These new laptops, in addition to our recently refurbished computer labs, are critical to implementing the new WA Educational Technology Standards. You can be assured that students and teachers will be making active use of the new equipment.

Be sure to check out Sno-Isle Public Library’s Teen Services at http://www.sno-isle.org/?ID=2596 . Upcoming events at the Mountlake Terrace branch offer opportunities for aspiring videographers, poets , and songwriters. Their extensive homework help offerings at http://www.sno-isle.org/?ID=2514 now include “HelpNow”. This service offers live on-line one-on-one tutoring from 1 – 10 p.m. daily.

PTSA SPONSORED

Beginning in April, 26 MTHS students will participate in a program called the Dream Project. Founded in 2008 at the UW Bothell campus, the Dream Project is a student-led course, where college students mentor first generation, low-income high school students in the college planning and application process. The UW Dream Mentors travel in teams to partnering high schools and meet with a selected group of students on a weekly basis from the Spring of their junior year into the Spring of their Senior year. Students are coached on every step of the college application process, including financial aid, scholarships, essays and applications.

About the 2011 HSPEThe 2011 High School Proficiency Exams will measure learning in Reading, Writing and Science.

• All 10th grade students are required to take all four sections.

• Juniors and seniors who have not yet passed Reading and/or Writing, must take the test(s) they have not yet passed.

• Current 9th graders will not be allowed to take the Spring 2011 HSPE.

About the HSPE and Running Start • Edmonds Community College (EdCC) has a policy that if a student informs the instructor that the student must take HSPE on a certain day and time that conflicts with the EdCC class, the instructor will give the student an excused absence. Additionally, if the HSPE conflicts with an exam in the EdCC class, the instructor will provide a make-up exam for the student.

• Running Start students at other community colleges should check the policy at that school.

About the HSPE as a Graduation Requirement All high school students must pass the Reading and Writing HSPE in order to earn a diploma. The Class of 2013 must pass the Math and Science exams as well.

About the New State Math Assessment (EOC)

• The state assessment in math will consist of two end- of-course exams – one for first year Algebra and one for Geometry. For information about Math graduation requirements, please refer to the Edmonds School District website: www.edmonds.wednet.edu/EOC

• For students who do not pass both end-of-course exams, there will continue to be a “core” math state assessment for students to take to demonstrate math proficiency.

About Students Not Passing Previous Tests• The District will be sending letters to all juniors and seniors who have not yet met standard in Reading or Writing, reminding them that they need to take the HSPE in the appropriate subject. Be looking for this mailing!

What is HSPE?

Important Messages about the 2011 High School HSPE and EOC exams

The High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) are a series of tests that help make sure our students learn the foundational skills and knowledge that educators, parents and community leaders say are important to their success in life.

The HSPE serves two purposes. It helps us find out how each student is doing and how each school is doing. Schools pay attention to HSPE results. They use them to improve teaching and to do a better job of meeting every student’s academic needs.

The Education Reform Law passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1993 required the state to create a set of common learning standards for grades K-10. The law also called for a testing system that measured student learning of those standards. Washington fourth-graders started taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in 1997. Students are now tested each spring in grades 3-8 and 10 in reading and math. Students also are tested in writing in grades 4, 7 and 10 and science in grades 5, 8 and 10.

In 2004, the state Legislature set a date for the state to implement the third piece of its education reform efforts: student accountability. Starting with the class of 2008, all students must show they have a certain level of skill in reading, writing and math (and, soon, science) to be eligible to graduate. One of four ways students statewide must do this is by passing the HSPE or a state-approved alternative.) Students must continue taking the HSPE even while attempting alternatives. Passing one of the options available under the Washington Alternate Assessment System (WAAS) is an option for students receiving special education services.

Unlike most standardized tests, which are all multiple choice, the HSPE is a mix of multiple-choice and short-answer. The HSPE is used to meet testing requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. HSPE scores determine whether a school, a district or the state has met Adequate Yearly Progress.

Key Club News: SOS (Save Old Spectacles)The MTHS community collected 115 pairs of prescription eye wear and the

Key Club wants to thank everyone who participated. Our donations, along with donations from Lynnwood HS, and the Lynnwood Kiwanis Club (who supports the Key Clubs) gathered at College Place Optical to clean, repair and box up

a total of 416 pairs of glasses to be donated to Mercy Ships. Physicians will match the eye wear to people in need around the world. We are so pleased and

grateful for all who supported this project. Start saving your glasses for next winter’s collection.

Beginning after Spring Break the Key Club will be collecting toiletries and personal items to be donated to Pathways For Women a homeless and

emergency shelter for women and their children. While you are on vacation, grab those bottles of shampoo and bars of soap. While spring cleaning, gather

up those extra toiletries that are taking up space. Items can be dropped off at school in the office, or to my classroom in 135. Thanks so much!

Music Department News and Events

MTHS musicians have been busy preparing and performing at festivals, competitions, school activities and concerts.

At the WMEA District Solo Ensemble Contest in February, Jack Walters (clarinet) and Jessica Lindsay (oboe) were winners and advance to the State Solo Contest in Ellensburg in April. Lucy Schermer (flute) and Alena Wolfe (soprano) are 1st alternates. Congratulations to all the musicians who competed.

Jazz Ensemble 1 was the second place winner at the Clark College Jazz Festival in January. Both jazz bands also performed well at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in February. Chamber Winds performed at the UW Band Festival and the Central Washington University Wind Ensemble Festival where they had the opportunity to listen to other high school and CWU bands too.

Jazz Ensemble 1 has been selected as one of 15 finalists for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington High School Band Competition and Festival in New York City May 12-14. Jazz Ensemble 1 submitted a recording along with 109 other jazz bands from North America for a blind screening. Roosevelt High School was also selected from this area. Director Faul stated the band had worked hard, and he was excited and grateful to be a finalist. MTHS was also a finalist in 2000, 2002 (honorable mention), 2005 (third place) and 2008. Congratulations!

The MTHS orchestras hosted a successful concert in March with the BTMS orchestras. They also participated in the CWU Orchestra Festival. Director Schillen is still looking for UW Concession volunteers to continue this orchestra fundraiser.

The MTHS Choirs participated in the SE Quad Choir Concert March 8 with a highlight of the evening the performance of three “Power Choirs” of elementary, middle and high school choir members directed by a MTHS choir student. The choirs hope to have a recording session at Bastyr Chapel in April or May.

Dynamics’ members Amanda Steuart, Miranda Trout, Susanna Faherty, Shelby Windom, Kaitlyn Martin, Jessica Weight, and Karin Redden were the cast of Quilters in March which showcased their extraordinary talent. Instrumentalists T.J. Sullivan, Kyle Scherrer, Taylor Griffin, Scott Swanberg, Mariya Zima, Sunny Song and Ryan Woodyard also contributed to this moving musical about pioneer women.

Tickets are now available for Hot Java Cool Jazz which is April 15 at 7:30 pm at the Paramount Theater. Jazz Ensemble 1 will be performing with Roosevelt, Garfield, Newport, and Edmonds-Woodway jazz bands in an amazing evening of jazz. Proceeds benefit the jazz band programs. Adult tickets ($18 and $11 students/seniors) purchased from MTHS Music Boosters or the Cedar Plaza Starbucks will be counted for MTHS in the contest to see which high school sells the most tickets. The winner will be announced at the concert and receive an additional $2000.

MTHS Music Boosters and musicians continue to fundraise for travel and other music expenses. The annual sale of beautiful, hanging flower baskets continues until April 1 with pick-up on Saturday, May 7 in time for Mothers’ Day. Order from MTHS music students or contact Music Booster President Joan Lundquist at 425-778-5663 or [email protected]. Candy will also be sold as a fundraiser with more details later. Also mark your calendar for May 7 when the band program will have a concert, swing dance, dessert and possible raffle to raise money for band. This event will also be a send-off for Jazz Ensemble 1 for Essentially Ellington. Continue to go to www.mthsbands.org and watch for a new Music Boosters Newsletter which will be emailed to homes for updates and information.

Grad Night Party InformationThe number one cause of death for our seniors is automobile accidents. They are more likely to be involved in a fatal accident on graduation night than at any other time in their lives. (Information was taken from Grad Nights, Essential Party Guide). 6 great reasons why your graduate should attend their Grad Night Party

• Historically, graduation night claims the lives of more 18-year-olds than any other night.

• The seniors are together to celebrate, perhaps for the last time as a group, before going their separate ways.

• They are supervised all night.

• There will be no opportunity for them to use drugs or alcohol, so they never have to bow to peer pressure or make dangerous decisions. Ultimately, they will realize that it is possible to celebrate without alcohol or drugs.

• You will have peace of mind knowing where your kids are, and that they are having a great time on this special night.

• Throughout their lives, your graduates will look back on this party as a very special night to remember.

To find out all you need to know about tickets, fundraising etc., check out the Grad Night Party website: http://2011.mountlaketerrace.gradnights.com/. Please make checks payable to MTHS PTSA. To keep the price of tickets as low as possible, the senior parents are doing many fundraising events.
