The team is currently ranked 7th in the CIS top ten and has been in the rank- ings for five consecutive weeks. The team has received great lead- ership from newly appointed captain Matt Grennier, a native of Dryden, ON and former Kitchener Ranger (OHL). The fourth year business student has 14 points in 16 games played and has played an instrumental part on the teams special teams. Assistant captains include fourth year defenseman and former Barrie Colt (OHL) Riley Moher, and third year centreman Nick Vergeer. The pivot from West Lorne, ON currently has five goals and 14 assists. Also wear- ing an ‘A’ this year is fourth year economics major Adam Wood who was injured the first half but is expected to play in the new year. Key fourth year players include: Blueliner Rob Dmytruk, a Scarborough native who has eight power play goals; gritty right winger James Edgar, a key component on the teams PK; and Winnipeg native and former Prince Albert Raider (WHL) Chris Di Ubaldo. The former St Thomas Star has eight goals and 15 assists in 16 games. Fellow second year Matt Maccarone is close behind with 21 points. Maccarone, the 6’7” Whitby native is playing with his brother, D-man Adam Maccarone who joined the team this year after playing with the Oshawa Legionnaires (OPJHL). Other second years include: Ryan Courtney, the former Sabres draft pick found his stride early in the first half with a hat trick against Waterloo; Luke Girard, a 6’4” forward from Mississauga, ON; Chace Nusca, a Toronto native; and our goaltending trio of Jeff MacDougald, Sarnia (OHL); Mike Thomson, Collingwood (OPJHL), and Aaron Forer, Melfort Mustangs (MJHL). Blueliners include: Former Fort McMurray Oil Baron (AJHL) Tyler Grover from Consort, Alberta; Jordan Fair one of our two local players who partners with Grover on the blueline; Sarnia native Randy Frew; and smooth skating first year Chad Kennedy, a recruit from the Aurora Tigers (OPJHL). Rookie forwards include: lead- ing goal getter Nathan Peacock, the former (Western Jr B) scor- ing champ netted nine goals in 16 games, speedster Jeff Borrows from London, ON; 6’5” Westerner Mike Leclair a former Olds Grizzily of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Jayme Helmer, (Trenton Sting, OPJHL); John Thiel who played locally for the Waterloo Siskins; and Luke Dubbin, (Sudbury Wolves, OHL) who becomes eli- gible to play in the second half. The team will prepare for the second half of the season by attending the TBayTel Varsity Cup in Thunder Bay, ON play- ing a round robin tournament against Toronto, Calgary, and host Lakehead. The regular season continues on the 4th of January with eight of the 12 remaining games against divi- sional opponents. With two national championships and thirteen provincial crowns between them, Laurier Football and Men’s Hockey have long tradi-tions of success. Laurier alumni from both sports are committed to keeping this “champi-ons” mentality with our current teams as they compete at the highest level nationally.

However, to stay competitive in the new era of athletic scholarships in Ontario, significant financial resources must be secured to recruit the top student-athletes to attend Laurier. As a result, the alumni bodies of both sports are jointly launching the Laurier Champions Golf Challenge.

As an overnight event, the Laurier Champions Golf Challenge is unique to the charity golf scene. The event provides a first-class golf-ing getaway for guests in Muskoka at Delta Grandview, including:

• Lunch and dinner and auction on tourna-ment day and breakfast the following day

• Top-notch resort rooms and suites with ac-cess to all resort amenities • Additional golf at other exclusive area resorts on the following day

Date: Thursday June 28- Friday June 29, 2007

location: The Mark O’Meara Course, Delta Grandview Resort, Muskoka, Ontario.

Cost: $2,500/foursome; plus various corporate sponsorship opportunities and 2nd day golf at

exclusive area courses available at additional cost

Proceeds: To be split equally between football and men’s hockey and to be used to provide student-athlete scholarships in both sports.

Coach’s Corner with Kelly NobesDear Golden Hawk Alumni and Friends,

On behalf of the current team and coaching staff I’d like to thank you for your contin-ued support. Many of you have been very welcoming to me personally and my first six months on the job have been very posi-tive. There is clearly a very strong hockey tradition here at Laurier and we plan on

continuing that tradition.

The team has had a great start to the season in the win-loss column and has developed a strong team identity. We are striving to be a

hard-working, disciplined team that plays well defensively and is quick to transition the puck. We are looking forward to the

second half of the season and expect success when the playoffs start in February.

There are many ways you can support the current Hawks and help the pro-gram achieve excellence, including; donations, attend-ing games, and volunteering

time serving on the executive to name a few.

All the best for the Holiday Season and hope to see you in the New Year.

Kelly Nobes

#33 Forward Mark Voakes, St.Thomas Stars (WOHL) of St. Thomas, Ontario.

It takes more than determination and talent to build championship-winning teams. It takes the support of family, friends and hometown fans. This past Octo-ber, Laurier Athletics and Annual Giving announced the launch of their new peer-to-peer electronic solicitation system for Laurier’s already successful Adopt-A-Hawk program. This system, only the second of its kind in Canada, makes it quicker and easier for student-athletes to get information about the program to their families and communities.

For just $300 a year you can provide the team with the necessary enhancements to compete for the national championship. The tax-deductible gift supports in-creased coaching and recruiting resources, top quality equipment and exhibition road trip opportunities.

“We believe that this new tool will have a dramatic impact on each team’s ability to help fund those things that are above and beyond their annual operat-ing budget,” said Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of athletics and recreation. “This is what separates the Laurier Golden Hawks from other universities’ athlet-ics programs.” Funds raised through the Adopt-A-Hawk program support out-of-province exhibition play, additional training and coaching resources, and enhanced equipment and facilities.

“In addition to helping the Golden Hawks stay com-petitive at the highest level in interuniversity sport, the program allows donors to support their favourite

team and honour a specific athlete or athletes,” said Baxter.

The new peer-to-peer system takes the Adopt-A-Hawk program to new heights by enabling our athletes to send requests for support via email to their family, friends, community business leaders and other contacts. A personal message from a player gives his or her “fans” a link to the athlete’s personal Adopt-A-Hawk page. The page provides a player photo, a detailed sport biography and current perfor-mance statistics, as well as links to awards received and articles written about the athlete. And, with the push of a button, viewers can send a donation to sup-port that athlete’s team.

Chris Di Ubaldo is one player who’s taking full advantage of the new system to generate support for Laurier athletics. “In 25 minutes, I sent out 10 emails to my family, friends and neighbours back home in Winnipeg.” A forward on the men’s hockey team and a former member of the soccer team, Chris says the system is quick and easy to use ÿ and he doesn’t have to pay for long distance calls, an important consider-ation for a student. “I think you are going to see more athletes using it,” he said.

The Adopt-A-Hawk program can also be accessed through the Laurier Athletics website or at www.wlu.ca/adoptahawk, where Laurier sports fans can search for an athlete by name or sport.
