Slide 4 Lake Chatuge was built during World War II to help the government generate more electricity. Slide 5 Lake Chatuge was built by Tennessee Valley Authority or the TVA. The TVA was created while Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president. Slide 6 Construction on Lake Chatuge began on July 17, 1941. The jobs boosted the local economy in the lingering post- depression years. 3,700 acres of land in Clay County, NC were gone forever. The acres lost were some of the areas richest and best farmland. 141 houses had to be moved. About 60 families left the area all together. Churches or schools were interrupted and moved. The dam helped supply electric power to all the surrounding areas. Slide 8 Today Lake Chatuge is enjoyed by many people!
