BEST-SELLING PROGRAM
The Twelve Step Facilitation Outpatient Program by Joseph Nowinski, Ph.D. The only evidence-based Twelve Step facilitation (TSF) outpatient program available, this brief, structured, and manual-driven approach assists in early recovery from substance use disorders by facilitating active involvement in a Twelve Step fellowship. Based on the behavioral, spiritual, and cognitive principles of the Twelve Steps, this 12-session program uses techniques and protocols from Project MATCH, a nationwide study that concluded that TSF is as eective as motivational enhancement therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of substance use disorders. Follow-up studies show that TSF has the best long-term outcomes of the models tested.

can meet the needs of varied residential or outpatient settings by reducing or increasing
the number of weeks. Single-family sessions orient a family to a loved one’s specific psy-
chiatric disorder. Multiple-family sessions run in a rotating twelve-week cycle, allowing
families to join at any point. Topics of discussion for the multiple-family sessions include
medication, communication, stress, coping with symptoms, and others. Reproducible

The Integrating Combined Therapies curriculum brings together the evidence-based

approach plus a transition phase—clinicians are shown how to guide patients through the
aspects of these therapies. To help empower patients and ensure flexibility in treatment,
there are “treatment decision points” between the phases, allowing patients and clinicians
to decide how best to proceed. To help deliver key information to patients, reproducible
handouts and fact sheets are found on the accompanying CD-ROM.
