In April, Scott Heinig, Administrator from the Village of Holmen, provided us with an update on all
the exciting growth in our area. The Village of Holmen is moving into the future with significant
infrastructure and facility upgrades that will take our community into the next thirty years. These
improvements include investments that have already been made, such as the new Police Station and
new park shelters and equipment to better serve the needs of the community.
New investments over the next few years will include a new Village Library; the construction of a
new sewer facility intended to serve our growing community up to a population of 15,000; and a
massive investment in highway infrastructure, beautifying Holmen Drive and Main Street to promote
economic development and create a true “sense of place,” – making Holmen the premier location to
both live and do business in western Wisconsin.
These investments are already proving themselves positive, as 6 new subdivisions are being planned
and developed, totaling over 1,000 new single-family homes over the next 10 to 15
years. Additionally, significant commercial development is being planned along the Holmen Drive
corridor that will enhance Holmen’s retail trade area, as Holmen begins to now compete with
Onalaska for major development projects.
It is unquestionably an exciting time for the Holmen community, and especially for the businesses of
Holmen, as our community continues to progress and evolve into the future!

COMMON EYE DISEASES IN THE ELDERLY
Our eyes are something so important to us, we can’t even begin to understand how much we use them. There is so much input that we rely on to keep us safe, to enjoy the world around us, and to identify things around us. As we age we become more susceptible to having issues with our eyes and it can become a major issue. Dr. Kristen Reierson from Gundersen Health System Vision Services will be our special guest in May to discuss common eye diseases that affect the elderly and how this impacts their life overall. Dr. Reierson will also share from a caregivers perspective, what to look for and how to identify eye issues. Please plan on joining us for Dr. Reierson’s presentation.

Representatives from the Holmen Area Community Center building campaign will present a
fundraising approach to the Holmen Business Association at the Association’s July 14th meeting.
Several area businesses have recently offered promotions to help fund the Community Center.
These welcome initiatives led to conversations about how other businesses might participate in
one or more special initiative. While participation by individual businesses (and their customers)
would be voluntary in any case, a coordinated approach could be most productive and efficient
for businesses and their patrons. Here are a few examples for your consideration prior to the
discussion on July 14:
Add 1% to the sales ticket – customer would authorize adding 1% to their purchase, a function
typically completed at a register or by other electronic means at the time of purchase.
Customer chooses to add $1 to $5 – this a common promotion offered by retailers. Customers
would be asked: “Would you like to add a dollar as a contribution to the Community Center?”
During the holiday season, Salvation Army utilizes small slips marked in either $1 or $5
denominations, rung up and thus added to the purchase. The business would then transfer a
cumulative amount to community center building fund.
Counter-top container for “loose change” – small, attractive clear plastic containers could be
produced for placement near the register to encourage donations.
One-time or annual business contribution – in the event that these (above) or other options
prove impractical for certain businesses and/or professional offices, a direct business
contribution may prove to be the most productive way to participate.
Those who have been working on the Holmen Area Community Center are anxious to hear from
area business leaders. Please welcome this opportunity for input on July 14. Your cooperation
and good counsel are essential as we work together to create attractive, accessible facilities for
our rapidly-growing hometown region.
