“This is a beautiful space for our patients to receive their treatment and care; it doesn’t feel like a hospital and we are aiming to provide a faster service so that patients can begin treatment as quickly as possible when this is appropriate.”

The outpatient unit is a joint project between HCA Hospitals and UCH and means private patients can choose to have their care and treatment within one of London’s newest and most advanced cancer centres. The centre is equipped with a revolutionary Pet MRI scanner–thefirstofitskindinthecountry–afullrangeofdiagnosticfacilitiesandaMacmillan Support and Information Centre for patients and relatives. It is inspired by the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the US and ‘designed around the needs of the patient’.
Locatedonthefifthfloor,HarleyStreetatUniversityCollegeHospitalisspaciousandbrightand surrounds the special Squire Gardens where private patients can relax during treatment.
Sarah Fisher, CEO of NHS Ventures said, “The advantages of this new centre are that patients have the best of both worlds: access to the very latest cancer treatments ‘as they happen’ within an environment of seamless patient care and high quality service.”

CANCER CARE
CANCER CARE
Issue 4April 2012
HCA is committed to ensuring our cancer services are of the highest possible quality and to monitoring the outcomes of the cancer care we provide. Our hospital facilities contribute to the UK cancer registries and national clinical audits, key parts of the National Cancer Data Repository hosted by the National Cancer Intelligence Network.
External accreditation of services requires the collection of comprehensive clinical datasets, demonstrating adherence to guidelines such as those issued by the European Reference Organisation for Quality Assured Breast Screening and Diagnostic Services.
The breast cancer specialists we work with agree our quality standards and HCA is proud to exceed European standards in four key areas:
• 100% of cases identified through imaging are correctly excised in the first surgical biopsy [standard ≥ 95%]• 88.6% of patients with pT1 cancers undergo breast conserving surgery [standard ≥ 80%]• In 96.6% of cases hormone receptor status is available to inform treatment choices [standard: ≥ 95%]• In 99.6% of cases histopathology grading is available to inform discussions about treatment and survival [standard ≥ 95%]
Our pre-operative diagnosis rate for breast cancer is 94.5% (NHS standard >90%).4

The Lister Fertility Clinic is the largest purely private clinic in the UK, undertaking 2,500 IVF cycles per year. The Lister Fertility Clinic achieves above average live birth rates for under 40s.
(Right) Live births per embryo transferred in the year ending 2nd quarter 2010This shows the likelihood of each embryo transferred resulting in a live birth. It takes into account how many embryos were transferred in a cycle. It presents how many women had a live birth out of the total number of embryos transferred across all cycles. The success rates appear lower than for live birth per cycle started because clinics often transfer two embryos per cycle.

“All I can say is ‘wow’. My expectations were not only met, but totally exceeded, from the quality of care to the food, from the newly refurbished room to the friendliness of the staff. My husband and I were truly and utterly privileged to have Christella as our midwife and as a second- time mum I cannot get my head around one truth – I actually enjoyed my labour, thanks to the experience. I left The Portland after an incredible 48 hours feeling happy, spoilt and most importantly relaxed and ready to enjoy my new little daughter. A ‘thank you’ to the midwives, nurses and the entire Portland team will never be enough.”

Are you or your employees affected by
Bupa Open Referral?Recently we’ve been receiving a lot of enquiries from patients asking for help to navigate Bupa’s new open referral system.
how hca can helpHCA has opened a new helpline number +44 (0)20 7759 3755. Patients who would like assistance in dealing with Bupa can access HCA representatives who are able to book appointments and contact Bupa on the patient’s behalf to secure pre-authorisation.
Bupa Open Referral is a different way of making referrals where a patient’s GP is required to make an unnamed referral. This new procedure differs from previously whereby thepatientisreferredtoaspecificconsultantbytheirGP;a process more favoured by GPs in general. When the patient calls Bupa to pre-authorise treatment, they are given a choice of three or four consultants suggested by Bupa. The patient must then select a consultant from the list and arrange treatment. HCA believe this change to the referral process is causing anxiety for some Bupa customers and is eroding patient choice.

“I am pleased to share with you HCA’s latest Quality Outcomes which summarise our achievements against a wide range of national and international benchmarks for hospital quality and safety. This year I am delighted to note that our HCA cancer centres have exceeded European standards for breast cancer in four key areas. Our rehabilitation unit at The Wellington Hospital has achieved the highest international quality accreditation – the first time a private unit has been awarded this; and the Lister Fertility Clinic is out-performing the national average for live birth rates in women under 40 years.”

REHABILITATION
REHABILITATION
Issue 4April 2012
At The Wellington Hospital Acute Neurological Rehabilitation Unit we believe it is important to measure the outcome following rehabilitation. We measure outcome in various ways: the Northwick Park Dependency Scale, the Modified Barthel Index and goal achievement and discharge destination.
Goal achievement is based on whether the patient has achieved goals set on admission to the unit. These goals are set in conjunction with the rehabilitation team and the patient, together with their family.

Why we publish OURFirst-ClAss QUAlitY oUtCoMes
HCA was the first private hospital group to publish our quality outcomes in 2005 and since then we have reviewed them annually. We measure many aspects of our hospitals, from cleanliness and infection rates through to cardiac surgery survival and cancer treatment waiting times.
It gives our patients peace of mind that they are choosing consultants and hospitals that outperform our peers in many areas of care
It helps Gps to choose our hospitals and consultants to refer private patients
It demonstrates to our consultants that we are committed to matching their medical expertise with world-class facilities
It sets a standard for private healthcare that we believe is unparalleled anywhere else
It provides us with a constant measure of our hospitals’ performance so that we can make investments and improvements that will make a tangible difference to the care our patients receive

cardiologists at london Bridge hospital have been awarded ‘Best Medical Practice’at the 2011 Laing & Buisson private healthcare awards for a ground-breaking new combined procedure to identify patients who are at risk of developing life-threatening blood clots during or after coronary stenting or heart surgery. The procedure links platelet function and a rapid ‘point of care’ genetic test to detect at-risk patients who can then be offered more effective and fast-acting treatments.
london Bridge hospital is one of hca’s three main cardiac centres and is the largest private critical care unit in the South east, including kent and east and west Sussex. For further information please visit

First-class cardiac survival rates compared with other UK and European centres.

Issue 4April 2012
HCA is the largest provider of cardiac surgery in the independent sector in the UK with patient numbers similar to many NHS units.1 Our three main cardiac units are at The Harley Street Clinic, London Bridge Hospital and The Wellington Hospital and we are still the only private hospital group to provide our cardiac data to the national Central Cardiac Audit Database (CCAD) which monitors the performance of cardiac centres throughout the NHS.
HCA has an increasingly complex case mix of high risk patients, yet our very pleasing survival outcomes continue to improve year on year. When benchmarked against national and international survival rates, HCA cardiac surgery units demonstrate first-class, risk-adjusted results.
The table on the right shows risk-adjusted cardiac surgery survival rates across all three HCA cardiac surgery units.
Risk-adjusted cardiac surgery rates across all three HCA Cardiac Surgery Units.
Our hospitals collect cardiac data in the following areas:1
• Adult Cardiac Surgery • Adult Cardiac Interventions• Congenital Heart Disease• Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)• Cardiac Rhythm Management
Our Cardiac Units were granted Centre of Excellence status in 2009 for their services.2
