Founded in 1907, Basingstoke Golf Club was set up by Charles Lloyd, the club’s first professional, originally as a nine-hole course.

From these humble beginnings the club thrived until the Great War when it was taken over and used as a training airfield. Whilst this land was never used again as a playable golf course, the club members continued to meet and play other clubs under the name of Basingstoke Golf Club until finally, in 1926, they started to look for a new site to build a course.

Kempshott Park was the chosen land and James Braid, a member of the world-renowned trio of golfers known as the Great Triumvirate, was commissioned to design and construct the course. After receiving favourable reports from Mr Braid, the 106 acres of land was purchased and worked commenced.

A renowned golf course architect, Braid applied his design skills to provide an interesting and challenging golf course, which is formed on soil ranging from gravel to clay over chalk. Over the years the course has been modernised in keeping with modern practices and remains excellently maintained by our thorough green keepers.

Opened in 1998 by former Ryder Cup Captain, John Jacobs, our beautiful and modern clubhouse features innovative wall technology that allows us to change the size of the rooms so they complement each function perfectly.

For many years, the club has had a well-deserved reputation for the friendliness of its members and that tradition is as strong today as it ever was.

Basingstoke Golf Club is a mature tree-lined parkland course in rolling countryside that has matured well over the years into one of the finest courses in the region.

The course measures 6,307 yards, with a par of 70, and is typical of a James Braid design with undulating fair-ways, subtle contoured greens and strategic bunkering.

Playing host to many county amateur and professional events, the course and greens in particular are regarded as some of the finest in the south.

The signature hole is the par four 14th, which calls for two accurate shots to reach the green in regulation and marks the end of a five-hole stretch which we call our own “Amen Corner”!

It has a reputation for being a fun course to play for all standards of golfers off the forward tees and so lends itself well as a golf day venue, while it can also be stretched out to a tougher test off the back tees.

But don’t just take our word for it. Search the internet for reviews of our course from unbiased yet demanding golfers and you will find – consistently – that we come highly recommended from the people that matter.

ABOUT THE COURSE

11www.basingstokegolfclub.co.uk

Hole 5, 175 yards, par 3The second par 3, another strong hole. Playing uphill, one club more may be required. If the pin is tucked away to the left, make sure you take enough club to clear the cavernous greenside bunker.

Hole 6, 378 yards, par 4Another risk reward drive. The safe option is another 220-yard tee shot to a wide inviting area to leave a mid iron to the green. The brave will take a driver and thread it through a narrow landing area to leave a short pitch and a birdie opportunity.

Hole 7, 419 yards, par 4Another challenging long par 4 from the competi-tion tee. A drive down the left is ideal to avoid being blocked out by trees to leave a mid to long iron shot to the green. From the yellow tees the hole is significantly shorter and offers a good birdie opportunity.

Hole 8, 245 yards, par 4A characteristic of all James Braid courses – the driveable and tempting risk and reward par 4. The ideal shot is a soft draw off the trees providing a backdrop to the green. The green is heavily protected by bunkers and errant shots will make par a difficult score. A good drive, though, sets up a definite birdie opportunity.

Hole 9, 331 yards, par 4A soft fade from the tee will leave a pitch into the green and another birdie opportunity. Longer hitters may reach a strategic bunker 60 yards short of the green and the smart play is to lay up short. The fairway cambers from right to left and this may make the stance awkward for the approach to the green.

If you have never played at Basingstoke Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1, 499 yards, par 5An “easy” opening hole to break players in gently. Although downhill, the hole plays into the prevailing wind. The tee shot needs to avoid the two strategically placed bunkers on driving length; ideally it needs to be left of centre of the fairway to avoid being blocked out by a large tree on the dogleg at 150 yards. Longer hitters will be able to go for the green in two, whilst shorter hitters are advised to lay up short of the cross bunker to leave a pitch into a long green.

Hole 2, 364 yards, par 4An uphill par 4 that plays longer than the yardage, offering the opportunity for a risk reward drive. The safe play is a 220-yard tee shot to the dogleg, leaving a mid iron to the green. A brave drive into a tight landing area offers a pitch to the green and a genuine birdie opportunity.

Hole 3, 160 yards, par 3A tough short par 3 with the green protected all round by bunkers. This hole requires an accurate mid iron shot as par is always difficult if the green is missed.

Hole 4, 466 yards, par 4The first of Basingstoke’s tough, long par 4s. A drive needs to be threaded past the fairway bunker and trees. A brave tight line to the trees will reduce the length of your second to the green. A downhill approach offers the opportunity to run in your shot to the green. For shorter hitters a lay up may be required short of the big cross-bunkers at 80 yards to leave a pitch on to the green.

COURSE TOUR continued

Hole 15, 368 yards, par 4The only blind tee shot on the course. A driver leaves a short pitch to the green, but be aware that it will be from a downhill lie. A fairway metal or long iron to the marker post will leave a flat lie but longer approach. An inviting green sits below offering a good birdie chance if in position from the tee.

Hole 16, 362 yards, par 4A sharp dogleg requires the tee shot to be both long enough and on the right half of the fairway to avoid being blocked out by trees. Long hitters will run out of fairway with a driver unless they turn the ball over considerably from right to left. A mid to short iron approach shot to a sunken green awaits the well- positioned drive.

Hole 17, 162 yards, par 3The final par 3 on the course, again a strong hole. The yardage alters dramatically according to the pin position as the green is 40 yards long. A front pin requires accuracy with a short to mid iron as two bunkers await, whilst a back pin stretches the hole to over 170 yards. Playing slightly uphill, one more club is often the best policy.

Hole 18, 491 yards, par 5The second par 5 to finish the round. Avoid all the bunkers and a birdie opportunity awaits. Longer hitters will need to feed their drive right of the bunkers, shorter will not reach. The green awaits the big hitter in two but the entranceway is very narrow. Shorter hitters will lay up by the next set of bunkers to leave a pitch into the green.

Hole 10, 414 yards, par 4The start of Basingstoke’s “Amen Corner”, you now face five tough holes and start with a long uphill par 4, that plays all its distance. A good drive will set up a mid iron to a heavily protected green. Once again this shot plays a little longer than the yardage so take enough club.

Hole 11, 427 yards, par 4Another strong par 4. Long hitters need to aim right of the fairway bunker to leave a mid iron downhill approach to the green. Shorter hitters will not reach the bunker and be left with a long approach to the green.

Hole 12, 205 yards, par 3A great long par 3. What you see is what you get. A long iron or fairway metal will be required to reach this heavily-bunkered green.

Hole 13, 411 yards, par 4The fairway bunker is in play for longer hitters so the smart play may be a fairway metal to leave a mid to long iron shot to the green. A successful long drive offers a birdie opportunity but the landing area is very small. Once again, take enough club as the second shot plays longer than the yardage.

Hole 14, 430 yards, par 4The final hole in this tough run – and the hardest of the five. A tee shot needs to be threaded through the fairway bunkers that make the landing area very tight. Longer hitters will clear the first trap, but then the second waits. The second shot needs precision to an elevated green. Anything short will run off back down the steep slope to leave an awkward chip. An extra club is advisable to avoid this happening.

Our membership is incredibly broad in terms of age, golfing experience, cultural background and occupation. Whether you are male, female, young or old, new to golf, or a scratch player, everyone is welcome as a member.

Our membership year commences from the 1st April annually, although members can join at any time upon paying the appropriate subscription.

We understand that young adults do not necessarily have the financial resources to commit to the cost of a full membership and, therefore, we offer an intermediate membership option. Members at Basingstoke enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

One of the big attractions to new and established members are the ‘Roll up’ games we host on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while our non-competition weekends are also available for members to come along and enjoy a friendly day of golf.

There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at Basingstoke and you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities.

TUITION

24 www.basingstokegolfclub.co.uk.co.uk

25www.basingstokegolfclub.co.uk

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because the clubs they are using are not entirely suited to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to complement each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.

We stock the Taylor Made custom fitting cart featuring 18 iron heads with 17 different shafts. Likewise it has 12 Taylor Made driver heads with 17 different driver shafts. This is state-of-the-art in golf technology and with so many different combinations we can’t fail to find one that suits your game.

Customising the club to the golfer will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which more often will lead to the correct impact position and result in better scores.

Basingstoke is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable them to become as proficient at this great game as their talent and application allows.

The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a putting green that mirrors the fine surface to be found out on the course.

A chipping area and practice bunker are also available for golfers looking to perfect those round-saving up-and-downs and sand saves. For those who find time is at a premium, there are two practice nets that afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

The highlight of our practice facilities, though, is our covered driving range. At over 250 yards long, it gives even the longest hitters a chance to open their shoulders, from either the grass tees or from the three covered bays.

Each bay has a quality artificial surface and varying tee heights which, together with quality practice balls, spacious bays, ample parking and welcoming staff make Basingstoke Driving Range the best in the area.

Whether it’s a quick coffee before a round, a refresh-ing drink at the bar, or a more substantial meal in the restaurant, our accommodating staff provide first class customer service that will make your visit to Basingstoke Golf Club a memorable one.

If you wish to book our facilities or would like to talk to a member of staff about the options available to you, then please contact our Assistant Managing Secretary, Karen Tull, on 01256 465990.

The friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the clubhouse provides a comfortable setting in which to unwind after play and to enjoy a refreshing drink and, perhaps, a bite to eat.

The current clubhouse was opened in 1998 by former Ryder Cup Captain, John Jacobs. Built on one level, it allows for easy access for all and provides a wonderful vista of the course from the patio.

A lovely spot to spend some time on a sunny day, it will come as no surprise to learn that outdoor activities besides golf are a popular feature in the summer months.

Our clubhouse is perfectly suited as a venue for any event, be it a wedding, birthday party, conference, christening or wake. Innovative sliding wall technology gives flexibility, allowing us to provide up to four separate areas or the option to open up the whole clubhouse where up to 200 people can be accommodated.

The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers and lagers, wines and spirits and a choice of soft drinks.

Basingstoke is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1907. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

One of the ways in which we do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and abilities. Our season starts in May with our mixed Kempshott Cup, a 36-hole tournament, with the juniors getting their chance in the Baker Cup later the same month.

August is a busy month with a number of Open events being hosted in the first week of this month. The Senior Men’s Open kicks off the week followed by the Mixed Pairs on Wednesday; Thursday is the Junior Open with the Men’s Pairs Invitational Open closing the week on Friday.

In September we continue our Open theme by hosting our Ladies Open and the Seniors Better Ball Open.

You will find details of our upcoming events and club conditions on our website, www.basingstokegolfclub.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

OPEN COMPETITIONS

Traditional joiners, manufacturers of quality windows and doors, box sash windows, skirtings and architraves, architectural mouldings, bi-folding external doors and double glazing.

Our splendid course should be reason enough to become part of Basingstoke but there is the additional attraction of an active social scene too. The members are renowned for their friendliness and if not trying to break par, like nothing better than to spend an evening in each other’s company.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

One of the undoubted highlights of the year is the Captain’s Dinner Dance, a black tie event where we toast the Captain in his year and welcome members and guest to this special evening.

On alternate years Members celebrate Burns Night or the Chinese New Year in the surrounds of the club-house, while New Year’s Eve is always a very special time of year at the Club and is celebrated with a special party theme before hitting the dance floor to welcome in the new year.

There are many equally enjoyable but less formal occasions, many of which feature get-togethers in the clubhouse after an enjoyable round on the course.

Bridge nights are a popular way for members to wile away a long winter evening, while other events include quiz nights, casino nights and Bank Holiday competitions.

Live bands and singers always prove to be very popular, as do our fireworks nights, while barbeques and themed nights are always well attended.
