QUALIFICATIONGUIDEAccess coursesAccess programmes are established nationally as an alternative to A level entry to degree and diploma programmes. They provide entry to a degree or diploma with no previous qualifi cations and provide grounding in the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully progress to a higher education course. We off er various ‘pathways’ that allow entry onto specifi c degree courses.

HNC (Higher National Certifi cate)An HNC is ideal for anyone who wants an introduction to their chosen subject. Most students who choose to study for an HNC do so part time over two years while they continue to work. A HNC can be a stepping stone to a HND and from there to a full Bachelors Degree.

HND (Higher National Diploma)HNDs are available in a wide range of subjects – mainly vocational. HNC/HNDs are well known by employers so this will increase your employability. Entry requirements are generally lower than those needed for degrees. A full time HND will probably take 2 years but longer if it includes an industrial placement. There is the option to top-up to a full degree with further study, either at Lincoln College or other local universities.

Professional qualifi cationsThe college off ers several qualifi cations accredited by professional organisations, such as the ILM and AAT. These qualifi cations are designed with the needs of the profession in mind, and are often the only route into a given profession.

Study Options for HNC/DThe HNC and HND qualifi cations are delivered fl exibly to suit your particular needs. You can achieve a HNC or HND in the following waysHNC – full time in one year or part time in two years - HND – full time in two years or part time in three years

Page 17: HE Course Guide Sep12 - Visit Lincoln · Studying Higher Education is a sound investment in your future. The opportunities we off er at Lincoln College provide clear progression

Foundation Degrees (FdSc & FdA)These two year degree courses are a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional three year undergraduate courses. They combine the level of learning off ered by a degree programme, with practical, commercial experience. Foundation degrees are particularly popular with employers for a number of reasons: they enhance the knowledge and skills of existing employees; increase productivity and competitiveness; change the skill set of existing employees; develop employees within the business and train new employees to learn their job quicker.

Foundation degrees normally take two years if studied full time and are a valuable qualifi cation in their own right. They can also be a stepping stone to undergraduate degrees and other studies. Foundation Degrees are awarded in Art (FdA) or Science (FdSc).

DegreesThe title of undergraduate degrees varies depending on the subject studied, from a BA (Bachelor of Arts) to a BSc (Bachelor of Science). Following completion of a fi rst degree, some people progress to a postgraduate degree, either taught for example, an MA (Master of Arts) or a research programme, often called a doctorate, and awarded with a PhD or Doctor of Philosophy.

Emma recently completed the two year FdSc in Health and Active Lifestyles and remains confi dent with her choice to study Higher Education at Lincoln College: “I wanted a course that would provide the opportunity to gain work experience and help me develop employment skills, whilst putting into practice what I learnt in the classroom, which is exactly what the FdSc in Health and Active Lifestyles provided. I was accepted onto similar programmes at four Universities - choosing to study in Lincoln had many advantages for me. Financially, the costs were reduced as the tuition fees were lower and being able to stay at home meant the cost of living was cheaper. The tutors were very supportive and I loved that the classes were small – I think that played a huge part in being able to stay on top of all the work!” Emma is now employed by the YMCA in Lincoln.
