It was as follows: Verse nine of the text says: “Love should be shown without pretending.” From week to week, I have observed this unique kind of love here. And we have displayed a love that doesn’t pretend in various ways over the last year. More recently, we have had a Lay Academy Sunday, blessing of the backpacks, a recognition of Sunday school teachers, and we gave Bibles out to our children and youth. I believe we show love without pretending, naturally. It is as verse 10 says: “Love each other like the members of your family.” Yes, many of you are related to two, three, eight families here, but I’ve got to say that the love here is real, because we do love one another as members of our family. We are truly happy with those who are happy, and cry with those who cry. We also help our family here by volunteering as a way of showing that we are here for each other. That’s what being family is all about! The task is for us to continue to be, as verse 11 says, “on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord” and “contribute to the needs of God’s people.” In addition to our volunteers, we continue to showcase this through our mission moments, where ministries of Saint Stephens have been and ministries and chances for mission in our community are being recognized. As December and Advent approach, Saint Stephens will have another opportunity to contribute to the needs of God’s people through the Advent Giving Calendar . ... But I am not going to say any more than that to add suspense and wonder. The scripture for today ends with a charge, and it’s a charge for us as we look toward our next year together, our next years together. They say, “consider everyone as equal” and “live at peace with all people.” It may seem an impossible charge, but we are already doing it! Take the pews for example. The half pews were moved intentionally to make the sanctuary more accessible to people in wheelchairs, and the back row on the lectern side has been spaced to make room for walkers and canes to fit. All of this was done to consider everyone as equal. I wonder what we will be able to say next year in response to “consider everyone as equal” and “live at peace with all people.” My friends, I will end by saying that my dream for Saint Stephens is that we will love everyone with mutual affection and let our love be genuine. Not to particular people or groups, but to everyone, because that, that is who WE are as Saint Stephens United Church of Christ. The scripture says, “welcome October 22, 2019 (Continued on page 2)

It’s Who We Are

This past Sunday my report for the Annual Meeting was a mix between a report and a message using Romans 12:9-18.

Because many of you weren’t able to hear the message, as it wasn’t broadcast on the radio, and because I feel it’s important to hear it again, I have decided to provide my report/message to you as this week’s article. It was as follows:Verse nine of the text says: “Love should be shown without pretending.” From week to week, I have observed this unique kind of love here. strangers into your home.” And that means standing by our mottos: “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you’re welcome here” and “Be kind, for everyone is going through something you know nothing about.” I mean, do we have these and say them because we like the sound of the phrase or because we actually genuinely mean it?My point is that the love we give and surround people with, as Saint Stephens, is a love extended to all, even those who identify differently than us, or who may act or behave differently than us, and who are strangers. Yes, we will be met with struggles and suffering, but my hope is that we be patient in the struggles and suffering, and we persevere together. And I imagine that we do all these things and everything else I mentioned that we do as Saint Stephens, because it is what we believe it means to serve the Lord.May we continue to be on fire in the spirit as we serve God.

LAUSITZ BRASS CONCERTThe German church (Evangelical Church of Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Upper Lusatia, whom the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC has had a partnership with since 1981) has fronted the money for tickets for the Lausitz Brass group from Germany to come to America.

They are touring our Conference and will be performing in Concert here at Saint Stephens. Free will donations (cash only) will be accepted. The goal is for the group’s performances to recoup the money for transportation so they can pay it back to the German church. The total cost to transport the group to the U.S. was $6,000.

Lausitz Brass is comprised of nine performers from Germany: Steffen Peschel (leader), Katja Meyer, Sebastian von Eitzen, Anna-Sophia Koehn, Christoph Hartmann, Johannes Soldan, Albert Sturz, Leonie Steuer, and Julia Haase. They are hoping to experience real life in the U.S. and some of our varied culture here, in addition to sharing their music with us.

We are planning to take them out to the Sawmill Brewing Company after the concert. Plan to join us!

GREEN TEAM OBSERVATIONS Recently we have seen heavy flooding in areas around Tokyo, Japan, and a enormous tornado in Dallas, Texas. Have we reached the point where we can say climate change is reaching extreme levels?

According to a Washington Post report, (see link below) certain portions of the United States have already reached temperatures above the limit for extreme weather. And one of these regions (northern Minnesota Boundary Waters) is not far from us here in Merrill. Scroll through the article to find the map of temperatures. The Green Team doesn’t have an answer about what this means for us as a society, but it’s probably not a good sign, and it is something we should all be aware of.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/national/climate-environment/climate-change-america/

GREEN TEAM MEETINGOur next Green Team meeting is Tuesday, October 29, at 6:30 PM in the Kuck Lounge.

GREEN TEAM NOTES ...As the Green Team moves into its second year, we are especially motivated by our Love for our children to tackle the challenge of climate change. We are starting to work more closely now with the Wisconsin UCC Creation Care Team and look forward to bringing new opportunities for everyone to participate. This year will be the 50th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22) which was christened by Wisconsin’s own Gaylord Nelson.

Commemorating Earth Day, we plan to participate in a statewide book read/study sponsored by the UCC Creation Care Team. There will be several book choices, including one already identified that’s entitled Because We’re All Forever EarthBound by Chuck Tennessen and illustrated by Wisconsin children from elementary through high school. Mr. Tennessen is working with the Creation Care Team, and a portion of the cost of this book will be covered by the UCC and a Church Member in southwestern Wisconsin.

As we enter this second year, Saint Stephen’s Green Team again welcomes your feedback, and we’ll close this note with something for all of us to ponder from the poet Melville: “We cannot only live for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow man: And along those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and THEY COME BACK TO US as effects.”

NEIGHBORS IN NEEDThe Neighbors in Need offering, which we will receive on October 27, 2019, supports the UCC’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Through ucc.org/justice, our national Justice and Witness Ministries office offers resources, news updates, and action alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC’s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban,multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S.

PEW ARRANGEMENTSPerhaps you’ve noticed we’ve moved some pews! They have been spaced apart to better accommodate walkers, particularly in the far back pews, and we’ve also opened up spaces nearer the middle of the church to be more handicap accessible, so our guests in wheelchairs don’t feel they’ve been relegated to the back. They like to see what’s happening at weddings and communion, too! Those who use walkers should feel more comfortable now in any seat they choose. And in case of emergency, wheelchair users should be able to more easily navigate out of the spaces opened up in the middle, as well. It’s a win-win.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Please, Please, Please

Jesus told them a parable: “In that city there was a widow who kept coming to [the unjust judge] and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’ For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’” - Luke 18:3-5 (NRSV)

The people came to Jesus to ask why their prayers for justice hadn’t been answered. He told them this parable: To get what you want, annoy God until she caves. Wear her down until she gives you what you want just to shut you up.

This is my nine-year-old’s primary strategy for achieving his goals, so I feel for God and the judge in this scenario. But it’s hard to know what to think about the possibility that God experiences our earnest prayers and regular worship as annoying. For so long, we’ve been telling ourselves that prayers rise to God like incense, unfurl before her like banners caught high in the morning breeze.

What if instead it’s all been just one centuries-long “PleeeEEEeeeEEEeeeaaase”? What if all this time God’s been muttering through clenched teeth, “Oh my Self, I

wish they would just shut up”?

On the other hand, it’s kind of nice to think we might have that kind of influence on God, that there is in fact a thing that will finally move the Unmoved Mover. Little kids whine because it’s often the only leverage they have; maybe the prayers of us insignificant humans work the same way on the Almighty.

Maybe our prayers are annoying to God; maybe they’re not. But let’s keep praying, everybody. I think she’s going to crack any time now.

Prayer

Please…please…please…please? Please? PLEASE? PLEASE? Pleeeeeeeaaaase? Amen.
