2/07/2013 Issue 21 He makes me lie down in green pastures. Psalm 23:2 It is not only people who find it hard to go to bed hungry; a sheep is also restless when it has not had enough to eat. A sheep lies down only when it is full. In Palestine, with its bare hills covered with little soil, the shepherd's task was not easy; it was a real problem for many shepherds to find green pastures to feed the sheep. How happy the shepherd was when the sheep would lie down on the ground and were satisfied! Our Shepherd is good, for he makes it possible for us to 'lie down in green pastures', to be content because all of our needs have been met. Our basic needs have not been met when only these questions have been answered: What will I eat? What will I drink? What will I wear? Where will I live? What will I do? Are my children ok? Do I have enough after I retire? These questions are important, but they are only second in significance to our inner, spiritual needs and hunger. Sin brings a hunger for peace and forgiveness. Sin brings separation from God, and people who are separated from God are restless. To bring them inner peace, the Good Shepherd laid down his life for the sheep. So that people might not remain separated from God, Jesus closed the gap with his cross. He was forsaken by God to make amends for the many times that we, like sheep, have gone astray. When we look to Jesus, believing in what he has done and is doing for us, the restlessness of life ends in perfect peace. When God is the strength of our heart and our portion forever, we can say with peacefulness: 'In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety'. Gracious Lord, help us to find our rest in you. Amen. (adapted by Pastor Richard Fox from the LCA devotion book, “Healing & Hope” – a service provided by Lutheran Media Ministries) As we near the end of our term, I shared the above devotion thought as I know many of us look forward to the change of routine and the opportunity to rest. Let’s not forget the rest that only God can provide. We wish God’s blessings and rest to Mrs Kotzikas and Miss Schultz as they enjoy Long Service Leave during Term Three. This week we have welcomed Mrs Hall (Reception S) and Mrs Were (2K) to our school as they prepare to teach with us next term. Thank you As we close our term on Friday, I wish to especially thank - Our incredible staff who continue to selflessly commit their time, skill and expertise for the benefit of our students. - Our parents who serve on our School Council and Parents and Friends committees for their passion and many hours of time given. - Our outstanding volunteers who so unobtrusively help out in and around our classrooms with activities like reading, art, electives, pedal prix and excursions to name a few. - Our Class Carers and Janene who quietly support many families with practical support in times of trouble. - Our students, who are the reason we are all here, who give us great joy as we see them growing and developing into wonderful young people. Mid- Year Reports After many hours of careful and thoughtful preparation by staff, students will bring home their mid-year written reports tomorrow. The reports are written as a summary of your child’s progress and achievement. They are not a pass or fail assessment but rather describe the skills, knowledge and processes your child has been working on this semester and the areas for future learning. If you have questions relating to your child’s report, please make an appointment to see your child’s teacher rather than just dropping in. This will allow a focused quality conversation to occur in an appropriate setting. Cont’d o’leaf …. 37 Hampden Road, Mt Barker SA 5251 T 8391 0444 E [email protected] W www.stmarks.sa.edu.au

Sounds on Sunday What a delightful way it was to spend a Sunday afternoon listening to our students perform and sing, showcasing their musical skills. I wish to thank and acknowledge Mrs Steffan who creates and supports so many opportunities for our students along with our instrumental teachers and band leaders. Of course our biggest thanks are for all our talented students who performed beautifully. Term Three We will begin Term Three with students on Tuesday 23rd July. You are welcome to join us for opening whole school Chapel on this day beginning soon after the 8:50 am bell. Please note there will not be Chapel on Friday 26th July. On Monday 22nd July, staff will be involved in professional learning focusing on how we use our inquiry framework in teaching Australian Curriculum Science units. I look forward to Term Three and the fresh opportunities we will have to build community while we provide quality learning for our students. James H Principal Cornerstone College Recently, families who have their children enrolled at Cornerstone for Year 7 in 2014 or 2015 should have received a letter from Cornerstone College Principal, Craig Fielke. He has requested that an outline of the letter be shared with all families in LEAH primary schools. Cornerstone College Council recognises and has reflected on the change in circumstances the introduction of Year 7 at Cornerstone will have on families. The Council has and will continue to consider how to best support and partner with families in their choice of a Lutheran Education in the Adelaide Hills. I am pleased to be able to share with you the positive outcomes of the most recent Cornerstone College Council deliberations. These changes will form part of the budget and schedule of fees for 2014, to be adopted by the College Association at the General Meeting later this year. Year 7 Tuition Fee This fee will now be calculated at 50% of the Year 8–12 tuition fee. The Council is committed to seeking means to maintain the Year 7 tuition fee at 50% of the full tuition fee into the future. While there may be some slight variation as part of the budgeting process, this equates to the following tuition fees. Confirmation of the exact tuition fee will be communicated once the 2014 budget has been finalised. Year 7, 2014 $3,798 Year 7, 2015 $4,083 Building Fund The building fund contribution will continue to be $500 per child, with a maximum contribution rate of $1000 per family per year. Multiple Child Discount Extending last year’s adjustments, changed Multiple Child Tuition Fee discount rates from 2014 will be:

3rd child 25% (from 15%) 4th and subsequent child 100% (from 20%) Families with a child currently in Year 4 will be provided with indicative tuition and fee structures at information sessions early in 2014. Cornerstone’s current fee structure can be accessed via the Cornerstone College website: http://www.cornerstone.sa.edu.au If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College Registrar, Helen Charles on 08 8398 6009.

Please also keep the Pope family in your prayers as they mourn the loss of Darren’s mum (Fran) who passed away unexpectedly last week. Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this sad time. Woolworths Earn and Learn The last day to drop in the Earn and Learn stickers is Friday 5th July. The School cannot accept any stickers after this date - thank you. Music News SALAKA AFRICAN BEAT was a huge success! The students were swept away by the rhythms of the African instruments and the natural musical talents of the musicians who ran the concert. There were wristbands for sale at $3.50, but as we weren’t aware they would be available, students may now order one from the front office. If you want to purchase a wristband, please bring $3.50 in correct cash (no change given) by Friday week 10, 5th July in a named plastic bag or envelope and wristbands will be delivered to your class on Monday Term 3 week 1. If your child or your family is interested in purchasing African instruments as used in the concert, you are welcome to visit the website and purchase from there. It is www.africanbeat.com.au and you will find percussion instruments from only a few dollars.

Students in the subsidised band program will need to return their instruments as soon as possible if they are not continuing with lessons next term. If you are a new enrolment in the band program, please return the hire agreement form by the end of the week. Instruments will available for students in week 1 and you will hear from your new music tutor as to lesson arrangements before students return to school in Term 1.

Net Set Go 2013 This year 23 girls enrolled to join the Net Set Go Program that was held at St Marks during Term 2. 23 girls came out most weeks to learn the various skills needed to play netball. There is a lot of talent coming through and I hope the girls will come out for another season of Net Set Go or move on to play in the Under 9 teams. A big thank you to all the parents who were needed to help run the sessions by working with a small group of children. Without your help the sessions would not have run so smoothly and the girls would not have been kept as ‘hands on’. Net Set Go balls – size 4 Mt Barker Lutheran Netball Club has received a number of new size 4 balls (the size used for net set go and Under 9’s ). The club will be selling them as a fundraiser for $5 each. They would make great presents!! Contact me if you would like to buy one or two.
