He Whakatauki
Tangata takahi manuwhiri he marae pūehu
Ko te manaaki manuwhiri tētehi o ngā tino kaupapa o te ao Māori. Mehemea ka tae mai ētehi manuwhiri ki tō marae ki tō whare rānei kia kaha tō tiaki i a ia kei kore ia e hoki mai. Koia te āhua o te marae pūehu, arā, nā te kore tangata takahi i tō marae kua tau te pūehu. Nō reira kia kaha tatou ki te manaaki i ō tātou manuwhiri ahakoa ko wai, me he Kīngi, me he tangata ware kua kore he rerekētanga. He manuwhiri rātou, me tiaki ā tinana, ā wairua hoki kia tino tau tō rātou noho ki waenga i tō marae, whare rānei. Me whāngai tō manuwhiri ahakoa he inu wai Māori noa iho ko te mea nui kua hoatu ki te manuwhiri. Mehemea he kai anō āu me hoatu ki to manuwhiri, e kore rawa tēnei manaakitanga, te kore manaaki rānei e wareware i a ia.
Looking after visitors is a very important custom in the Maori world. If a visitor arrives at your marae or whare take very good care of them or they may not return. That is what ‘marae puehu’ is. Because no visitors have come to the marae the dust has settled. So, take very good care of our visitors whoever they are, whether it’s the King or just anybody, there is no difference. They are visitors so look after them physically and spiritually so they feel comfortable in your marae or whare. Feed them even if it is just a drink of water, but if you have food, give it to them for they will never forget how well, or how bad you looked after them. They may not come back to your marae.

He Whakatauki
Nō reira ko te mahi a tēnei rākau he noho rōpu, he noho piripiri e tata ana tētehi ki tētehi atu kātahi ka whiriwhiria ā rātou pakiaka i waenga i a rātou anō, arā, mā rātou anō rātou e tautoko kia kore rātou e hinga noa. Mehemea e tū ana ia me tana kotahi kua māma noa tana hinganga ki raro. Heoi anō mehemea e tū tahi ana ngā tāngata i te pā, e tautoko ana tētehi i tētehi, e awhina ana rātou i a rātou anō, kātahi anō ka kitea te kaha o te pā. Mā te mahi tahi e tū kaha ai ia, e kore rawa e hinga noa iho.
The Kahika is one of the tallest trees in the forest, his problem is that he has shallow roots. Whenever a strong wind comes through he just gets blown over. Because of his shallow roots he can’t hold on to the ground so he just falls over. So this tree lives in a group and they stick together and what they do is intertwine each other’s roots between them so they can support one another, this way they can stand strong in the forest without getting blown over. It is the same with the man in the pa. If he stands alone he will probably get blown over. So they have to support one another, help one another and co-operate with one another so they can stand strong.
