MESSAGE FROM REV. SUE

Some years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do

you say after you say hello?” It wasn’t a book about how to have better conversations

as much as it was an invitation to realize that we have unconscious beliefs about life

and ourselves which influence how we act and how we talk with others. Every so often

it’s good for our souls to step back and reflect on what assumptions we are living with

and how they impact our behaviour and the choices we make. The church, in its

wisdom, has given us the season of Lent to help us with this.

From the beginning, Lent was seen as an opportunity to go deeper. To make our faith

matter. In the early centuries it was six weeks of preparation for baptism at Easter.

Later, it became a time of fasting and penitence. Nowadays, it can be a time when we

give something up (such as food or a particular habit or behaviour) in order to realize

our dependence on and need for God, or it can be a time when we choose to take on

something new, such a different spiritual practice or a new attitude to help us grow.

I invite you to use the season of Lent to be intentional about deepening your relationship

with God so you can keep growing in your faith. Here are some ideas:

Take a News Fast

Take a break from reading, watching, and listening to the news. If something big

happens, you will likely hear about it. You could go 40 days completely news-free,

check in only on Sundays, or read paper news only for 40 days.

Read a Story about Jesus Every Day

Choose a word or phrase or an image that catches your attention. Ponder how this fits

into your life and how it might be inviting you to act/be.

Go for a walk in God’s beautiful outdoors.

Research by the David Suzuki Foundation show that time spent outdoors increases not

only our mental and physical health but a sense of gratitude. Ask me about “30 minutes

a day for 30 days in May”.

Give a Little Money Away Each Week

Jesus spoke more about money and our tendency to cling to our possessions than

about any other issue. He obviously thought this was important for our spiritual life.

Fast for One Day or One Meal A Week

Do this not to lose weight but so the hunger you feel reminds you of the hunger we have

Page 3: he Voice - Trinity United Church · PDF fileSome years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do you say after you say hello ... you decide to do

The Voice Spring 2017

Trinity United – Elmira, ON 2

for purpose and meaning -- for the Love that is at the center of the universe.

Write a Thank You Note Each Week to Someone Who Has Touched Your Life

This could be a family member, someone in the congregation or someone from your

past. It helps to cultivate gratitude.

Give up Complaining

This is a habit I took on two years ago for Lent. It’s a great mood-changer. When we

complain about someone to someone else, we create a negative triangle. And nothing

changes. When we complain about the church or church members to our families, we

simply cause them to have negative feelings about the church. When we complain

about the world or the news, we do nothing to create a better world. When you stop

complaining, you will start feeling more positive about other people every day.

Invite someone in your Trinity Family Group to do something with you

Come to Community Can Dine on March 10th, our Movie Night on March 11th, or our

Board Games afternoon on April 9th. Or just go for a coffee together.

Be still

Time spent in contemplation and quiet enables us to be more present to others and to

be able to notice God in our lives and the world around us. This is the daily practice

that I am committing to for Lent this year.

Let me know what you decide to do. I would love to hear about your experience. My

hunch is others would too. Maybe we can share together!

God bless you as seek to grow and to love, learn and live by Christ’s teachings.

Rev. Sue

MESSAGE FROM MARK ROBBINS, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Our church is very blessed by our very own Trinity Band and Trinity Choir as they

continue to faithfully prepare and share their musical contributions to weekly worship.

The fellowship in each group is wonderful and we look forward to both groups

continuing their ministry.

Also a huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Wendy Caya of Glen Allan. Her husband, Pat Caya,

passed away in 2014. Pat was the Music Director of Trinity United Church in 1987.

Wendy has graciously donated Pat's beautiful grand piano to our church.

Wendy has indicated that the piano has been "donated to the Glory of God".

We at Trinity United are so appreciative of this amazing gift and it will indeed be used

joyfully for that purpose.

MESSAGE FROM STACY MOLENGRAAF, BLAST COORDINATOR

This winter the children have blasted into a new program that is bringing them face-to-

face with biblical stories. The children have created

a news team, Bob's Candy News, complete with

news anchors, camera operators, make-up artists

and even a language translating robot. As a news

team they are challenged to research and prepare a

news story, to be presented Easter Sunday, about

Jesus Christ.

Each week they receive a new assignment that

send them through time and space to meet

characters that teach them about Jesus. Through these interactions they reenact the

scripture, learning and experiencing the teachings of Jesus. On one of their first

adventures they went to the Wild Wild West to learn about God’s light around a campfire

with cowgirl Miranda. More recently they landed in pre-

historic times, discovering God's boundless care for us from

two hungry cave women who had faith that God would

provide for them.

Recently the older children (grades 4 and up) have begun to

lead the adventures and act as the

characters the younger children meet.

They meet with the coordinator at the

beginning of Sunday worship to read

the week’s scripture story and decide

how to act it out for the younger

children. They have been doing an

amazing job, and are bringing new energy and excitement to the

program.

MESSAGE FROM JOHN KEARSLEY, YOUTH COORDINATOR

One of the really fun things about Trinity is all the ways there are to find out about

events that are happening that the congregation is a part of. Sunday morning people

are announcing upcoming events, the announcements are on the screen or sent out by

e-mail, and there are corkboards all over the building with posters and flyers. What is

cool for the youth is that not only can they see what is coming up, but in the youth room

there are pictures of events past on the wall as well.

I would love to be able to have a picture of everyone participating in every event, but

sometimes we are all too involved to stop and take a picture. In February we hosted the

youth groups from Melville United Church and Elora United Church and we played “big”

games of Dutch Blitz and Clue. It was so much fun running around the fellowship hall

with giant cards, and wandering the building trying to find out who found Jesus, where

and how, that no one was able to stop and take a picture.

We have also been so engaged in our different worship experiences that we haven’t

been able to take pictures then either. Every Sunday morning we meet and talk about

faith and try and engage in different ways. We might watch a video, play games and

activities, or just talk about how living the way God wants us to means #lovewins. A new

worship experience has also started that we’re calling “coffeehouse style worship” that

is intended to be a more intimate gathering with some low key contemporary worship

music while we are sitting on the couches in the youth room with hot and cold

beverages to drink, snack food to eat, and conversation to be had.

Just because some there are pictures of some activities and not of others does not

mean that any one is more exciting than another. Each is fun in its own right, and I

encourage any youth to check out something that they think looks fun. Some activities

occur regularly such as the youth drop-in time during Community Can Dine, the

coffeehouse style worship, and Sunday morning worship, but there are other events that

pop up that are fun to be a part of too. Whatever the activity might be there are many

ways to hear about it.

MESSAGE FROM DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The Trinity Development Committee (TDC) continues to meet monthly as it gathers

more information for our construction proposal, although it may seem that nothing has

Page 6: he Voice - Trinity United Church · PDF fileSome years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do you say after you say hello ... you decide to do

been happening. Property appraisals which include both the church building and the

Cross Street manse and a pre-consultation with the Township of Woolwich should be

completed this spring. It is hoped that an update will be given to the congregation by

mid-May and a vote on the final proposal could happen before the end of June this year.

Waterloo Presbytery Council has the final approval for any development of church

property. Please remember that there are always delays as firms collect information.

No construction would begin until autumn 2018, should the congregation and

Presbytery approve the final proposal.

We will try to keep you informed as best we can by updating the bulletin board in the

church narthex. If you have questions, please ask.

MESSAGE FROM FELLOWSHIP

Winter will be over by print time! We will have had our Pancake brunch after church on

February 26th. This means that Lent has started and we begin our journey to Easter

Sunday. We are inviting you to join us and participate in a Lenten Friends project. This

involves the Family groups which are included in The Voice. We would like you to

contact at least one person per week from your family group during Lent. We are

suggesting some ideas of how and where you could connect with your ‘Family

Members’. It could be a phone call, meet for coffee, or come to Community Can Dine

on March 10th at the church. This is a pay what you can dinner for everyone in the

community. Other opportunities to meet are Trinity Movie Night being held March 11,

6:30-8:30 pm and Trinity Games Day on Sunday April 9, 1:30 – 3:30 pm. Both events

are for all ages and a great opportunity to spend time with our Church family. If for

some reason you are unable to get out to these types of events you can still drop a note

or card in the mail (or email!). How easy it can be to make a connection!

Oh, and you can always connect Sunday morning at church before, after or between

services!

We would love to hear how you have connected with your Family Members. Your

Fellowship Committee is open to new ideas you may have for getting to know your

fellow church family members, i.e. events or ? Please contact us through the church

office.

MESSAGE FROM WORSHIP

Since our last report to you in November, lots of worshipful things have happened at

Trinity. First of all, before we forget, we want to acknowledge, once again, the ministry

provided to us during November and December 2016 by Rev. Fred Monteith. We heard

many positive comments about the messages he shared each Sunday at both worship

times.

With Rev. Sue Campbell’s arrival on January 1, 2017, we have been encouraged to

become Spiritually Fit (Get Moving, Developing your Faith; Flexing Your Soul Muscles;

Exercising Your Faith; Letting your Light Shine, Sticking to your Goal; Strengthening

Your Core; Stretching Your Faith). We had an opportunity to exercise our faith by

hosting a Prayer Vigil on February 2 in acknowledgement of the victims of the Quebec

City mosque massacre. This event was supported by the Elmira and District Ministerial

Association and was reasonably well-attended considering the short notice.

The season of Lent began with Ash Wednesday, March 1 with a community-wide

worship at St. James Lutheran Church. Each Wednesday evening from March 8 to April

5, the Elmira and District Ministerial Association will be having Lenten worship at the

various churches in our community. Trinity will be hosting worship on Wednesday,

March 29.

This year’s theme for Lent is “I See Jesus.” Each gospel reading for Lent tells us

something that Jesus is doing.

March 5, Lent 1: Jesus is questioning. Communion will be celebrated at both worship

times.

March 12, Lent 2: Jesus is loving.

March 19, Lent 3: Jesus is accepting.

March 26, Lent 4: Jesus is healing.

April 2, Lent 5: Jesus is crying.

April 9, Palm Sunday: Jesus is arriving.

April 13, Maundy Thursday: Jesus is serving. Worship begins at 6:00 pm in the

Fellowship Hall and includes a potluck supper followed by Communion in the sanctuary.

April 14, Good Friday: Jesus is suffering. Worship is at 10:00 am.

April 16, Easter Sunday: Jesus is living. There will be one worship time at 10:00 am

which includes a presentation by the children, flowering of the Cross, special music,

Page 8: he Voice - Trinity United Church · PDF fileSome years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do you say after you say hello ... you decide to do

The Voice Spring 2017

Communion, followed by Coffee/tea and Hot Cross Buns.

A custom at Trinity is to decorate the church on Easter Sunday with potted flowers. This

year, the flowerpots can be taken home by the donors. Trinity is not co-ordinating

delivery of flowers to the nursing homes this year. (Many seniors in the nursing homes

struggle to look after flowers or have allergies to them.) However, our seniors will not

be forgotten. They will receive Easter cards – details about Easter cards and Easter

flowers will be in an upcoming Sunday bulletin.

Worship would be less meaningful if we didn’t have music. Mark Robbins, our Music

Director, has worked faithfully with the Trinity Choir and Trinity Band to bring a variety of

music to each Sunday worship time. By alternating the Sundays on which each group

participates, people who are in both groups can worship without being overworked.

And the music has been GRAND! Thanks to a wonderful donation from Wendy Caya,

we are blessed to have a grand piano in our sanctuary. If you haven’t heard Mark play

this lovely instrument yet, plan to come on Sunday.

Having a more casual, informal, “contemporary” worship at 9:30 am and a more

“traditional” worship time at 11 am does seem to be meeting the needs of our

congregation. Children’s programming led by Stacey is available at both worship times

although most children do attend at the earlier worship. Having coffee time between

10:30-11:00 does offer lots of opportunity to “catch up” as people come and go from

worship.

If you have questions, concerns or comments about worship at Trinity, please share

them with the committee:

Marion Lambert, Janet Morlock, Jamie Groh, John Kearsley, Amy Dunbar, Kristen

Moore, Jessica Rudow, Rev. Sue Campbell, Mark Robbins.

MESSAGE FROM PRESBYTERY

At the January meeting of Waterloo Presbytery, I offered thanks of behalf of Trinity for

Presbytery’s support which we received during our transition time, June to December

2016. Thank you to Rev. Greg Smith-Young who was our Pastoral Charge Supervisor,

Rev. Donna Mann and Rev. Fred Monteith who provided Pulpit Supply, Rev. Anne

Gajerski-Cauley who provided emergency pastoral care several times to our members.

I introduced Rev. Sue Campbell to our Presbyters although she isn’t a stranger to

many. As you may know, Rev. Sue is married to Rev. John Lawson from Three Willows

UC in Guelph, and Sue had been in ministry at a Waterloo church some years ago.

One of the big responsibilities of Presbytery this year is to discuss and vote on various

remits that were issued by General Council42 in Newfoundland in 2015. A workshop

Page 10: he Voice - Trinity United Church · PDF fileSome years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do you say after you say hello ... you decide to do

The Voice Spring 2017

Trinity United – Elmira, ON 9

was held in November, attended by Marion Lambert and me for the purpose of gaining

better understanding of 5 remits for church councils to discuss. These remits deal with

restructuring the governance of the United Church of Canada, membership, one

ministry (ordained vs diaconal vs designated lay ministry), financing a new structure,

etc. At our own Church Council meetings, we have been discussing and voting on

these remits. If you are interested, go to gc42.ca for information.

The 92nd Annual Meeting of Hamilton Conference will be held May 26-28, 2017 in Port

Elgin. I will be attending as our church’s representative.

The next meeting of Waterloo Presbytery will be held at Trinity on March 28, 2017.

Our “Cooks in the Kitchen” will be preparing and serving the meal which precedes the

meeting. If you are curious about what Presbytery work entails, why not consider

stopping by on March 28. Perhaps you might consider becoming a Presbytery

representative with me because Trinity is entitled to 2 reps at each meeting (4 times a

year). It is a great opportunity to visit other churches in our area and to discover what

other congregations are doing to share the Good News.

Rev. Paul Miller is the Waterloo Presbytery Support Minister whose responsibilities

include working with churches in many ways. He capably facilitated our workshop

“Walking Boldly” on January 28 at Trinity to help identify some priorities for Trinity over

the next 3 years. He also writes a Mission Health Vitality Blog sharing thoughts and

insight about healthy churches. His most recent blog “Lessons from Sam the Record

Man” can be found at the link http://waterloopres.blogspot.ca/ I encourage you to read

them and ponder his ideas.

Blessings to all!

MESSAGE FROM LAY PASTORAL CARE TEAM

Trinity Pastoral Care Team has been active over the winter months visiting with our

Church Family members who are not out and about as much as they would like to be.

We assisted Rev. Sue Campbell with the church service she held at Chartwell and

Barnswallow Place in February.

We welcome Christy Humphrey to our team and are pleased to announce that a Lay

Pastoral Care Training will be held in fall 2017. This will be open to anyone in the

community as well as Trinity who would like to learn more about Lay Pastoral Care. We

are hoping you may feel this is your calling and will come to the training. Leave your

ENVISIONING JESUS

During the months of January and February we have been using rocks, pebbles and

shells to demonstrate living out our faith as we have discussed spiritual fitness. The

container we have been trying to fill is quite ambitious and we have had done very well

practicing our faith. As we move into Lent we will be “seeing” Jesus in many ways as he

is doing many things through Lent.

To help us visualize this theme we will be building a collage of pictures on the wall of the

sanctuary of ways we see Jesus doing these things in our everyday lives. I want to

thank Kristin Moore in advance as she has offered her time to find some of these

images for each week. I also want to open this for everyone else to participate in as

well. We will be talking about how “I see Jesus…” questioning, loving, accepting,

healing, crying, arriving, serving, suffering, and living up through Easter. So, I invite and

encourage anyone who sees Jesus doing these things at home or in the community to

take a picture, and send it to the church office with a note of what you are seeing Jesus

doing and we will add it to the collage.

SISTERS UNITED

“It's the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey”

For the past year or so I've felt this longing in my heart to connect with other women in

our congregation. I've had numerous conversations with many different women and the

conversation always goes the same way: “We should go for coffee sometime.” “Yeah

that would be great.” And this, unfortunately, is where it ends. Catch up time after

worship is great, but I have yet to feel that it meets that void I am so desperately looking

Page 12: he Voice - Trinity United Church · PDF fileSome years ago there was a famous book by psychologist Eric Berne called “What do you say after you say hello ... you decide to do

The Voice Spring 2017

Trinity United – Elmira, ON 11

to fill. In conversation, I've learned that many of you feel the same way.

As women, we wear many different hats. We are wives, mothers, friends, career-

women, team mates, sisters, and the list goes on and on. Sometimes all of these hats

can weigh us down and make day to day life difficult. Sometimes we need time away

from these roles to connect with other women to share our stories, empower and inspire

each other, learn together, support each other, share the triumphs and the hardships

going on in our lives, and grow together in faith. This need is how the concept of Sister's

United was born.

Sister's United will be a monthly drop in program on the first Sunday of the month from

12:15pm- 1:45pm. We will meet in the parlour. Reverend Sue will facilitate our time

together and there will be opportunities to share, reflect, and listen. We are hopeful that

the women who attend will leave the sessions feeling supported, cared for, inspired and

reflective on how God is working in their lives.

Please feel free to bring your lunch.

We hope to see you there. For more information please feel free to contact Rev Sue,

Karen Hall or Melissa Hallock.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

There will be a Lenten Bible Study using the book 'Longing for Home' available in hard

copy and e-book.

Start Date March 6 at 7 PM in the Parlour.

Everyone Welcome, contact church office if interested.

IT’S PHOTO TIME!

Okay, I have to admit it … I do not yet know all your names! And while I am trying my

best to get to know you, I know how helpful it will be to have a photo directory where I

can match names to faces. So I invite you to support the building up of our Trinity

community by having your photo taken. You will receive a free 8x10 photo and your

own copy of the photo directory. There is no pressure to purchase anything.

IT’S GAME TIME!

Looking for something fun to do on Sunday, April 9th? “Guess
