You know, though, - and I kn0111T - thot thi s whol e process of adaptation is an unusually s l ow and someJ,jime s pai nful one " and ours ties with the past which s ometime s take t he form of ,9. t ,r and- par ent, a loved one, or a custom still dear to our hearts , - theso ties ar e still close. On the one hand, 3. new or de r be ckons; 0~1 the Jthe r, my blood reminds me that I'm an Indian, and will always be ~ Thi s probl em that fac e s me is not a matte r of ••• e i t her .•• or, r a t he r, i t is one of ••• and ••• and , where I have t o throw away the weeds and keep t he good wheat from each,

And that's what is slow about it all. Itts so much easier to let the weeds grow on .
Nonetheless, ·the future l ooks a little brighter. W'ith a little more education, and a little more rubbing of elbows on equal ground footing with our neighbours , we f 11 know for ' sure that we are uno ( longer vanishing" . Soon, we'll see more teachers , doctors, nurses , superintendants of Indian asencies, secretaries , mechanics, carpenters, etc . -and ·even priests or sisters, whose blood lives will trace right back to the proud race which once roamed supreme in these parts . The raw material f or this is already in our classroom~ of today. And then, not only our school which already does today, but also our whole reserve, with everyone of its people, will show its true colours, ' and compare favorabl y with any other social enviromment in this country. Then also, the Indian will be recognized as a full- fledged citizen of this Canada of ours , for having made his appropriate contribution,to the richness and 'variety of our national heritafSe .
I fm not t elling you my name , because what live said could be coming from any of us . We only hope that you· - whether Indian or other· wise - will help us always to reach the goal ahead of us, through your prayers; your encouragement, and personal effort;, ~Jith that spirit only, will we all help bridge the gaps which sometimes still separate us , so that we will'be aThle to reach ovor in a handshake of understanding and true friendship •

, ' I am still too young to reminisce over the past years • . ,H. w-·· ever, it is wel,l to note that in my short career, · I have seen an evoluti .. n in Indian Education which although hesitant at times , has made increasing pr_gress ,'
Evidently it is neither t he number of pupils that have been crowded into schools built for a handful, nor the millions of dollars that have been spent in Education during post-war years, in comparison with the ridiculous sums spent before 1939 that should impress us . Rather, let us marvel at the genuine and ever increasing awareness on the part of Parents and pupils that education is a "must!! if the Indian people of Canada is to contribute to the full in the development and progress of our modern society.
Anether impertant peint which has ceme to' be recegnized mere ( ) arid mere is, . that the feundatien ef a selid and lasting educatien rests en an upright character plus the meral and ' religieus qualities that yeu may have acquired. That is why, my dear pupils, that yeur teachers censtantly try to' develep within yeu what we call, characterJ which is vitally impertant in yeur life. It is by yeur character as well as by yeur meral and religieus qualities th~t yeu will be judged by yeur friends and by yeur employers.
Character ceuld be better explained as an arr~ ef qualities and virtues, distinguishing ene individual frem anether. The werd "charracter" comes frem the Greek werd meaning a "distinguished mark" and it signifies whaJt tra~ning and nature cembined have given yeu.
Yeu have heard peeple s~ that knowledge is p~wer, or th~t money is power. But character is the real power. Agreat mind without a heart is dangereus. Likewise a great intelligence witheut behavior, er ~leverness witheut goodness is dangerous.
In this day ef easy living, we have to' bring to the fore, m.ral strength ~r backbene, and an ever widening centr~l ever ppysi~al and earthly things.
Seme peeple have a false idea ef character. A~tually it is the outer expressien ef an inner beauty net semething silverplated, bU(: sterling threugh' and threugh. A person witheut character will take the c'ler ~f his surr~undings and he will finally be dragged down by hi~ weakness\ He will credit himself fer his success but blame his envirenment fer his failures. He is an eptimist abeut himself and a pessimist about ether pe.ple. Thus appears the man ef weak character.
By contrast a man of character will learn 0f his duty. He will nnt be swayed by whims and desires and he will buckle dewn under any situatien until he has cenquered.

In producing a play, the first requirement is a good cast. st. Mary's is not lacking in this respect.
In previous plays I could see the growth that was taking place in my acto~$, It was due to this very rapid growth that I dared to decide on producing and staging the marvellous play It The Empty Room tl •
Prior to this presentation, many who had seen the Operetta II The Woodcutter" and" The Prince" said it would be impossible to do anything better. The Operetta was well done and I came away with the feeling that we had real~ accomplished . ' something. I say this because the Operetta was a bit more difficult ~o ~o, ,pecause of the difficulty of having singing with acting. Here we must have fl~xibility. to the Dramatic Play. Although the students of St. Ma~ts did rtbt , hav~ , the experience needed for this, they pulled off a pe~formance that merited the sinber~ and infectious applause of the audience. , "'A-'
I vIas so thrilled with their encouraging progress that I 'again dec'ie.ed to tackle another difficult task-liThe Empty Rl")om". Here is a play that draws on tbe emotions of adults yet these students responded to the situations ill', the play so well, that one did not think of them as students, but as matured grown-ups '.
I was standing .in the wings, with the play in my hand, following &very line, in Case they needed prompting . Most of the time my eyes were so clouded .r could not see my script. Once I turned to Father Gautier to inquire about the sound and I e~ two very watery eyes., Not trusting himself to speak he nodded his head to show that all was right .
Father Lafrance stormed, li.Ii his usual way, back stage and said, " I didn't think it was possible -- they ",Jere excellent". The Indian Agent Mr.' Brown was equally excited.. One lady came back stage and said, It It is an honour and a pleasure to be here tonight".
A doctor, whose name I'll with hold, because of possible retribution, said "After that first'act, I made an excuse to leave for a few minutes". When I asked him I1I!Jhy", he said, II It 11 be darned if 1,111 let anyone see me with te ars in my eyes -- especially at my age tt . ,
To Sister Superior and her trusty band of ,'needle-pushers' go a big bouquet for a vlonderful job on the costwnes·. A willing hand was found in Gerry Dawson. He designed the scene~ and also helped realize it.
"The Empty Room" was a success -- it promises even better things to come. II The Empty Room" is one of the foundations f or better dramatics at st. Mary 's.
