Jeff Thomas was named thethird head coach in the history ofthe Liberty University golf programon June 14, 2004, replacing long-time head coach Frank Landreywho retired from his position inMay 2004.

"We are happy to promote Jeffto the position of head coach ashe has played a significant part inthe recent success of our men'sgolf program," commented formerathletic director Kim Graham. "It isalways gratifying to bring a Libertygraduate back to guide one of ourprograms. I am confident that Jeffwill continue to strive to better ourprogram's efforts in the Big Southand on the regional and nationalscenes."

Thomas joined the Flames'golf coaching staff during the2001-02 season and made animmediate impact on the programas he helped Liberty advance tothe NCAA Regionals for the firsttime in school history, becomingthe first Liberty program to receivean at-large bid to an NCAAChampionship.

"I am excited for the opportu-nity to become the next golf coachat this great Christian university,"said Thomas. "I would like tothank Coach Landrey for every-thing he has done for this programthroughout his career as Libertygolf coach. It is my desire to leadthis team in the direction in whichCoach Landrey has envisionedand planned."

As the assistant in 2004,Thomas helped guide the Flames

to a school-record team strokeaverage (297.94), an individualtournament victory at the DrewUpton Golf Classic, hosted byTowson, and helped six golfers fin-ish the season with averagesbelow 76, marking the first time inthe program's history that six indi-vidual golfers have finished withsub-76 averages.

In 2006, his second season atthe helm, Thomas led the Flamesback to the NCAA Regionals as anat-large team. The bid still makesthe golf team the only program atLiberty to earn an at-large nod toan NCAA Championship. The2006 Flames won three tourna-ments, including Campbell’sHargrove Davis Spring Classic,and placed second twice, includ-ing shooting a season-low 15-under at the James MadisonInvitational. Seven golfers fin-ished the season with averagesunder 76, which became anotherLiberty golf first.

Thomas was a four-year member of the Flames' golfprogram (1992-95) and graduatedfrom Liberty in 1995 with a bache-lor's degree in business manage-ment. Prior to coming to Liberty,Thomas served as an instructionalprofessional at River Hills CountryClub in Tampa, Fla., Walden LakeGolf and Country Club in PlantCity, Fla. and the head profession-al at Poplar Forest Golf Club inForest, Va., where he and his wife,Heidi, currently reside with theirthree daughters, Molly (4),Madeline (2) and Mia (1).

The former Liberty golferassists with recruiting, instructionand spiritual development withinthe golf program.

During the 2006 season, thenative of Spofford, N.H., played in11 events, where he averaged a76.6 over 24 rounds. Powers shotthe lowest round for Liberty at the2006 NCAA East Regional in LakeNona, Fla.

Prior to coming to Liberty,Powers was a standout at KeeneHigh Schoo,l where he was athree-time all-state golfer.

Powers earned a bachelor ofscience degree in religion with anemphasis in youth ministries in2005 and is currently working on aMaster’s of Divinity, with hopes ofgoing into full-time ministry. Hecurrently resides in Lynchburg.
