About Jerry Green Dog Rescue

It all started with a rescued spaniel named Rusty. Rusty had been such a faithful and loving companion throughout his life that his owner, Jerry Green, set up a Centre for stray and unwanted animals. Jerry Green felt that far too many dogs were being put to sleep unnecessarily so early in 1961 he was prompted to set up a Centre for stray and unwanted animals – that became Jerry Green Dog Rescue. For more than 55 years we have sheltered thousands of abandoned and unwanted dogs and turned their lives around by finding loving homes for them. Today, Jerry Green Dog Rescue has 5 rescue centres across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. A charity, we incorporated as a limited company in 2013, have an annual turnover of around £1.2 million which we use to run 5 rescue Centres in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Our Purpose Almost a decade ago we pioneered a method of rehoming we call Meet&Match®. Years of experience, now backed by scientific research, convinced us that allowing people to walk round the kennels caused unnecessary stress to our dogs. Instead, by finding out all we can about potential adopters, we introduce them to suitable dogs in calm more natural surroundings. We’re very proud that we pioneered an approach to rehoming dogs that is only now being adopted by the bigger rescue charities. We are committed to enabling as smooth a transition from rescue to home for Jerry Green dogs as possible and our approach to rehoming puts our dogs’ welfare at the heart of everything we do.

Our mission We exist to rescue and care for dogs, taking them in, treating them and ensuring the best possible quality of life at our Centres while we find them loving homes. We work with the communities we serve to raise awareness about what makes a happy dog, sharing our learning and knowledge through education about dog welfare and informing people about what we can all do to prevent cruelty and suffering.

Our vision We aspire to a future where welfare of animals is never compromised and every dog has the loving and secure home it deserves.

Our values We are:

• Purposeful - passionate about what we do. • Professional - using evidence based best practice alongside years of hands on.

experience to deliver the best outcomes we can for our dogs and their new adopters • But, above all we’re Personal – treating each dog and each person we work with, as an

individual, recognising their needs and adapting our approach to ensure those needs are met.

Our standards Our ethics are very important to us - from our Board to our front line workers – every one of us works with integrity – maintaining the belief that all dogs are equal and deserve an equal chance of finding a home.

Our Enterprise

Training & Paddock Hire As a rescue first and foremost we are most concerned that any dog we place in a home will stay there for the rest of their life. To ensure the best chance of that we will encourage each adopter to stay involved with our Training support as even dogs that have some previous training can (and lots of our dogs haven’t) benefit from focusing on building their new relationship. Clearly, we want only the positive types of training done with our rescue dogs. We show people how to use positive reinforcement, food and praise techniques in the home setting so that it works them in practical ways. We have expert trainers in each of our centres who can help. As dog owners ourselves we know what it’s like to be in that position where your beloved canine friend conveniently loses their hearing when it’s time to leave the park, when they pull on their lead and when they bark at the post lady.

How our new adopters interact with, and teach their dogs has a huge influence on their outlook on life and the choices they make. Nobody wants to get it wrong, but with so much conflicting advice out there, how can they know what is right? With a team of qualified, high skilled and experienced dog trainers we offer this service to both adopters and dog owners in general because more than anything else we want to help dog owners to get it right.

Aim: • To offer a desirable and competitive selection of training classes, workshops and

activities to adopters, customers and the general public of the South Lincolnshire locality • Raising income by providing training services to the dog owners in the local area and to

increase and expand income revenue to support the rescue dogs in our care. • Offering one to one behavioural advice, puppy socialisation, puppy obedience, agility

and workshops under the same umbrella of training. • Through this we aim to increase local education whilst raising a valuable income for the

charity.

9

The primary service is for customers who are looking to begin or advance training with their dog. We will provide a range of services to encourage positive and good handling practises alongside our Core Principles. Customers will have access to our trainer and an onsite shop area to view, choose and purchase any items to complement their training. Our unique selling point will be that the income generated from these sales goes back into supporting the welfare of dogs in our care. Our target market is dog owners in the immediate local area. These owners will be seeking training, enrichment, classes and fun activities for their dogs. These customers would be in the market place to buy products alongside services, depending on their disposable income.

Grooming & Wellbeing

We offer a professional Grooming service that means people can leave their dogs with our qualified Groomers for their haircut and freshen up and save themselves (and their bathrooms) the hard work! It’s fast becoming one of the most popular services for people with dogs. We are creating quality facilities for the dogs to be really looked after whilst they’re washed and bathed, cut and trimmed, sweet smelling and beautified! Promoting good dog welfare will be an essential part of providing our customers dogs’ with a great quality grooming service; positive handling, positive environment, quality equipment and kit. This will also include ‘Get your Dog Fresh Again!’ using JGDR bathing facilities (only) DIY. Our aim is to offer state-of-the-art grooming suites, complete with professional dog grooming equipment we’ll offer a service to the general public that offers us an income generation opportunity with limited impact on existing resources. The primary service is as a dog grooming enterprise where owners can bring their dog for welfare focused groom by our qualified dog groomer. All breeds and coat types will be welcome, with drop off and pick up times agreed to sustain a flow of clients without impacting

10

on current resources and kennel space. Our target market is dog owners in the local areas of our centres. These owners will be seeking a local business where they can receive the required groom for their dogs. We believe our bolt on services and USP will allow us to join the higher end of the pricing market. We plan to extend our profile and reputation through promotional activity whilst starting with competitive rates, in time we hope to increase our service charges to hold us at the top of the market for this enterprise activity. Additional bolt on services such as flexible drop off and pick up times which reflect the needs of the customers with busy working lifestyles. The Centre will also promote high welfare and grooming sessions for puppies and dogs with bad grooming memories – this will be unique to the organisation area. The profit will be put straight back into the charity and in turn, help with the upkeep and welfare of the dogs in our care, heartfelt importance to our adopters.

Grooming Enterprise Marketing Plan Key Messages:

Our Finances Our accounts are available on the Charity Commission website. We are happy to share the detail of these with anyone who wishes to see them. Like all animal welfare charities we receive no government funding and are funded solely through individual donations, property and investment management and through small amounts of trading which we plan to increase over the next three years, including opening our first charity shops. In 2014/15 we undertook a major investment by rebuilding our Nottinghamshire Centre spending £1.2 million to revolutionise our Kennels.

Where we are now and where we want to be: We are now writing up our longer term planning review as our three-year Strategic Plan ends next year. Creating a longer terms strategic plan and an annual rolling business plan will enable monitoring activities and finances fit with our objectives. Our Fundraising and Business Plans 2015 – 2018 aimed to halve our 2015 deficit which stood at -£860,629 by the end of 2018 and to be in a healthy surplus by the end of 2020, thus sustaining our ability to manage fluctuations in income in the future. This year our projected deficit was almost £350,000. Our actual income is expected to be less than planned at £1.14m but we have controlled spending, which we expect to be £1.74; this results in an operating deficit just over -£600,000. Our investments however bring our deficit into line with our deficit forecast. We aim by 2021 to be in surplus through operational income, fundraising and enterprise. Our aim for income generation is that we might better use Jerry Green’s legacy to not just operate on an everyday basis, but sustain and develop our kennels and rescue Centres so we develop his legacy into the future.

Our New Fundraising Team We are recruiting a Head of Income Generation to lead a new Fundraising and Finance Team.

Creating specialist fundraising teams: We’ve created specialist functions so that each team’s form follows its function so we’re just introducing small thematic fundraising teams based on our Fundraising Plans’ pillars:

• Individual Giving • Corporates & Grants • Community Fundraising • Digital Communications and Fundraising

• Individual Giving Team

o 2 FTE working on legacies, acquisition and retention of regular givers and HNW & Major Donors, In Memory Giving, Gift Aid take up.

• Corporate Giving & Grants Fundraiser

o 1 FTE developing our corporate sponsors and grants, as well as making more of the more traditional grants from Trusts and one off funds.

• Community Fundraising Team o 2 FTE developing Peer to Peer fundraising, Friends of Groups at the Centres and

implementing our developing Events programme.

• Digital Comms & Fundraiser o Including support of our new website, social media, online appeals & campaigns,

and venturing into crowd funding! The core function of these ‘teams’ is two-fold: to work throughout the charity to build fundraising capacity to acquire new supporters – so it genuinely becomes part of everyone’s’ job - and to facilitate increased centrally-coordinated relationship-building to upgrade and retain our donors and supporters stewarding from adopter and customer.

Building fundraising and income generation infrastructure: We are bringing in a Head of Income Generation to a centrally co-ordinated Fundraising Team aiming to increase controls, reduce overheads and improve co-ordination of CRM. Our central systems and processes have been updated, getting us ready for GDPR. This year we invested in an upgrade from Raiser’s Edge to NXT, committing for the first time to adopt a genuinely integrated CRM system to build lifelong support and raise more money from our adopters, service users and supporters and increase our impact like never before. After a rebrand in the summer we’re also investing in external designers to produce better quality branded marketing, communications and professional fundraising materials.

Who we’re looking for

What skills we’d like you to bring: It goes without saying we’re looking for people who have a love of dogs - sounds obvious we know, but our donors and supporters, staff and volunteers - and of course our dogs - will sniff out how much you love dogs like any good dog would! But you also need to love people. Our priorities over the next three years are to ensure - 1. Sustainable growth of our finances

2. Development of our paid and unpaid workforce

3. Maintenance and improvement of our buildings

4. Building our reputation and profile

5. Change in our culture to be more enterprising

6. We are fit for our purpose

As Head of Income Generation, you will be integral to each of these strategic priorities.
