A joint message from the

president THE CEO

the second phase of the Projet SAGE (système d’apprentissage globale et évolutif). From the start, the permanent employees receive thorough training: online, in the classroom and on-the-job; in connection with performance indica-tors and a recognition program. There are also new leadership and coaching programs for the management to help them grow with their daily responsibi-lities and better equip them to support their teams.

Renaissance’s job training mission necessitates a solid economic base since the organization aims to be more than 80% self-financing, due to the revenue generated by the Fripe Prix Stores and Bookstores. Renaissance therefore continued its expansion stra-tegy by opening four donation centers in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and for the first time in St-Hubert, along with a Book Store in St-Leonard. Renaissance also plans to open a new store in 2017, to move forward with the extension the Cote-des-Neiges store as well as adding four more Donation Centres. The opening of each new Renaissance site is meticulously planned and in fact pro-duces excellent results! A great example is the Fripe Prix Henri Bourassa, which has already made a name for itself by winning the Gala Elite Prize for Retail from the Montreal North Chamber of Commerce and Industry, less than one year after opening!

Last year our annual report was titled In Movement because there had been so much evolution during the previous twelve months. If we hadn’t been concerned with a lack of originality on our part, we could have appropria-tely named this edition Volume 2-the effervescence and progress continued this year.

The achievements we are proudest of certainly involve our participants. At Renaissance, we saw people accom-plish wonderful things through their perseverance and hard work, aided by our dedicated team. In 2016-2017, 83.83% among them landed a job or returned to school upon completion of their training program, in all, 219 people.

The needs are great, which is why Renaissance in accordance with its mission is working to broaden the range of services offered to people who are excluded from the work force. For example, there is the pilot project of employment assistance services available to everyone. Opened originally in the Fripe-Prix St. Laurent store, the service was so popular that Renaissance decided to integrate it into several other stores in response to the real need in our community for employment integration. Add to that the creation of a new training program within a Book Store (in the Plateau) which will enable participants to develop specialized skills in retail sales and broaden the number of training programs.

Our organization paid particular attention to the improvement of skills for our permanent employees by implementing

The duality of Renaissance, which combines the support and growth of its training program as well as the deve-lopment of its business model means that the organization must meet colos-sal challenges. A position of Assistant Director was created: Eric St. Arnaud who has many years of managerial experience with the team will assume this role with his well- known enthusiasm.

We want to conclude by expressing our gratitude to all who show us every day their dedication, their solidarity and their involvement: donors, members of the Board of Directors, employees, volunteers, partners and of course, participants, everyone accepts to put their shoulder to the wheel and aim for a society which is more humane, more just and more respectful of the environment.

Thank you from the bottom of ur hearts!

and

The “Projet SAGE” (système d’appren-tissage globale et évolutif) was imple-mented in 2015 to address the training needs of the permanent staff. The online training that combines theory and practise was initially geared towards Donation Center attendants, sorters and ticketers. The “Projet SAGE” is supervised by the coordinator Selena LaChappelle in collaboration with Ellicom, a company specialized in online training. The design phase was completed in June 2016, with the implementation of a progressing system (from beginner to expert levels). The next phase is already underway; the introductory information capsules for the employees’ first day are ready and work is being done on specialized training for each position. This online program will be an indispensible complement to the ongoing staff training in the classroom and in the store. In 2017, “Projet SAGE” will also be used for the position of sales clerk, changing room clerk and cashier. It is an ambitious project to improve skills on many different levels!

Supporting our Management TeamIn parallel to our staff training, it seemed important that we equip our management team so that they could provide better guidance to their staff. Johanne Campeau, formerly assistant to the director of ope-rations and sales, is now responsible for leadership and coaching. The goal of this pilot project is to support the managers in the sales and operations departments so that they can become leaders in their respective fields.

Leadership ProgramDuring the first session, people from varied backgrounds met in order to demystify the leader’s role, to comment on the definitions of various values and then to pinpoint Renaissance’s values. The values which were retained would then be brought to each work site where the employees are encouraged to discuss them and suggest others-with the aim of adopting those which best define Renaissance. A real brainstorming session is underway!

Coaching ProgramThe individual coaching sessions have also begun and each member of the management team can benefit from these appointments. It is a valuable and confi-dential opportunity to take time to look at the various aspects of managerial work, and it is up to the individual to decide how many sessions are necessary. The aim of the program is to foster personal growth and to ensure that the managers make good decisions and become more serene and confident in their roles. This support program is especially crucial given that the managers often intervene in complex situations that require a good deal of tact and expertise.

Staff training at Renaissance

At Renaissance, used items are recovered, people are reintegrated and the donations are reinvested in the community. This triple purpose certainly gives meaning to the organization and makes Renaissance a model of sustainable development.

Renaissance is an organization resolu-tely turned towards the future, based on the logic of the social economy. In other words, it is based on the development of a durable economic model which supports social initiatives. People are the main beneficiaries of Renaissance’s economic activities because all of the generated revenue is invested directly into the mission of workforce integration and the ongoing sustainability of the organization.

Renaissance remains committed to helping its employees to progress. The training component is vital because it helps the staff to develop both their knowledge and improve their skills.

At Renaissance, it is not uncommon for employees or participants who started as sorters, ticketers or cashiers to rise to the positions of supervisors, assistant mana-gers or even managers. It is a real source of pride at Renaissance that everyone is given the possibility to advance and flourish in their workplace. Renaissance has implemented several different training programs to achieve these goals.

elena has a certificate in Human Resources

Management and Business Administration. She worked for ten years in the telecom sector, where she rose through the ranks to become Director of Customer Service. In 2010, she decided to change course, and put her expertise to good use for social causes. She was hired at Renaissance and became manager at the Fripe Prix Côte des Neiges, and then later at the Pie IX store. “I love working for an organization which has a heart. It is the human touch that I like most about Renaissance.”

In 2013, Renaissance felt the need to develop a training program for the permanent staff. With her knowledge of the inner-workings of the stores, her experience and background in Human Resource Management, Selena was the ideal person to head the project. Her mandate is to develop and update the training tools with the aim of supporting the operations throughout Renaissance.

The concept of mixing both theoretical and practical training was accepted and thus the “Projet SAGÉ” (système d’apprentissage globale et évolutif) was launched! “I derive a lot of personal satisfaction in managing this project because I learn new things every day and above all I am able to relay this knowledge to others.” Selena is res-ponsible for the development and implementation of the online training used to improve the efficiency of certain key positions of the operations staff; notably the donation attendants, sorters and ticketers. “My position is stimulating because I am developing new skills, whether in online training, video tech-niques and editing or teaching. This covers many areas and helps me to progress!”

The “Projet SAGE” is entering its second phase and will spread to other positions in the organization and Selena antici-pates that she will continue to learn, to make further progress and to help her colleagues do the same. Isn’t that exactly what one would wish for in a Training Coordinator?

“I love working for an organization which has a heart. It is the human touch that I like most about Renaissance.”

The reason for our success is the 26-week training program during which a socio-professional counsellor and the manage-ment team in the store accompany the participant towards stable employment. This personalized training addresses the development of appropriate attitudes essential to obtaining a job, as well as the acquisition of the skills for retail sales, stock handling, housekeeping or bookkeeping. Throughout the training, skills are evaluated to help the partici-pant to progress and to consolidate their achievements. During the final weeks, the participants learn to highlight their acquired skills and talents and initiate a supervised job search. This paid training program is a recipe for success as shown by the placement rate that reached 83.83% this year.

26 weeks in-store training program:

Weeks 1-4: acclimatisation, integration and technical training

Weeks 5-7 : 1st evaluation of skills and consolidation of the achievements

Weeks 8-12: training at the cash and initiation of the exit project

Weeks 13-20: 2nd evaluation of skills and the detailing of the exit project

Weeks 21-26: 3rd evaluation of skills and start of job search.

January 2017Creation of the first specialized training program in the Plateau Bookstore in January 2017 raises the number of current active participants at Renaissance to 129. This 6 month training program will help the participants to acquire all the skills necessary to return to the workforce. Renaissance is part of the Collectif des Entreprises d’Insertion du Québec, a large family with fifty members who, through various economic activities, help turn their wheel and move the society ahead.

Reintegration is both the end and the means. It is a wheel that turns and generates multifaceted energy for our participants: financial autonomy, enhanced self-esteem, expansion of the social fabric, in short, a better life.

The training program

Certification Renaissance offers two years of support for participants who are still looking for work after their training. There is a designated room located at the Head Office which is available to them without appointment many times during the week.

In November 2016, Renaissance began a pi-lot project in its Fripe Prix Masson store and at the Distribution Centre. Here participants training as cashiers-salesclerks, sorters, stock handlers and janitorial assistants can obtain a certificate in a semi-specialized trade (CFMS) issued by the Commission Scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Even if the participants have not completed high school, this certificate offers them prio-rity access to 21 different DVS programs (Diploma of Vocational Studies).

05“Renaissance showed me how to assert myself and I gained self-confidence.”

inda arrived in Québec in 1990 and began

working in sewing, a trade she had already done in Haiti. Following the crisis in the textile industry, she was out of work and in 2010 went in search of a new job. “It is difficult to find work when you reach a certain age, especially when you have worked your whole life in the same field and you don’t know anything else.”Linda thought that it was the end of her professional life and she expec-ted a modest retirement ahead. “When one doesn’t work for a while, one loses autonomy and we lose self-esteem. It becomes a vicious circle.”

In November 2015, one of her friends told her about the job training offered at Renaissance; she went there and immediately began her training at the St-Laurent store. “I learned a tremen-dous amount about retail sales, work on a cash register and I really liked the contact with the clients.”Linda felt supported by the training team. At the end of her training, her socio-professio-nal counsellor helped her rework her CV and to prepare for interviews.

“Renaissance showed me how to assert myself and I gained self-confidence.” She didn’t have to wait long for the results. Linda found full-time work as a lunchtime monitor at l’école des Cinq Continents with children in difficulty. These days, she is devoted to this job she loves and hopes to stay there until she retires. “I am very grateful to Renaissance, I was in darkness and suddenly I found hope.”

oussa has his bachelor’s degree

in Social Science. His Burundian wife who has been in Québec for a while sponsored him. They have a six-month old baby.

“It was difficult to find work here because I had no experience at all.” Moussa learned about Renaissance and its training program through Emploi-Québec. After two days of training, he was assigned to the St-Hubert store. He is very happy there!

“I am autonomous, I am able to manage my schedule and my tasks. The team and the clients are happy, they encourage me, they have confidence in me and it inspires me to continue to do a good job.”

Moussa is convinced that the training will change a lot of things for him. “In addition to giving me my first work experience, the training also helps me to understand the local culture and to see how things function.”

He plans to take the necessary steps to have his degree recognized, but for the time being he hopes to keep working and thus assure a good quality of life for his wife and child.

Renaissance developed its economic activity to reduce the pressure on the environment, consumer goods are recovered and resold in its stores. In 2016-2017, a total of 11, 310 tons of goods were diverted from landfill sites, the equivalent of 70 blue whales. This environmental action was recognized by the Brundtland Green Establishment Network, who renewed our certification. We also received a Level 2 certification from ICI ON RECYCLE!

Renaissance makes it easier to support its double mission by simplifying the donation process. People can safely drop off their used goods or at one of the organization’s 41 collection points such as

a Fripe Prix store, a Book Store, the Liquidation Centre, one of the Renaissance Donation Centres or in one of the 16 donation bins. These local service points are being generously supported by both the citizens and elected officials alike.

Renaissance is present in 24 cities and boroughs in the Greater Montreal Area. It has never been easier to act ecologically and in solidarity by donating used goods so that they can be re-used. In 2016-2017, 646 336 people made the choice to give to Renaissance, for the environment, society and especially for people without work.

The Renaissance challenge 2016

The donation campaigns

During this friendly competition, 24 cities and boroughs face off to win one of the three honorary prizes. The fourteenth and fifteenth editions crowned the Côte-des-Neiges-NDG borough for the most donations collected and Dorval for the most donations collected per 1000 residents. The Plateau Mont-Royal borough won for the highest increase in donations in the spring, while Longueuil won in the Fall. No doubt that the new Renaissance Donation Centre opened during the year on Chambly Road in Longueuil contributed to the excellent performance by our friends on the South Shore.

Every year during the change of seasons in the spring and in the fall, Renaissance organizes donation campaigns to collect used goods and to sensitize people about the importance of reuse and reintegra-tion. In 2016-2017, this was done with the help of Ginette Reno, Luc Langevin and Sugar Sammy who lent their support by appearing in our televised ad campaign. We are very grateful for their generous commitment.

During these campaigns, Renaissance recovered 3 484 670 pounds of clothing and household goods, which represents an increase of 9% in the spring and 19% in the fall compared to previous campaigns. Our donors were also very generous during our third consecutive Christmas campaign, giving a second life to their goods while gi-ving a second chance to the unemployed. We would like to express our gratitude to them for this magnificent year.

The donation trail

Renaissance aims mainly for the re-use of its donated goods: they are sorted and put for sale in the stores. If they remain unsold they are sent to the Liquidation Centre, where they are sold at a discount or by the pound. Despite our best efforts for “zero waste”, some goods that would be reusable do not find any buyers. Renaissance has forged agreements with various partners who recycle or re-use and thus are able to recycle or repurpose up to 85% of the unused goods. The Renaissance Distribution Centre manages the preparation and shipping of the merchandise that will find new uses:

• Bales of clothing are used in upholstery or in insulation;

• Accessories, dishes and books are sent to schools or organizations who need them,

riginally from Libya, Maryam has a diploma

in economics and administration. She worked as a translator in the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later as an administrative assistant in the petroleum industry. Following the death of her husband, she decided to leave her country and immigrated to Canada. She arrived in British Columbia in 2012 and held several jobs in the hotel industry, but she longed to speak French in her professional life. In 2016, she moved to Québec. “I had trouble to integrate into the workforce because I did not have any work experience in Québec.” The Montreal Women’s Centre recommended that she enrol in the job-training pro-gram at Renaissance, and she began as a cashier-sales clerk-sorter in March, 2016.

“I had a very warm welcome, support and good advice from the whole team. My socio-professional counsellor helped me so much and motivated me! There is a follow-up as well as the training. I learned so much in those six months.” At the end of her training, Maryam looked for full time stable employment and she was hired in Customer Service at Rona. Along with her job, she is also following a correspondence course in secretarial training three times a week. Maryam hopes to have her professional diploma by the fall of 2017, which will qualify her to work as a legal secretary. “I am very optimistic about my future.”

Starting in June 2016, our Fripe Prix stores got a standardized new look. The aim of this facelift is to better inform our clients and to offer them a more pleasant shopping experience in our stores. The flow in the aisles is easier and more fluid, and the larger signs designating the different depart-ments are hung higher. Everything now sports the Renaissance colours. Furthermore, the signs indicating the categories and prices are in a streamlined style that makes shopping easier for the clients.

Since September 2016, our clients can easily spot Renaissance staff wearing their green shirts and dark blue aprons. The integration of the uniforms has also spread to the Book Stores, Donation Centres as well as the Distribution Centre. The Transportation Department and building maintenance crew have navy blue uniforms. The clothing is all made by the “Petite-Mains”, a long-time partner whose mission is the re- integration of women into the workforce.

uerson arrived in Montreal when he was

twenty-three years old, and worked for the next nineteen years at the Canadian National Railway. At first, he worked as a truck driver, then worked his way up the ranks to supervisor, operator, signaler and then inspector. He took an early retirement but realized after six years he wasn’t very active but still had several more years before actual retirement. He started to look for work, but it wasn’t easy at fifty-five. The government sent him to a community group that referred him to Renaissance. “The first day was already a victory for me because I knew that I was being given the chance to reintegrate back into the workforce.”

Supported and encouraged by the team, Guerson was fully committed to the training as a stock-handler-forklift ope-rator. He also motivated his colleagues. “The socio-professional counsellors do a colossal job and Renaissance is a useful organization for society. We feel accompanied and supported form start to finish.” Guerson just finished his training, and he already has several possibilities for jobs that are being finalized. “I regained self-confidence and I only have good things to say about my experience at Renaissance.”

Igloofest and the Village Nordik

Concordia University Anti-consumerism Week

No to wasted food!

Two projects with Equiterre

In conjunction with Montreal’s 375th anniversary and the Igloofest, Renaissance joined up with the architectural firm L. McComba for its IglooCelcius project by providing 10,000 pounds of clothing. The igloo was heated by solar energy and used discarded clothing destined for recycling as insulation. A nice way to highlight eco-housing, re-use and the environment!

Renaissance partnered with the Concordia Student Union for its Anti-Consumerism Week. They organized a clothing drive at Concordia during the month of January with a clothing swap at the end. All remaining items were donated to Renaissance.

In December 2016, Renaissance took part in an ambitious project led by Thibault Renouf and Guillaume Cantin (former chef at “Les 400 Coups” restaurant). Their aim is to sensitize Montrealers about the problem of wasted food. Renaissance gladly lent some dishes for the gastronomic feast that was prepared solely with food that was still good but that had been discarded by Montreal area grocery stores. A brilliant idea! It absolutely must be repeated!

Change the World with Équiterre Run

During the race organized by Équiterre on July 3, 2016 Renaissance recovered donations of new and used articles and

Organic baskets from its family farmers network

In summer and winter, one can eat organic vegetables grown locally by Équiterre’s network of family farmers. Since the summer of 2016, Renaissance has been a partner of this promising, ambitious and committed project. The Donation Centre of the Fripe Prix St-Laurent store has become a pick up depot for these organic baskets. During the winter of 2016, four other Renaissance Donation Centres also became pick up sites for BioLocaux baskets; a network of farmers supported by Équiterre. Renaissance is thrilled to be part of this movement and plans to continue with the project until 2019, expecting that it will extend to other locations.

Les Fees MarrainesSince September 2016, Renaissance has been associated with the Les Fées Marraines project whose aim is to provide underprivileged Montreal area Secondary 5 graduates with the chance to attend their Graduation Ball. The collection point is the Donation Centre at the Fripe Prix Renaissance in Montreal North, located at 5500 Henri Bourassa East. The Les Fées Marraines project is accepting ball gowns, shoes, evening bags and other accessories for the young students.

arie Josée is in training at the

Saint-Laurent Fripe-Prix store, as a cashier-salesclerk-sorter. She is mostly involved with ticketing the clothing but will also get training in Customer Service.

“I was looking for a job to finance my studies, because I would like to get a professional diploma in secretarial services to work as an administrative assistant in a school.”

Because she lacked professional work experience, potential employers did not even reply to her job applications. While shopping at Renaissance, she spotted a poster in the store describing the training program. She called and eve-rything went very quickly! “I am well supported and given good advice, the team is very dynamic!”

Marie-Josée is certain that the training will really help her and enable her to gain the necessary experience to get another job. “What I actually want to do is to return to school obtain my DVS diploma.”

The Renaissance model of the social economy aims to help as many people as possible. Therefore, in June 2016, the organization inaugurated a job search site at the St. Laurent Fripe-Prix store where a counsellor provides free guidance to people who are looking for work. Due to the very positive response to this project, it will be replicated in other stores.

Giving to Renaissance: a helping hand for others

Volunteers with Hearts of gold

Tidying up closets may seem like a mundane task, but when the reusable clutter is donated to Renaissance, it metamorphoses into a humanitarian gesture. In fact, all the revenue generated by the donations are 100% invested in the job training program at Renaissance that helps hundreds of people each year to rebuild themselves, regain their self confidence and autonomy and reclaim their place in society.

When there are days more difficult than others, whether for the participants or the staff, it is often these wonderful volunteers who boost morale or bring a smile with a lovely lesson in courage and resilience. There are 91 volunteers who have an intellectual and/or physical disability and work every day in the stores, the bookstores and at the Distribution Centre. They are supervised and supported in their work at Renaissance by organizations like the West Montreal Readaptation Centre, the Centre François-Michelle, the Centre de Réadatation Lisette-Dupras, the CRDITED de Montréal, the CRDI Gabrielle-Major, the CRDI Normand-Laramée and John Grant High School.

Shopping at Renaissance is good for your wallet and for othersThe reusable items donated to Renais-sance are sorted, ticketed and sold in the network of stores at low prices and tax-free. This makes a huge difference in the quality of the daily lives of people and families with modest incomes. The economic activity at Renaissance finances 85% of the expenses linked to the job training programs, which is a true springboard towards employment for people, excluded from the job market.

Emploi-quebec, a long-time friendSince 1996, this faithful partner has sup-ported Renaissance in its mission and its job-training program, thanks to which 3,580 people returned to the job market or to school, so far. This year, according to the agreement between the two organizations, Emploi-Québec supplied 15% of the revenue of Renaissance, to cover the cost of the training staff and the salaries of the participants. Thank you to Emploi-Québec for such unwavering trust and support.

our employee gatherings were held this year. Organized at the end of each trimester, they recognized the work sites that obtained the best results in placements, sales and

customer service. These events are opportunities for everyone to meet up, to introduce new employees and to update everyone on the news of the organization. These special moments gathering together the members of the Renaissance family continue to grow!
