from Danny McCarns, Executive Director

Thank you for a wonderful year. Because of you, 2017 has been a success forPeppermint Ridge in so many ways. Together, we have been able to continueour commitment to support people with developmental disabilities in respect-ful, consistent and imaginative directions. In this year’s annual report, you will get a glimpse of the quality and quan-tity of services provided last year. I hope you can feel the sense of accomplish-ment, empowerment and enjoyment experienced by The Ridgers during theseactivities. Our strong financial position demonstrates the care taken to managethe resources that have been entrusted to us to ensure the continued viabilityof The Ridge. Our Leisure and Activity Program is growing. Each quarter, Ridgers can signup for the activities they would like to take, whether it be gardening, yoga, singing, drumming, reading or other classes. We have also welcomed a newactivity assistant to help teach courses and get folks to their chosen activities. Some of the wonderful activities people were able to enjoy last year includedcamp in the nearby mountains, swimming from May to September in our ownstaffed pool, attending a variety of sports events, art classes, music classes, birth-day celebrations and, of course, the Annual BBQ on the 4th of July. At present, we do not have enough room or time in the evenings or on week-ends to offer all the activities available to our Ridgers. However, we have a solu-tion: a new modular Activity Center, which we anticipate will be installed by theend of 2018, and will be twice the size of Angel Hall where activities are presentlyconducted. At the time I write this, the City of Corona has already stepped forwardwith a grant to help with this wonderful endeavor. We made some major repairs and improvements to our homes and aroundthe campus, including fresh coats of paint for some, and gardens with more flow-ers and veggies, as well as a new tool shed. Bathrooms and new bedroom floorswere remodeled, including cushioning material to protect from serious injuries.Twenty-four individuals have new key pad locks on their bedroom doors to ensuretheir privacy, and we were able to replace some older appliances and furniture. We purchased two vans and received another through the Cal Trans grant process. As a member of the community, we believe strongly in giving back and weregularly volunteer to help other organizations. In turn, there are so many of thosewho share their gifts and talents with us. Those who volunteer at The Ridge areamazing, and we are grateful for their loving hearts and hands. Business ownersand the community at large continue to embrace the Ridgers through sponsor-ships, services and donations. Thank you to our long-time donors who generouslygave more, and to new donors who have joined us in our mission. Thank you for making a huge difference in the lives of the Ridgers. Becauseof your generosity the men and women of Peppermint Ridge have rich and fulllives, a place to call home, and friends with whom they can share their hopes anddreams. We are very fortunate indeed.

Sincerely,

from Mike Ryan,Chairperson of the Board

It’s a great privilege for me to share a bit about the enormous difference youmake at The Ridge. The Ridge continues to help those with developmental disabilities to pavea path to independence, acceptance, and meaningful community. But this richerlife is not accomplished without the many business and community partnersthat The Ridge calls “family.” As one of these, I’m excited to invite you to lookthrough the pages within this annual report and realize that we could not havedone this without you. You’ll read about the fun that Ridgers had last summer during the annualPilgrim Pines adventure. You’ll see how Debbie R. and other Ridgers have gainedstrength and independence working out at CrossFit with ABC Hopes, Inc. Andyou’ll see the smile on Ricky S.’ face as he shows off his award at the 4th of Julycelebration. Through great love and dedication, Ridge staff provides excellent servicesto these very special members of our community. It’s gratifying for me to thinkof the rest of us playing our part as we contribute through: FINANCIAL SUPPORT: In 2017, Peppermint Ridge was blessed to receivemore than $800,000 through your kindness. You and others like you put on yourrunning shoes and participated in the “Run the River for the Ridge”. You dressedup in your finest attire to attend the Peppermint Possibilities gala. You con-tributed through the Match Campaign, where each dollar given was doubled, thanks to the kindness of a long-time supporter. And you began to send fundsfor our much needed Activities Center, to open later in 2018. DEDICATED VOLUNTEERISM: Last year, you and others like you spread theword about Peppermint Ridge with friends and neighbors, inviting them to be-come better acquainted witwho we are and what we do. You volunteered yourtime beautifying the grounds, hosting the monthly birthday parties, assistingsupporters at events, or even serving Thanksgiving dinner. COMMITTED ADVOCACY: You played a role of positive change in the com-munity to show others that people with special needs also have hopes, dreams, and abilities. You showed this when you galvanized elected officials to becomeinterested in the Ridge and its cause. And you advocated each time you engageda Ridger in the community. So you see, we couldn’t do what we do without you. Thank you for beinga part of the Ridge family.

With gratitude,

ABC Hopes – CrossFitOur partnership with ABC Hopes officiallylaunched in 2017 through the ABC Hopes (dis)ABILITIES Fitness Program. Through thisprogram, Ridgers have been attending CrossFitat CrossFit Proper in Corona. This activity has been very popular and beneficial for theRidgers. Katie Moore, the Founder and ExecutiveDirector of ABC Hopes Inc. shares: “Through theworkouts, participants gain muscle mass andimprove coordination. In addition, the confidenceand mental stimulation that the workouts provideoutweigh the physical benefits. We have seenan overall improvement in this population's mental health and overall confidence.” CrossFit Proper Trainer and ABC Hopes Inc.(dis)Abilities Director of Training, Christian Aguirreshared that “it boils down to two big things...capabilities and community.” With the help of volunteers and staff, Ridgers are able to see improvement and work towards their goals. Aguirre shared that Ridger, Missy S., who usesa walker, started the program with the legstrength and confidence to squat down ontoa 20-inch box. As she has progressed in the pro-gram, so have her capabilities. She is now ableto do a full workout and squat all the way downto a medicine ball! The functional strengthobtained from CrossFit makes it easier to get upfrom a chair, walk straighter, and pick up thingsfrom the floor. There is a strong sense of community at thegym. Members of CrossFit Proper greet ourRidgers, have conversations, and even playbasketball before the workouts begin. AsRidgers work out, “Proper” members are cheer-ing them on. “It's great to see them integratewith the community because at the end of the day,we are more similar than different,” said Aguirre.

Activity SpotlightThe ADAPTIVE AND EDUCATIONAL RECREATION PROGRAM offers a variety of activities, clubs, and classes designed tohelp each individual reach their personal goals. Topic areas include: Fine Arts, Music Expression, Fitness and Sports, and Freedom in Learning.

“In-Kind” Donations Make a Big Difference at Peppermint RidgeWe are also blessed by gifts in kind, so for those of you who have thought of us in this way, a big "thank you!"

In-kind donations may take the form of new or gently used items like furniture, household items, durable medical equipment, or electronics

such as new TVs for residents. These really make a difference for the residents who need them. Business owners who donate services or items

relevant to their industry are invaluable. For example, traffic control services donated by “A Cone Zone” for the “Run the River for the

Ridge” fundraiser saves The Ridge thousands of dollars.

Many people have donated auction items which enhance event income. The “Cave Dinner Experience” that has become a much sought-after

item at the Peppermint Possibilities banquet has been available because of the generosity of George and Carol Tillery and Matthew and Nicole

Stopher.

We are truly grateful to each of you who donates in this way. Together you helped create a wonderful life for the Ridgers.

Not sure your in-kind gift can benefit the Ridge? Contact Tracy Mauser at 951 273-7329 or [email protected].

RememberingNancy A. Newman had a huge heart and a spirit that was creative and loving. Sherecognized the good in others and took the time and effort to lift them up by herwords and deeds. Nancy joined The Ridge family in 1995 when her brother, Paul, moved to Del Park. Although Paul passed away in 2003, Nancy continued her strongsupport of Peppermint Ridge with gifts of time and treasure until her passing inNovember 2017. As a member of the Roger Jeffery Guardian Circle, Nancy’s foresight and gen-erosity in naming Peppermint Ridge in her estate plan helped us continue to providequality care to each Ridger.
