It was much utilised by practioners. This was a relatively late edition, with new material.

Boards and end papers a little browned, top edge marked, generally vg. £40.00Extremely interesting and detailed account of what was then a relatively new product, especially in the mass market. Excellent technical details and very good illustrations of examples, including concrete houses and many other products.

Considere’s Researches

[30941] xii, 242pp inc figs. Cloth, 23x16. Book has been water damaged leaving the rear cover badly marked

and the pages stiff. However, the text is still bright and servicable and the binding tight. £30.00Considere's researches, published as papers between 1898 and 1902, made a valuable contribution to the development of this material. The present work did much to disseminate this information in America.

£120.00The author was involved with the manufacture of this product throughout his career. Its invention had enormous importance for 19th century building and civil engineering and made reinforced concrete, which was patented in 1824 by Joseph Aspdin, possible. Very scarce.-----------------

Binding is tight and rest of contents vg with lovely illustrations. £35.00UK edition, with UK examples. The original American edition was issued in 1896. The product, much utilized for reinforce concrete, was applicable to many types of construction, from tea-houses to workers' lodgings. It was popular for its fire-resistent properties.

Includes good historical section and survey of the various concrete systems. Uncommon.

Hennebique’s methods described

This edition is in two parts. Part one is a description of the Hennebique methods with properties of the material, part two, the majority of the book, is a wonderful photographic record with many fascinating examples eg Michelin Building, London, Regents Street Polytechnic, water towers, cinemas, viaducts, reservoirs etc.

Thomas Potter – concrete innovator

Very nice copy. £85.00Early work on concrete ‘....a material that has yet undoubtedly to come into more general use.’ Potter was Clerk of Works to Lord Ashburton and his book has a nice illustration of concrete farm buildings on

the Ashburton Estate. There is much interesting material on building types, manufacturing techniques etc. A scarce and fascinating work.

23 POTTER Thomas Concrete: Its Use in Building and the Construction of Concrete Walls, Floors etc. 2 uniform volumes.London, Spon, (1877), 1891, new ed, entirely rewritten, [31042] Vol 1; xxiii, 184pp inc 18 figs and adverts. Vol 2; xxiii, 290pp inc 96 figs plus 12 pp publisher's adverts. Cloth, 19x13. Inner hinge vol 1 cracked else very nice copies. £120.00The first volume deals with the manufacturing process and the materials required: the second deals with its application to buildings, eg walls, floors, concrete roofs etc. The author quotes examples with named architects. The second and said to be the best edition, now in two volumes. Many developments had takes place since the first edition.

Artificial concretes – an early work

Lovely colour plates of marble mosaic tiles by J&H Patteson. Methods and materials for construction of concrete, both natural and artificial, in the USA, Europe and the UK. Thus there is a material on the German Portland Cement industry, construction of the Thames Embankment and the Houses of Parliament, Liverpool Docks, the Philadelphia expo etc. Domestic housing also features, including a design by Norman Shaw and extracts from Chadwick's reports on concrete cottages.--------------------

Good copy in rather browned dust wrapper, this with small scuff on front. £15.00Good limestone is an excellent ingredient for concrete, especially when a high degree of fire resistance is required.

The “Steelcrete” System

Many major buildings in Canada were constructed in Steelcrete eg the Royal Mint at Ottawa, Toronto General Hospital, various banks, Winnipeg Post Office, University of Toronto library etc. The system was said to be especially valuable for its fire-proof qualities. ---------------

Examples include the McKim, Meade and White's municipal building in New York and the Alcazar Theater in San Francisco.

Examples from the Universal Exposition, 1967. The work claims to be 'the most comprehensive and exhaustive treatise hitherto issued' [on] 'the buildings arts' so far published. It was much utilised by Victorian architects and builders and is still a valuable source. Plates are all nice and fresh.---------------

guards, images mostly not affected. Cloth is rubbed head and tail of spine, soiled on back, still a fair copy of a splendid book. Binding is tight. £900.00Alan Stevenson (1807-1865) was one of the famous Stevenson family of Scottish engineers. He succeeded his father as engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board and built 13 lighthouses in and around Scotland. Skerryvore, constructed on a remote reef 12 miles south west of Tiree 1838-44, was one of his greatest achievements. There were many construction difficulties. Skerryvore is the tallest lighthouse in the UK. An extremely detailed account of the building of the lighthouse with fine plates, maps etc.-----------------

Simon (1816-1904) was the first Medical Officer of Health for the City of London and active in tackling the metropolis’ sanitary problems. Very informative and considered to have had a big influence on public health developments and legislation.

£120.00This great project for GWR took 16 years to complete. It was built under the leadership of Sir John Hawkshaw. There was a serious flood in 1879 and others subsequently. A special pumping station designed by Thomas Walker, author of this work, helped solve the problem. The tunnel was finally opened in 1886. Still one of the best accounts of the project.---------------------

also a good contemporary source for heating and ventilation problems generally. The Sturtevant system was very concerned with ventilation for health and well being. Includes some very interesting case studies in prisons, offices, mills etc.

A fine contemporary guide and celebration of this great skyscraper, then the tallest in the world. Unlike most later skyscrapers it had a great many decorative details, some in the gothic style. The interiors were also very ornate. A beautifully produced guide, still in its original envelope.
