South Shore Lumber Company - Part 2 by Michael Tylick, MMR L ast issue we constructed the floors and walls for our shed, but we will need a roof to keep our lumber dry – come to think of it, we will need some building supplies as well. The floors and walls may have taken some time to build, but the roof should go rather quickly. I suppose we will also have to figure out some way to attach our shed to the railroad – our site is either flimsy hardshell or open space. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, completing the shed may not be the beginning of the end, but rather the end of the beginning. But what's the hurry? Whatever would I do if I ever completed my model railroad? 12. The underside of the roof will be visible, so it is built in much the same way as the floor. Having started this article after construction had begun, I had neglected to photograph the template for the floor, which uses the time-honored model airplane "waxed paper over template with pins" technique. 13. The remaining rafters are glued to the roof. The ridge ends do not go all the way to the end; a styrene strip fence keeps them even. (Continued Page 4) Presentation: The BEDT - A Vest-Pocket Railroad You Can Model By Sam Berliner III 8 PM Friday, February 20, 2015, Cambridge School of Weston T he Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal (BEDT) was the last carrier in New York City to operate a fleet of steam locomotives in revenue service, switching over to diesels only on October 25, 1963! Although it had several smaller yards around NY harbor – all waterfront pocket yards with no land connections to major carriers, its main yard was on Brooklyn's East River shore just north of the Williamsburg Bridge. All traffic in and out of these pocket yards came and went on car floats (barges with tracks on their decks) handled by a vast fleet of tugboats. Although the focus of the presentation is on the big main yard at Kent Avenue, Sam will touch briefly on the other BEDT properties and tease you with looks at some of the many other tiny RR yards dotting the harbor. There was the CNJ Harlem Terminal where Boxcab #1000, about which you heard so much on September 16, 2011, labored for so long; and the Reading equivalent, also served by a Boxcab. Modeling in HO, N, and Z (1:220) will be covered as well.

South Shore LumberCompany - Part 2

Last issue we constructed the floorsand walls for our shed, but we willneed a roof to keep our lumber dry

– come to think of it, we will need somebuilding supplies as well. The floors andwalls may have taken some time to build,but the roof should go rather quickly. Isuppose we will also have to figure outsome way to attach our shed to the railroad– our site is either flimsy hardshell or openspace. The Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal (BEDT) was the last carrier in NewYork City to operate a fleet of steam locomotives in revenue service,switching over to diesels only on October 25, 1963! Although it had several

smaller yards around NY harbor – all waterfront pocket yards with no landconnections to major carriers, its main yard was on Brooklyn's East River shore justnorth of the Williamsburg Bridge. Those who volunteered thisyear where exceptional. We were a littleshorthanded this year, but those whovolunteered stepped-up and made thingsrun smoothly. On behalf of the Expocommittee and myself, I would like tothank you all sincerely for sparing yourvaluable time and helping us with ourshow. It is only with the help ofvolunteers like you that we have beenable to take on such a project. I hopethat you will continue to give yourvaluable support to our future programsand shows.

Although you may be reading thisin January, I'm writing thiscolumn on a crisp fall morning

in early November. Eveningtemperatures have fallen into the mid-30s and there is truly frost on thepumpkin. It's the kind of morning whererailroad men draw their jackets a littletighter and the coal tender sets out to topoff all the coal bins at every switch andcrossing shanty along the line. Winter iscoming and there's much work to dobefore the snow flies. I spent theweekend cutting my lawn short andremoving quite a few leaves.

Then, Dick Wenzel dropped by todeliver a donation of items for our HUBsale table. Thanks Dick, Louis Krue andall of you who've donated this year.Dick was also interested in seeing howmy caboose was coming along.Evidently some people do read mycolumns.

On Sunday, I fired up the Honda snowblower and put a new battery in the oldGravely tractor. It's an old model L builtover 55 years ago with a cast ironchassis and a 5 Hp gasoline engine. Mydad got it with a number of attachmentsto mow the lawn, plow and till thegarden along with a cultivator, too. Iinherited it when he decided to sell thehouse, and brought it to the Boston areawhere I paid to have an electric starteradded and purchased a plow attachment.It was without a doubt the best money Iever spent. Between those two pieces ofequipment I can handle the heavy wetsnow or the deep powder.

I wanted to get these fall chores out ofthe way so I can stay inside and do somemodeling when that arctic blast hits.However, I digress and you can see howone thing just leads to another aroundhere.

In my last few columns, I noted how mymodeling efforts had decidedly taken adetour. Well, this fall was generally nodifferent, except that after installing aLok Sound unit in one of my AlcoRS36s at a Palmer Diamonds clinic, Inaturally had to do a little detail upgradeto the Atlas Trainman unit. As a rule, Ilike to have my locomotives look as well

as they sound. Cal-Scale produces adetail kit (190-527) containing thegrabs, lift rings, coupler levers, MUhoses, etc. for the RS32s and 36s. Ibought a few in anticipation of just sucha need. Interestingly, the cast brass MUsets sport four hoses per set while thefew D&H Alco pictures, I found, displaysets of three on each side of the coupler.As the model itself contains the cast ondetail for the appropriate three hose sets,I used that and simply drilled out theholes where I wanted to separatelyinstall the mu hoses. The fuel tanks aresimilar to the RS3 units and will alsorequire reworking as I noted in myearlier column.

Then the next detour arose. I noticedthat several new books had come out onthe D&H, particularly on the south endbetween Schenectady and Binghamton,and which might contain additionalphotos of the RS -3s, 11s and 36s in thepost-WWII to mid-sixties period I like

to model. Thus, I've spent some timetracking down the authors andinformation needed to update my D&Hlibrary. I don't believe any seriousmodeler can have too many referencebooks on their favorite road especiallywhen it comes to placement of thoselittle characteristic details. I'm lookingforward to perusing those resourcesduring the winter months and before mynext locomotive project. That caboose Italked about earlier is still on my workbench, but I did manage to spend anhour on it! Good thing, because most ofmy weekends are now spent collectingdonations for our sales tables.

My friends like to tease me that myfondness for all things D&H ismisplaced, since it is a railroad thatcomes from, and goes to, nowhere.While it is true the anthracite coalbusiness has diminished in the Scrantonarea, the many paper mills inTiconderoga are gone and there are nomore steel mills or ore operations alongthe shores of Lake Champlain, it all didexist to varying degrees during theperiod that I model.

In that spirit, I started to explore internetsites dealing with the history of ironmining and steel making in theAdirondacks. The History of theChateaugay Ore and Iron Company ascompiled by J.R. Linney may be foundonline at: http://bigelowsociety.com/history/mine/hisore1.htm. It is takenfrom an inspection report to the D&HBoard of Directors in the mid-30s.During the 1880s nearly 23% of the Iron

14. Roofing paper. Followingsuggestions from Art Fahie of Bar MillsModels, I over-sprayed green constructionpaper (shown underneath) with mists ofgrey, black, white, and red primer. Thespray cans from Wal*Mart areinexpensive and work well for this,especially when the cans are used and lesspaint comes out. Holding the spray canvertically and far away helps give thesplatter effect that gives the paper atextured look. The paper will be cut intostrips. Mine are a scale 27" wide butprototype roofing paper seems to come inseveral different widths.

15. The roofing paper strips are appliedrandomly to the roof.

16. The front roof is glued to the wall.Again departing from prototypeconstruction, the roof was attached to theouter wall and ridgepole. The horizontaltruss member is then added to bring theunsupported end of the roof into correctalignment.

17. Subsequent truss horizontals are thenglued in place. I am uncertain how manywould be necessary, but a truss at everyother rafter seemed sufficient.

18. The rear roof is glued in place thesame as the front.

19. The first rear diagonal aligns the roof.The rest are then added. Wood shims fillthe open space at the ridge pole. A strip ofroofing paper will be scored, folded, andglued across the ridge.

20. and 21. A side view and overall viewof the completed trusses.

23. The completed shed from the trackside. This will not be seen from the layoutedge but may show up in photographs.

24. There are faster ways to build lumberpiles, but since these are quite short (about1" long), board-by-board seemed theeasiest. We are looking at the visible(interior) side. The new lumber has onlya very, very thin umber wash applied so itwill appear much lighter than the shed.Paint is often applied to the lumber ends toretard moisture; I used felt tip pens toreplicate this. The pipes are short bits ofEvergreen tube and rod.

25. The lumber piles are in place; noticeone bay has only a few boards left.Chocks are placed on the ends of the pipepiles to prevent rolling.

26. I was not planning to include a secondfloor railing at first, but I later decided thewalkway was too dangerous even forpre-OSHA days. Since I did not plan toadd the railing, the posts were attached tothe end of the joists. This would notprovide a very strong joint in real life, butit is on the side away from the viewer. Tohelp alignment, the two furthest posts areattached and aligned by eye. The upperrail will align the remainder of the postsand the other rail. Rather than attemptingto cut the rail to the correct length, it iseasier to make it oversize and trim it laterwith a sprue cutting tool or a nail clipper.

27. The ladder is made over a paper and

waxed paper template. The rungs are cutoversized and trimmed when dry. Gluingalternate rungs helps keep my clumsyfingers out of the way. Then theremainder will be added.

28. The ladder and railing are complete.Although these were an afterthought, itwas probably best to add them last sincethe delicate assemblies would have beendamaged during construction.

29. Careful observers will notice that thelighting was added much earlier, but thephotographs of this step were fuzzy.Miniatronics HO scale 12-volt lamps andshades were used. Miniature LEDlighting was considered, but seemed likemore work than necessary. The wires areeasily hidden in the hollow beams.Provision could have been made forhollow posts, but this being the backside,surface mounting was simple andstraightforward. I run the 12-volt lampsfrom a six-volt power supply. The dimglow is more realistic and the life of thelamp is extended as much as four hundredtimes. Simple and low-tech is best for me.

30. Since the structure is at the layoutedge, I had to install the front fascia boardand finish the grading before "planting"the lumber shed. I was forced to do a jobI had been putting off.

31. Cast stones (used for walls) wereplaced under the sill to act as footings.Dark cinders show this is just a dirty crawlspace below the structure.

32. The completed shed is installed on thelayout. It is held in place at the track edgeand on the stone footings. Not a verystrong assembly for a foreground modelwhich will take some abuse, but the mainstructure should stabilize it. Chances arethe shed will have to be realigned to fit thesecond phase anyway.

It's time to dig out Eric Sloane's “An Ageof Barns” and design a larger structure toattach the shed to. See you again when Iget more of the South Shore LumberCompany completed.

First, allow me to thank you for electingme to represent all of you from acrossthe Division on the BOD three yearsago. As a teacher for 35 years, I stillbelieve in creating life long learners.

I have been a member of the HUB for 29years, Membership Chairman for thepast four years and served as the N.E.Diamonds Volunteer Chairman.Recently, when asked by our Presidentif I could organize a raffle on shortnotice for the N.E. Diamondsconvention, I accepted it as a challenge,not as a problem. The raffle was asuccess.

It is with this level of commitment that Ipledge to keep the HUB Division amongthe best divisions in the NMRA. Ourmembership is by far our greatest asset.

I'm a Narrow-Gauge Garden Railroadbeginner and, although I do thingsdifferently, I have drawn on the manyskills of our talented members. It is whatwe have in common that unites us andour differences that strengthen us. Ienjoy and actively participate in all ofthe HUB's activities: Rail Fun, TheExpo, Spring Training, Rail FanExcursions, Modular Displays, and myfavorite, the modular setup at Children'sHospital.

Please vote for me so I can continue towork for you.

David “Shack” Haralambou

I am David "Shack" Haralambou and Iwould love to represent you on the HUBDivision Board of Directors.

For the past three years, I have served asthe Module Superintendent for theorganization. My tenure is complete andI am now ready to serve on the Board asa member. I'm a very active HUBmember, attending most, if not all,Railfun, module and other group events.

I first became involved with the hobbyin the 1970's, with a train around the

Like many HUB members, I started thehobby with a Lionel set. My cousin,Gerry Covino, renewed my train fetish,where I was transformed from playingwith kid's toys to playing with grown-uptoys! With a strong artistic background,I became intrigued with craftsmanmodeling and scenery. I have done aclinic on Geodesic Foam Scenery andrecently created a YouTube video of myconstruction techniques. I received anNMRA award for my Wolcott MeatCompany. I also have scratch-builtmodel buildings for the HarwichHistorical Society at the BrooksAcademy Museum. I am an activemember of both the HUB Division andthe Nauset Model Railroad Club.

I serve at the Admissions table at theMarlboro show, and recently I enjoyedfund-raising at the regional convention.I retired from CSW (where I secured thesite for our RAILFUN meetings) andlive on Cape Cod with my lovely wifeMary, also an NMRA member andmodule builder.

My goal is to one day be a Master ModelRailroader. I'd like to continue on thisvoyage and share, as well as learn, fromour HUB Group. I believe I can bringvalued ideas to the board and would lovethe opportunity to once again be part ofa non-profit board of directors.

BOD CandidatesJames VanBokkelen

I grew up in Boston and Newburyport,Massachusetts, and took an earlyinterest in trains, trolleys and history. Istarted with O-gauge tinplate, butswitched to HO in 1968 because Iwanted more accurate models of what Isaw and rode. I'm still playing withtrains, working on my home layout andwith the HUB Modular Group.

I attended MIT and just retired from theensuing 34-year career in the computerindustry as a programmer, manager,salesman, executive and entrepreneur.I've served one term on the HUB Boardand as Vice President since March 2014.I've also been on other commercial andnon-profit boards. I served as Selectmanfor nine years, and as a School Boardmember for six. Presently I'm PlanningBoard chairman and a member of theRockingham Planning Commission.

I've been a life member of the HubDivision for more than 20 years, andhave many friends among our members.If re-elected, I'll continue to look fornew and more effective ways to serveour members and promote our activitiesand the hobby in general.

A valid e-mail Ballot must contain theHUB member's Name andMembership Number in the E-mailSubject Line. All votes must beplaced in the body of the E-mail.Place ONLY the names of theCandidates for whom the member iscasting votes. The three names can bethe candidate names included on theballot or write-in candidates. Write-incandidates must be members in GoodStanding of the NMRA HUB Division.

3. PROXY:

A. The Letter of Proxy MUSTcontain the HUB member's Name,Membership Number, and handwritten Signature. The Letter ofProxy must also declare the name ofthe HUB member acting as proxy.

B. The HUB member acting as proxywill present the Letter of Proxy at theAnnual Meeting to obtain the eligiblemember's ballot for voting purposes.

METHODS OF VOTING

The HUB Division elections will be held on April 12, 2015 at the Holiday Inn in Taunton, MA, immediatelyfollowing Spring TRAINing, and before the banquet.

ore output of the U.S. came fromClinton and Essex counties. Ore washauled to forges located on the SaranacRiver west of what is now known asPlattsburg.

A second major area for mining iron orewas to the south in the Mineville /Moriah regions located up in thehillsides, due west of Port Henry.Several blast furnaces were constructedat Cedar Point on the shores of LakeChamplain to process the ore from theWitherbee - Sherman and Companymining operations. This industryflourished from 1829 to 1971. In fact,Port Henry was the largest pre-warproducer of iron ore in the country.High-grade ore was mined from deeptunnels in the villages of Mineville andWitherbee. The furnaces are now goneand a museum now resides in thecarriage house of the Witherbee-Sherman Headquarters at Port Henry.(see: http://www.lakechamplainregion.com/recreation/heritage/iron-center-museum.)

My favorite is, of course, the McIntyreMine located in the upper reaches of theHudson near Newcomb. (see:http://www.adirondack-park.net/history/mcintyre.mine.html). There, along theUpper works road, stands a 60-ft. tallstone blast furnace built in the middle of

the 19th century after David Hendersonlocated the site. Henderson diedprematurely in a hunting accident whilescouting out the local rivers and streamsfor water power. An impurity in the orecaused the mines to close in 1857 andthe closure lasted nearly three quartersof a century until National Lead tookover. The US government then spent$50 million to resurrect the operationsduring WWII, including the building ofa railroad when the impurity wasdiscovered to be the even more preciousTitanium ore. For more than a decadeafter the war, several thousand tons weremined every day, until all the minesclosed and operations ended in 1982.Today, there is an earnest effort toresume harvesting of those mine tailingsfor improving aggregate strength inroads and for other manufacturingprocesses. The line between NorthCreek and Tahawus is undergoing arestoration by the "Saratoga and NorthCreek," a railroad owned by Ed Ellis'sIowa Pacific Holding. Wow, that was amouthfull even for me.

Hope you got that cord of firewood laidin. Farmer's Almanac predicts a cold,snowy winter. By the time you read thisthe NEMTE will be over and Springfieldwill be right around the corner. Hope tohear and see some of your modelingefforts soon.

You helpedus raise more than $4200, which, is thelargest total since we've begun thisactivity. I would also like to thank allthose volunteers who assisted me withthe set-up and sales from our tables. Icouldn't have done it alone.

The Worcester ModelRailroaders Show and Open

House

A Prototype for Everything?HUB PR Director Tim Garner took thispicture at the Toronto Railway Museum onOctober 1, 2014. It shows a crossingbetween the museum’s miniature railroadand a standard gauge display track. Fourremovable pieces fill the standard gaugeflangeways to prevent the miniature trainsfrom derailing. “I’ve seen pictures of 3’-gauge and 2’-gauge crossings with standardgauge track, but this is a new one on me,”said Tim. The museum is in downtownToronto across the street from the RogersCenter where the Toronto Blue Jays play.

From the ModularSuperintendent's Desk -Wheels and Wheel Sets

Over the past year, culminatingwith the HUB Division'sModular Railway participation

in the NMRA National Train Show inCleveland, the HUB Division hasinstalled signals on our modular layout.In order to make the signals workprototypically, detection was installedon a number of modules. To make thedetection work, cars need at least oneresistor axle per car. Locomotivesalready act like big resistors.

Gerry Covino has found a supplier whosells axles with the resistor installed.We had done some of these in-house.While the price of $2.00 per wheelset isreally low, the price of the pen with thespecial magnetic ink had risen quitesharply over the last two years. To makeit economically feasible we would needto make up 50+ at one time.

Help WantedThe HUB Division is looking for reliefdrivers to bring the HUB Trailers toevents and return them to storage.

Drivers must have vehicle capable oftowing HUB's 14' trailers. Mileagecompensation will be available.
