Options Process The Year 8 and 9 options processes are underway with launch assemblies and our Options Evening on Wednesday 9th March. Year 9 students have already had their interviews to discuss their choices and the Year 8 interviews start next week and will run until Thursday 24th March.

The Year 8 Options Process The Year 8 into 9 options process is the start of an important and exciting phase in your education. For the first time in their school lives, students will be able to personalise parts of their curriculum by making individual choices from a range of options subjects. Over the next few weeks, students will receive a lot of advice and guidance to help them make informed decisions; these decisions will not only shape their Year 9 curriculum at Ilkley Grammar School, but will also help to support the decision making process when they select their final GCSE options next year.

There’s a saying: ‘If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else’. We want students to choose courses which will extend their knowledge and skills, courses they will find interesting and challenging whilst offering you real opportunities for success. They should support your progression to GCSE and help meet their career needs and aspirations at Post 16 and beyond. Our Year 9 curriculum is ambitious, aspirational and is designed to provide opportunities for all students to achieve.

Deadline for the return of Year 8 Options Forms: Wednesday 13th April 2016

The Year 9 Options Process Last year, students were given the opportunity to personalise part of their Year 9 curriculum in line with their interests, abilities and aspirations. This curriculum flexibility was created to help further develop their knowledge and skills in subjects which they were considering for GCSE, allowing specialisation alongside the chance to experience new subjects which were previously only available in Years 10 and 11. Consequently, their experiences this year should help to inform some of their decisions as they start another important and exciting phase in their education: The Key Stage 4 options process. Students have already received lots of advice and guidance to help them make appropriate choices from a range of option subjects; these decisions will not only shape their time at Ilkley Grammar School, but they will also affect their future lives.

Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is ambitious, aspirational and is designed to provide opportunities for all students to achieve. In order to ensure breadth and balance, all students must follow a core curriculum of English Language, English Literature, mathematics and Combined Science (covering physics, chemistry and biology) which leads to 5 GCSEs. Students must also continue to study PE as part of promoting an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as a programme of Citizenship/RE to ensure spiritual, moral and cultural development.

Deadline for the return of Year 9 Options Forms: Wednesday 16th March 2016

National Careers Week is here…

this year is all about future jobs! Happy National Careers Week! It is often said that students entering secondary education now will have jobs that may not have even been invented or created yet. Hold on to that thought. The future is about personal skills and their portability and this is reason Careers week (#NCW2016 ) is dedicated to Future Jobs. Have a look at the National Careers Week digital magazine for more news and advice.

Wheelchair Basketball Wheelchair basketball is one of the largest Paralympic sports, with its roots going back to the late 40s. Although initially a rehabilitation and recreational activity for spinal cord injured patients, it quickly developed into a competitive sport and today, the National Wheelchair Basketball League consists of sixty five teams playing in 9 divisions.

Wheelchair basketball embraces a wide range of disabilities including paraplegics, spina bifida, amputees, brittle bones, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Able bodied players are eligible to play in divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4, junior league and women's league.

Ben Smithson (10JDA) plays wheelchair basketball and started his basketball career training with the Leeds Spiders in January 2008 aged just 7 years old. He played his first competitive tournament two years later aged 9 and a year later he got his own sports wheelchair. In October 2012, Ben was selected to play for Yorkshire U15s at Stoke Mandeville. This was an amazing experience for him, and the team, who came away with a bronze medal. In 2015, Ben was again selected to play for the Yorkshire U15s, this time in Worcester, and again the team came away with a bronze medal. In September 2015, Ben changed teams and now plays for Wakefield Whirlwinds. The newly formed team had a great season and played their first set of tournaments together. Ben is hoping to again play for Yorkshire in August 2016. Last week, representatives from Great Britain’s Wheelchair Basketball Association came into school to deliver wheel chair basketball sessions to Ben’s Year 10 core PE class.

The Year 10 class were taught the basic skills of wheelchair basketball and were also given a quick rundown on how to control a wheelchair. It was great fun with the boys learning some key skills in this exciting sport.

Basic Skills of Wheelchair Basketball The boys were taught the correct way of performing shooting, passing, catching, etc. in a wheelchair, with the coach reinforcing that to be a successful player, one of the main aims must be to perform these skills consistently and well. The initial training drills included wheelchair tig, where Mr Goodbold was caught easily! The boys then went on to practise their speed and agility in games of bulldog. There was plenty of time to get used to the wheelchairs before the basketballs were introduced into the lesson, which gave the class time to hone their skills...although stopping was proving quite difficult for some of them!

Chair Control It was explained to the students that in defence wheelchair basketball players must keep their chair touching their attacker and the footplate must be two or three inches in front of the attacker so that they cannot push past.

Control of the chair is key and students were shown how to watch the position of their opponents hands on their wheels (they will tell you what direction they will attempt to go in next). Students were told the key to becoming the master of their chair - sit in it and remain on top of it! For defence and attack skills the boys were encouraged to practise 'one on one' and told to get used to moving, or threatening to move, immediately after they had passed the ball. Attacking manoeuvres were also covered in the session, faking one way, then moving the other.

Basketball is a game of brains not brawn and also a team game. The Year 10 boys were encouraged to call for help, reminding them that their other players, the bench and the coach were all in it together. The coaching session was a great opportunity to appreciate the skills required for this exciting sport...and for the boys to see one of their classmates in action!

Record Score for U13 Cricket Team Congratulations to our U13 cricketers who achieved an all-time record score in the U13 indoor cricket county semi-finals finals at St Bede’s, Bradford. The eight-a-side, eight over format requires batters to retire on fifteen in order to allow as many players as possible experience in the middle. Against their first opponents, Wakefield, Ilkley openers Max Rogers and James Patchett laid the foundations expertly before duly giving way to Arthur Turner, Josh Hall and Isaac Luffman who all continued to score heavily. Finally, Will Hughes, Tom Hills and Rhys Samuels raised Ilkley’s total to a staggering 188 for 2 in 8 overs at a rate of 23.5 runs per over. This proved overwhelming as Ilkley’s bowlers and fielders restricted the Wakefield representatives to 47 for 6. Ilkley’s next task was take on hosts, St Bede’s, and they quickly got into their stride to produce another impressive 134 for 2 before bowling out the Bradford school for 77. The boys now progress to their third consecutive county finals at Headingley on March 18th in very confident mood. The successful squad was: Max Rogers (8ASH); James Patchett (8MEH); Arthur Turner (8MH); Josh Hall (8ASH); Isaac Luffman (8MEH); Will Hughes (8MEH); Tom Hills (8MEH); Harry Strachan (8LNR) and Rhys Samuels (8LNR).

Bravo to Alexander Wright (11JLF) who recently starred in Guiseley Amateur Operatic Society's (GAOS) production of 'Footloose'. It was Alexander's first senior show with the society as he only had his 16th birthday two weeks before the start of the show. In recognition of his performance in the twin roles of Travis and Jetter he was presented with the David Baxter Rosebowl as the most promising newcomer to the society by GAOS Chairman Chris Ingram.

Congratulations to our synchronised swimming instructor, Mrs Gooch, who’s commitment to sport has been recognised in the Leeds Sports’ Awards. Mrs Gooch picked up her award, ‘Outstanding Service to Sport’, at the presentation ceremony on Thursday 3rd

March at the New Dock Hall, Clarence Dock, in Leeds.

The event saw VIP guests and sporting heroes, city councillors and sporting partners from across the city come together with a host of individuals involved in sport at every level to truly celebrate Leeds’ sporting achievements. The Leeds Sports’ Awards has a proven record of being one of the greatest sporting events in the city's calendar and we are delighted and proud to hear that one of your coaches was an awardee!

Well done and good luck to gymnasts Ella Shuttleworth (8AMB) and Hayley Brooks (11JI) who have qualified to represent Yorkshire at the British Sports Acrobatics in May. The girls displayed their impressive routine on Tuesday to their fellow PE classmates...good luck girls!

Intermediate Maths Challenge An excellent achievement by Emmot Finch (9DSF) in this year's Intermediate Maths Challenge saw him qualify for the Olympiad stage of the competition. Qualification into the Olympiad round means that Emmot was one of the best 500 high scorers in the UK this year! Well done Emmot. Ten of our other students qualified for the interestingly named ‘Kangaroo’ round - the name sounds strange, but recognises the fact that the organisation was inspired by the Australian Mathematics Trust. They are: Charlie Franks (11HGW); Jamie Spiller (10KL), Nathan Foster (10MWC), Ellie Cooper (10JDA); Imogen Brodaty (10LV); Krizzler Cree (9SL); Amelia Milner (9PDH); James Holmes (9DSF); Finlay Tunney (9LG) and Nathaniel Richardson (9PB). Well done to all our outstanding mathematicians. All this good news is a great way for us to mark Pi Day which, don't forget, is of course March 14th!

Congratulations to our U13 netball teams who took part in the Bradford District Schools’ U13 Netball tournament at Bradford Grammar School on Monday evening. The girls performed really well and the B team finished 4th after just beating our A team in the last match, meaning the B team finished in 5th.

Well done to: Stef Rose (8LNR); Lily Dobson (8LNR); Libby Ives (8RRG); Charlie Murray (8MEH); Ella Hammond (8ELC); Ella Shuttleworth (8AMB); Erin Turner (8RRG); Emily Mayo (8MEH); Milly Parker (8LNR); Hannah Corbett (8MEH); Abby Lane (8ASH); Jess Wells (8MEH); Ide Gale-Coleman (8AMD); Bernadette Raven (8PO); Alice Kealey (8ASH); Ella Hyde (8AMD); Cerys Richards (8MEH); Emma Whitaker-Pitts (8MH); Louise Steer (8ELC) and Libby Madden (8MEH).

Alcohol Community Action Partnership (CAP) We mentioned a few weeks ago, in Headline, our involvement in the Alcohol Community Action Partnership. Andy Calvert (Assistant Headteacher) has attended the initial CAP meeting and we have a Parent Information Evening planned, covering Drugs and Alcohol with our CAP partners, on Wednesday 23rd March, 6.30pm—8pm. Please put this date in your diary, everyone is welcome to attend.

CAP activity is determined locally but will generally encourage and include a focus on education, enforcement, public perception, communication, diversionary activity and evaluation. Here is a quick guide to how the CAP schemes operate.

Education Education is key to raising awareness about the law relating to young people and alcohol and the impact of underage alcohol consumption on individuals and society. CAP encourages education of young people, adults and retailers.

Enforcement An essential part of CAP involves enforcement of the laws relating to young people and alcohol including purchase of alcohol by under 18s, sale to under 18s, drinking by under 18s in public places and proxy or agent purchase. Compliance testing is an integral part of any CAP and usually takes place several times in the life of a CAP to provide benchmarking activity and monitor the success, or otherwise, of retailer training.

Public Perception It is important that where schemes are successful in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in a designated area, local people feel safer as a result. Surveys of local people carried out prior to and after the pilot phase are a good way to gauge any changes in public opinion.

Communication CAP has developed a range of materials which can be adapted as required to suit the needs of local schemes. Schemes are encouraged to make use of these communication tools and to make use also of local radio, local press, social networking media, residents’ meetings etc - to try and ensure that the community understands CAP and is fully engaged and involved.

Diversionary Activity Provision of a range of activities for young people is positively encouraged to ensure that young people have fun, healthy things to do that do not involve alcohol. Diversionary activities have included provision of sports using existing leisure and sports facilities, using youth clubs or “Youth buses” and local cafes to provide opportunities for young people to drop in and meet in a supervised, safe environment.

Evaluation Evaluation is a mandatory part of each CAP scheme. CAP encourages use of the evaluation "toolkit" developed by London Met University which is available in a restricted area of the website (Login area) for registered CAP schemes and encourages collection of data on key indicators. Examples of evaluated data includes local crime and anti-social behaviour statistics, levels of alcohol-related litter, hotspot drinking areas, complaints and incidents reported to partner agencies, ambulance pick-ups for underage alcohol related incidents, hospital admission for under 18s and public perception surveys. The measurement of progress throughout the pilot allows the management team to monitor effectiveness of the action plan activities, and provides firm data for final evaluation.

Shaping the Future of Education Last week saw the leading education exhibition and conference in the Middle East, GESS. Hosted at the Work Trade Centre in Dubai, the conference brought together over 10,000 educational professionals from 45 countries. The purpose: to help teachers, educators and academics to develop their skills and gain insight from international experts to develop their practical teaching methods. Ilkley Grammar School was selected as a lead school to present within the digital education strand. Tuesday saw Miss Brides, Mr Calvert and a group of KS3 and KS5 students present our Computing curriculum to delegates at the conference. Students spoke articulately about their learning and the programming concepts they had mastered, throughout their schooling. KS3 students demonstrated their coding skills using: Touch Develop for the BBC Micro:bit; Scratch to create retro games; HTML and CSS to create websites and Javascript to mock the effect of a computer virus. The girls from our KS3 coding club did an excellent job of showing their sophisticated joke machines, coded with Python and the Tkinter module to create a graphical user interface. Our KS5 developers, showed off the apps created using X-Code and Apple’s Swift language, whilst they tested the apps’ functionality on their iPads.

Wednesday saw us delivering again during the ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ session. Year 7 students explored the use of Makey Makey boards to act as computer inputs that would interact with their Scratch coded, space invaders game. This demonstrated their creativity to use themselves, fruit and graphite to conduct electricity and use a range of objects to act as a joypad or keyboard.

Over to our Year 8’s on Thursday who showed the use of technology in Science during the ‘Creativity Projects’ session. Students have been using StopMotion and Google Classroom to demonstrate their understanding of chemical titrations and modelling electric current.

This was a fantastic team effort from all staff and students involved. We were proud to show the world what we can achieve together and the difference technology can make to our progress!

Our Year 7 and 8 netballers were lucky enough to be coached by 2 Yorkshire Jets players Lydia Walker and Jess Shaw this week. The Yorkshire Jets are one of eight UK netball teams who play in the Vitality Netball Superleague. Comprising players from across Yorkshire and the Humber, the squad includes athletes who have been selected for England U17, U19, U21 and Senior squads. The Jets run an Athlete Development Programme, which launched last year, to identify, nurture and develop the next generation of players with the potential to grow into Superleague and England stars of the future.

After trials in the Autumn involving hundreds of girls from across the region, around 75 girls were selected for the Junior programme, for ages 11 to 13, and the Youth programme, for ages 14 to 19. The Programme sits alongside the England Netball pathway run by Yorkshire Netball and the Counties...maybe some of our netballers had their eye on a slot for next season?
