The first to earn the distinc- tion was lot 282 , a filly by Pivotal (GB), who was purchased by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum=s racing manager Angus Gold. Out of listed win- ner Briolette (GB) (Sadler=s Wells), a half-sister to champion Pilsudski (Ire) (Polish Precedent), she was sold from David and Diane Nagle=s Barronstown Stud. Michael Goodbody, acting for a new client, was underbidder to Gold on the filly. AShe comes from a very good stud, and is a lovely big scopey filly whose family keeps on producing,@ explained Gold. ASheikh Hamdan was very keen on her, and we=ll decide on a trainer once the sales are finished.@ Shortly after, a full-brother to 2006 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Nightime (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), bred by Dermot Weld=s mother Gita and consigned through the Castlebridge Consignment, realized a 650,000gns final bid. Owner Sir Robert Ogden had to outbid, first the BBA Ireland=s Eamonn Reilly, and finally John Magnier to get the Galileo colt. AWe have a shortlist of 12-14 horses each day, and then find that some are buyable and some not,@ said Ogden=s racing manager Barry Simpson. AWe are not looking for any particular type of horse and have seen colts and fillies. We just want racehorses, and this fellow looks like he could be the real deal.@ According to Simpson, a decision as to a trainer has still to be decided. AWe=ve made no plan about where he=ll go into training, we=ll let the dust settle once we=ve seen what we=ve finished up with after the sale, and then Sir Robert will make his deci- sions," said Simpson. Cont. p2 GOLDIKOVA GETS GREEN LIGHT Freddy Head yesterday confirmed Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) on course for a return to Santa Anita to de- fend her GI Breeders= Cup Mile crown. Following her reversal when only third in Saturday=s G1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp, the Wertheimer homebred was reported to have suffered no ill-effects by her conditioner. Head told PA Sport, AShe is fine and has come out of the race well. We have checked her over and noth- ing is wrong--she is fine. It was a bad race, as she was drawn out wide and had to use a lot of energy to get to the front. She was pushed wide at one point, and Peslier had to choose whether to go on or pull her back. Lot 315, a Montjeu (Ire) colt who is the final foal outof the great mare Colorspin (Fr) (High Top {Ire}), topped

Coolmore=s spendingyesterday when sell-ing to John Magnierfor 550,000gns.Charlie Gordon- Watson was the un-derbidder on the colt, who was offered fromthe Meon Valley Studconsignment. Repre-senting Sheikh Mo-hammed yesterdaywas John Ferguson, who bought a dozen

lots for for the operation for a gross of 12,410,000gns.The pick of them was another Meon Valley Stud offer-ing, lot 257, a filly by Dubawi (Ire) out of Bella Lambada(GB) (Lammtarra). Ferguson paid 460,000gns for thefilly, for whom Luke Lillingston--standing with ownerOlivia Hoare--was the underbidder. ADubawi=s made afantastic start with the likes of Poet=s Voice (GB) andSand Vixen (GB), and we=re excited by him,@ explainedFerguson. ABut, on top of that, this was a beautifulathletic filly from one of the best families in the book.We thought she=d be one of the highlights of theweek.@ Michael Goodbody collected three lots on the after-noon, including lot 269, a Pivotal (GB) half-brother toFantasia (GB). Secured for 450,000gns, the bay--out ofBlue Symphony (GB) (Darshaan {GB})--will race forowner Thomas Barr. AHe just ticked the boxes on every-thing,@ said Goodbody. AHe was a great mover, was an

athletic horse with agreat pedigree, and isout of a young mare whohas already producedsome good horses. I=mnot sure who will trainhim.@ Acting on behalf ofDavid and PatriciaThompson=s CheveleyPark Stud, managing di-rector Chris Richardsonbought four fillies, in-cluding lot 427, a daugh-ter of Ballyhane Studstallion Captain Rio (GB)

(Pivotal). Secured for 400,000gns, the filly--who wasproduced on a cover of just i6,000 in 2007--is ahalf-sister to G1 Phoenix S. winner Alfred Nobel (Ire)(Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The filly, from the family of NewApproach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), was offered from breederSeamus Burns= Lodge Park Stud. Richardson saw offNew Approach=s trainer Jim Bolger for the filly.

AWe are trying to look to the future with ourbroodmare band and were keen to get into a familysuch as that," said Richardson. AAlfred Nobel is veryuseful, and won his race on his side in the sales race atthe weekend. We=ve also got the link with Pivotalthrough his son Captain Rio, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomp-son will decide this evening on a trainer.@ At the conclusion of Wednesday second session, theaverage price of 114,030gns was three percent shortof last year=s figure, while the median of 75,000gnswas down by nine percent from 2008. Yesterday=sgross turnover of 19,271,000gns rose by 12 percent, and the 82-percent clearance rate was identical to lastyear. For complete results, visit www.tattersalls.com.

AThe figures are very similar to last year and it feelslike 12 months ago. There has been a major readjust-ment, and breeders have been very realistic with theirreserves, because in order for the wheel to turn, theyknow they need to sell so that they can in turn pay fornominations and keep the whole thing going. With theTattersalls Millions races, everybody should be buyinghere this week--it is the best incentive that has everbeen offered at a sale.@ --John Ferguson

AThis a very special filly," said Wood, whose husbandChris works in the medical research industry. ABuyingsomething like her is always in the back of your mindas you go around the sale and, although that's obvi-ously a lot of money I thought she might have madeeven more--we were shouting for the auctioneer tobring his hammer down!@ Wood, who has owned horseswith Hannon for 10 years, currently has 22 horses intraining. AWe don't normally look at these type ofhorses very often--or in fact ever,@ explained thetrainer's son, Richard Jr. AWe've stepped it up with thisfilly and she is totally unique. I didn't think we wouldget her--she represents an awful lot of value."Wood added, AShe's a one off, there's no other one likeher and I wanted to be with her all of the way. We'llhave a good look at her pedigree and try to come upwith a special name for her. And, although we decidedafter our Gilded (Ire) (Redback {GB}) won the G2 QueenMary S. that we'd just race horses and wouldn't breed,at the same time maybe we will now review thatagain.@

Sweet Sounds at Tattersalls... Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani and his wife Sarawere among the successful sellers at Tattersalls yester-day, selling a well-connected Pivotal (GB) colt for

450,000gns to MichaelGoodbody, acting for Scot-tish owner Thomas Barr.AWe're thrilled with theprice,@ said Sara Cumani, who commended the jobdone by consignor HighclereStud. AHighclere are veryprofessional at doing thatand they have done a fan-tastic job with him." TheMarch-born youngster wasbred locally at the Cumanis=Fittocks Stud and offeredthrough Lady Carolyn andJohn Warren's operation. A

half-brother to this season's G1 Poule d'Essai desPouliches third Fantasia (GB) (Sadler's Wells), the baycaught the eye of several other buyers, including agentSuzanne Roberts and underbidder John Ferguson. SaraCumani admitted that it was with mixed emotions thatthey had decided to send the colt to the sale. AHavingsold Fantasia [to George Strawbridge while in training]well, we were originally not going to sell anything outof the mare, Blue Symphony (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), wewere going to retain everything we bred ourselves,@said Sara Cumani. ABut from a financial point of view, you just can't hold on to everything when you look atthe nomination costs.@

Blue Symphony, a winning daughter of the swift BlueDuster (Danzig), was acquired as a four-year-old for250,000gns at Tattersalls December. In foal to CapeCross (Ire) at the time, the resulting filly-- Blue Rhap-sody (GB)--sold as a juvenile at Tattersalls Autumn for60,000gns. Her 2006 filly by Sadler=s Wells, Fantasia, carried Ronchalon=s colors to victory in the G3 PrestigeS. and was runner-up to Rainbow View (Dynaformer) inthe G1 Fillies Mile last fall before being sold privately toGeorge Strawbridge. AWe originally bought the marewith Charlie Gordon-Watson for an owner, but heneeded to sell,@ explained Sara Cumani. AWe liked her, because we had a lot of luck with Puce (GB), who is byDarshaan (GB), and--like her--this mare is tiny and veryPuce-like.@ The mare--one of 14 owned by FittocksStud--has a Nayef colt foal this year and is in foal toGalileo (Ire). ABecause the mare is so small, she hasbeen to big stallions like Nayef and Pivotal to try andproduce something with a bit of size,@ added Cumani.AWe sold her filly Pink Symphony (GB) (Montjeu {Ire})last year [for 400,000gns], but that was before Fanta-sia had achieved what she had, and if we'd known thatwe'd have probably tried to keep her. I hope we getanother filly out of the mare.@

De-Voute Following at Tattersalls... Consignor Ted Voute has plenty to thank WilliamHaggas for this season with his October Book 1 con-

signment containinghalf-siblings to that trainer'stwo Group 1 winners, Aqlaam(GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) andKing's Apostle (Ire) (King'sBest). For added value, bothyearlings are by hot sire CapeCross (Ire), responsible forlast weekend=s Arc winnerSea The Stars (Ire). Lot 275,out of the unraced RainbowQuest mare Bourbonella (GB),was knocked down toShadwell Estate Company for

300,000gns. The Feb. 22 foal was offered by VouteSales, acting on behalf of the filly's breeders David andDawn Hearson of Granham Farm. Previously, Voutealso sold Aqlaam to Shadwell as a foal for 260,000gnsand Bourbonella's half-siblings Classic Punch (Ire) (Mo-zart {Ire}), Grand Bahama (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}) andWadmaan (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), who fetched800,000gns as a yearling. AWe know how fortunate weare to have sold this filly so well,@ said David Hearson, who bought Bourbonella as a yearling. AThere are a lotof nice horses at the sales that aren't making money. We're also lucky to have had such support fromShadwell.@ Aqlaam's full-brother--by Oasis Dream (GB)--now two, fetched i280,000 at last year's ArqanaAugust sale and Bourbonella is now back in foal to thatsire with a colt by his sire Green Desert at foot. ATheysaw Aqlaam as a foal and loved him,@ said Voute. AHewas the top-priced Oasis Dream at the foal sales.Aqlaam was a beautiful foal and the mare is becoming areal blue hen." Giving the nod to Haggas, Voute con-ceded that the operations major catalogue updates haveall come from the Haggass yard this year. Voute=s final-day draft includes King's Apostle's half-brother and afull-brother to the dual G1 Nunthorpe S. winnerBorderlescott (GB) (Compton Place {GB}).

The Hearsons have eight mares at their 80-acre farmin Marlborough, several of which are owned in partner-ship with David's twin brother, Paul. The brothers alsohave a homebred two-year-old Cape Cross colt in train-ing with Haggas, and will be sending a Motivator (GB)(Montjeu {GB}) yearling to Harry Dunlop. ABourbonella iscertainly our star mare at the moment, but my intentionis for her to be one of several stars," said Hearson. AI'vehad a lifelong interest in racing, but we've only beeninvolved in the industry for 10 years. We have a fantas-tic girl, Leila Nairne, running the stud for us. She's verycompetent and she tells us what to do. My wife workswith her, and I do a bit of tractor work."

Meon Valley Broodmare Goes Out With a Bang... A Montjeu (Ire) half-brother to three Group 1 winnersfrom one of the most celebrated families in thestudbook is always likely to cause a stir when passingthrough the ring, and the Meon Valley Stud colt (lot315) had the swagger to match his illustrious pedigree. While his siblings Kayf Tara (GB) and Opera House(GB), both by Montjeu=s sire Sadler=s Wells, raced forSheikh Mohammed, this colt is likely to appear in thedark blue livery of Susan Magnier, having been pur-chased by her husband John for 550,000gns. Thecolt=s appearance on the second day at Tattersallsmarked the end of an era, for he is the last foal of theoutstanding broodmare Colorspin (Fr) (High Top {Ire}),whose dam Reprocolor (GB) was the cornerstone of theWeinfeld family=s bloodstock empire and died last yearat the age of 32. AColorspin is retired out in the paddock now andenjoying life,@ reflected Meon Valley Stud managerDavid Wymbs. AWe wanted a filly, as he was her lastfoal, but that=s the way it goes.@ AHe is an exceptional individual,@ Wymbs continued.AA lot of people would have knocked him because hewas out of an old mare--she was 25 when she had him--but he=s done so well and thrived. He has a lot of hissire=s traits. He=s a character, but a controllable one,and I think he=s going to be a great racehorse.Colorspin was such a good broodmare that you neverwant to stop breeding from her, but you have to drawthe line somewhere.@ The stud has just one activedaughter of Reprocolor remaining: Colorvista (GB) (Shir-ley Heights {GB}), whose Shamardal colt (lot 316) wentthrough the ring directly after Colorspin=s and wasbought by John Ferguson for 50,000gns. Colorvista iscurrently in foal to Hurricane Run (Ire). Ferguson also helped make the second day of Book 1a profitable one for Meon Valley when buying a Dubawi(Ire) filly out of Reprocolor=s granddaughter Bella Lam-bada (GB) (lot 257) for 460,000gns; and a Red Ransomson of G1 Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Dash to the Top(GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) (lot 344) for 320,000gns. AIt wouldhave been lovely to have kept the Dubawi filly, but shemade so much money, we had to let her go,@ Wymbscommented. AWe have so many mares and six filliesfrom this year=s crop of foals that we=d like to keep holdof next year, but it=s a case of trying to keep the num-bers under control. Ideally, we like to have around 35 or36 mares.@ Having been at Meon Valley for 18 years, Wymbs hasa unique relationship with the broodmare band. AI=vefoaled every mare that=s on the place now exceptColorspin,@ he said proudly. AWe=re now on the fifthgeneration of Reprocolor, and that=s a lifetime=s workfor the Weinfelds--it=s a privilege to be involved withthem and with such high-quality horses.@ Meon Valley could have even more highlights today.During the final session of the auction, the stud sells acolt by Pivotal (GB) from G1 Juddmonte Internationalwinner One So Wonderful (GB) (Nashwan) (lot 636) andone by Motivator (GB) out of her sister One So Marvel-lous (GB) (Nashwan) (lot 635). Also selling is a colt byRed Ransom from the G1 Sun Chariot S. winnerKissogram (GB) (Caerleon) (lot 496). All are descen-dants of One in a Million (Ire). AWe=ve got some veryinteresting colts for the last day, especially the Pivotal,@said Wymbs. AFor a late foal, he=s really well-developedand he has so much power. I can=t even begin to keepup with him when he=s walking. I think he=ll finish oursale off with a bit of a bang.@

Carroll Takes Shot at Alcibiades With Quick Breeze... Trainer David Carroll, who will send out Acoma (Em-pire Maker) in Saturday=s GI First Lady S. at Keeneland, hopes to get the weekend started off the right waywhen he saddles Quick Breeze (Ghostzapper) in the GIDarley Alcibiades S. a day earlier. The two-year-old filly,a $425,000 KEESEP purchase by My MeadowviewFarm, comes off a 3 3/4-length victory over thePolytrack at Arlington Park Sept. 11 (video). That racewas at a mile. In her first start, back on July 5, QuickBreeze was a well-beaten fourth going six furlongs atChurchill Downs. AShe is an interesting filly,@ Carrollsaid. AThe first time she ran, it was in the slop at Chur-chill, and she really ran two races in one. She did notlike the mud at all and did not do any running until thelast quarter mile, when she got in the clear and closedwell, even though the chart doesn=t show it. She=s asmall filly and was a little immature, so we gave her thesummer off.@ Quick Breeze has two published workssince her maiden score. She breezed four furlongs in:49 3/5 at Churchill Sept. 28, then came back to post a:48 2/5 drill under the Twin Spires Oct. 4. On Friday,Quick Breeze will break from post position 11. CoreyLanerie will be aboard for the first time. AThere is a lotof speed in there, and I know she will close,@ Carrollsaid. AI wish we were a little more to the inside, but Iknow she will drop back and Corey should able to saveground. There is no pressure on us.@ Quick Breeze hasthe pedigree to be a runner. AThe plan is certainly for ElusivePimpernel to run in the Racing Post Trophy, barringaccidents,@ said Marcus Hosgood, racing secretary totrainer John Dunlop. AHe=s fine at the moment and hedid his first piece since the Acomb S. last Friday. Heworked again on Tuesday morning, and it=s so far, sogood with him.@ Elusive Pimpernel was making it twowins from two starts last time, where subsequent listedwinner Emerald Commander (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) wassecond and G2 Champagne S. winner Poet=s Voice (GB)(Dubawi {Ire}) was back in third. AThe form of his Yorkvictory looks absolutely cast-iron, and it looks likelythat he would enjoy the step up to a mile,@ Hosgoodadded. AHe has won on good and fast going, but Iwould be hopeful that we might get a bit of cut in theground at Doncaster--racing over a mile on easierground should be ideal for him. I know it=s a bit of acliche, but we will take one step at a time before decid-ing where to aim him next year.@

Noseda Slams Longchamp Starter... Jeremy Noseda openly criticized the Longchampstarter after the defeat of Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}) in Sunday=s G1 Prix de l=Abbaye. Followingthe debacle that occurred in that race 12 months agowhen the Searchers Syndicate=s star filly was left in thegates after her stall failed to open, her trainer be-moaned the circumstances that surrounded the latestrenewal. AFleeting Spirit tried hard on Sunday--it wasanother brave effort,@ Noseda said of the runner-up.AShe is a consistent and classy performer. I would notsay much more, other than I=m disgusted at the Frenchstarter and the lack of helpfulness towards a filly whoseproblems in the loading procedure have been caused bya malfunction of the French starting stalls at last year=sAbbaye. SARATOGA MEET EXTENDED The prestigiousSaratoga meeting will grow an extra four days nextyear, the New York Racing Association announced

yesterday. The 2010 meeting willbegin on Friday, July 23, and con-sist of 40 racing days, runningthrough Labor Day. The GI CoachingClub American Oaks, traditionallyheld at Belmont Park, will shift toSaratoga on opening weekend, pending approval from the NYRABoard of Directors. AGoing into thisyear=s Saratoga meet, we predictedthat wagering would decline approx-imately five percent from last year--we greatly exceeded those expecta-tions,@ said NYRA President & CEOCharles Hayward. AThe expansion to

four racing days was a measured decision that reflectsthe overwhelming demand for racing that we have fromhorsemen in Saratoga.@ Hayward continued, AAt a timewhen many tracks in the country had to cut back onracing days, we not only continued to run six days aweek at Saratoga, but did so with more horses enteredper race as compared to last year. This reflects the highdemand for quality racing at Saratoga and is a verypositive indicator for expanding the 2010 meet.@
