Opinion

This past week we have started to see the bacon sizzle on the griddle! The

new Congress has begun an ambitious array of counter-measures to the President’s

over-reaching. First, there is lots of “talk” about key issues. Second, there is real

legislation which threatens to unwind some of Obama’s surreptitious plans. For

example, the WH has rejected the idea that Congress should have a say in the Iran

Nuclear Talks. Make no mistake, these talks have been going on for years without

significant resolution. All the while Iran continues its buildup of nuclear materials,

works towards weaponization and remains on the State Sponsor of Terrorism List.

Despite these talks, Iran has opted to sign a military deal with Russia! Another

example, Obama has unilaterally declared a relaxation of diplomatic relations with

Cuba. “The 50-year Embargo hasn’t worked – Let’s try something else”. Since his

first year in office Obama has declared he would close Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo).

The President is, however, encountering heavy resistance to both. Cuba is still on

the Official State Sponsor of Terrorism List. Cuba is still an oppressive and

corrupt dictatorship. Despite 50 years of trade & tourism with Russia, Britain,

France, Spain and others the Castro regime has remained unchanged. Therefore,

the likelihood it will change by virtue of American trade & tourism is very small.

The island country has welcomed Russian warships to its harbors (even in recent

weeks), has deployed Russia missiles within 90 miles of America (in the 60’s), and

continues to make partnerships with other dictators. Back to the original premise:

Gitmo has been an American possession, a naval base & fueling station since the

Platt Amendment in 1903. A second lease was signed in 1934 without a termination

date. According to records, it can be ended by the U.S. alone, by bilateral

agreement, but not Cuba alone.1 It is the finest detention center in the world.

Washington knows there is no better place to put enemy combatants – anywhere.

Presumably, these diplomatic negotiations are the preamble to closing Gitmo2.

Ah, but the spider web gets bigger! In recent weeks, President Obama (as

the Leader of the Free World) has been heavily criticized when he failed to show

for the anti-terrorism rally in Paris. 44 international leaders attended – but not

Obama. Now, the new Congress has invited Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss ISIS, Al

Qaeda, Palestine and trouble in the Middle East. It did not notify or invite Obama.

(Remember, Barack Obama repeatedly insulted the Prime Minister, once leaving the

middle of negotiations just to get lunch!) The President bitterly objected that it

was against protocol, but behind closed doors was “fuming” and threatening

retaliation! Both Obama and Biden have refused to meet with Netanyahu in

Washington in March. Then, just this last week Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah died.

Inconveniently, Obama had to rearrange his trip to India to attend the King’s

Memorial.

Recap: President Obama has (over time) insulted Queen Elizabeth by

returning a statue of Winston Churchill but then attended Mandela’s Memorial. He

refused to attend the anti-terrorism rally in Paris but changed his flight plan to

attend King Abdullah’s Memorial. The U.S. still gives foreign aid to Palestine –

although it is the enemy of Israel. He doesn’t want Congress or Israel “meddling” in

Iran Nuclear Talks. He has pre-empted Congress in mitigating the embargo of Cuba

– for what benefit? All this would appear to be a blenderized foreign policy unless

you consider each of the pieces is part of a larger complex scheme. I doubt it is

merely Legacy Shopping.

This then sets the stage for congressional debate on defunding Executive

Amnesty in February, followed by the National Debt Limit debate in March. This is

an important preamble to challenging the President’s abuse of executive powers and

yet bigger issues. The threat of Veto is on the table but the debate is already

underway. Punch – Counter Punch. It will be interesting to see his response to

being personally circumvented just as he has done to so many others! He resents

others who violate his sphere of authority and he dislikes being in the background.

You watch – he is trying to regain his relevance.
