H EADLINES
I hope everyone has now recovered
from the chocolate haze that was
Easter.
I am very pleased to announce that
in February Headway ADP officially
received our third party verification
approval. This means that we have
been assessed as meeting the NSW
Disability Service Standards. The
verification process and the formali-
sation of our quality management
system was a good experience for
Headway ADP. It provided us the
opportunity to review and reassess
our policies, procedures and opera-
tions to ensure we stay focused on
continuously improving our ser-
vices. Thank you to all the partici-
pants, carers, staff and management
who participated in the process.
Other exciting news is that Headway
ADP is now an ADHC approved ser-
vice to provide Life Choices, Active
Ageing, Community Participation
and Flexible Respite programs.
Through the funding packages we
can provide support such as commu-
nity support workers, case-co-
ordination, person centred planning,
personal, social and community con-
nections and organise and attend
medical appointments with you and
more. If you already have a package
and would like to talk about your op-
tions or if you would to know more
information about eligibility for
packages please see your Key Worker
or call the office on 9790 0046.

On the 10th February Headway ADP had organised
a fishing trip outing to Lambeth Reserve Picnic
Point. On the day Ari, Gary, Chun Bao, Hung and
I attended.
The area is picturesque surrounded by trees and
The George’s River. The weather was warm and
sunny. Hung “the champ fisherman” caught the
first bream of the day. This encouraged all of us to
keep fishing in the hope that one of us would catch
a bigger fish.
As a group we all had turns cooking the BBQ
lunch which tasted very good. Then we headed off
for our scenic stroll on the boardwalk. On our
walk we saw lovely homes, boats and jet skis on
the water, ducks, geese, native birds, mangroves
and huge sandstones. Every direction you looked
you could see something. The boardwalk is very

PETER ADVENTURES TO…...
Day Five :
Evans Head has Memorial Aerodrome, very im-
portant in our nation’s defence during World War
2. It is the resting place of the once feared and re-
spected F111 fighter bomber. Still the best ever cre-
ated seizing production because its fuselage is made
out of asbestos. Journeying onto Yamba, a pictur-
esque seaside village at the mouth of the Clarence
River, with possibly the best climate in all of NSW
according to Scientists.
Day Six :
After a visit to Wombah coffee plantation, run by
two of sweetest old ladies you would ever meet, we
had a river cruise along the Clarence River with
Historic commentary and a visit to the Yamba mu-
seum with its strong maritime history.
Day Seven:
Maclean refers to itself as Australia’s Scottish Town
and has the Tartan of ever clan that travelled the
highland road. I found both sides of my family
tree.
Next it was south to the town of Corindi Beach and
the Yarrawarrah Aboriginal Cultural Centre with
our tour guide EJ who gave us an insight into the
Gumbaynggirr culture.
Day Eight:
Departing from Kempsey our last overnight desti-
nation, we travelled to Ricardo’s tomato's and
strawberries at Blackmans Point just outside Port
Macquarie. There are two acres of greenhouses
which produce high quality hydroponically grown
tomatoes & strawberries. It has state of the art
computerised technology which controls
irrigation, nutrient application, temperature, light
insect & disease control .
Then it was off to the crystalline pottery gallery for
our last lunch on the road before our return trip to
Sydney. What an eventful eight days was had
on-board. Well done KTG tours.

POLICY UPDATE
I just wanted to say 17th February 1994 is the day I registered my business name Y-Judes. Thank you to
my three special friends who helped to name my business Bill, Murray and Cameron.
As reported in the January edition of Headlines,
the Disability Inclusion Act commenced in De-
cember 2014. That article provided an overview
of the Act and now we take closer look at what the
Act means for people with disability, their families
and carers.
CHOICE & CONTROL
Under the Act the Department of Family and
Community Services (FACS) can provide funding
in a number of ways to give people with disability
control over their supports and services. This will
help people to get ready for the NDIS. FACS can
offer individualised funding directly to people to
have real choice and control. If you choose to
manage your own funds support will be available
to help you.
QUALITY SUPPORTS SO YOU
CAN LIVE LIFE YOUR WAY
All FACS disability services and services funded
through FACS must follow the NSW Disability
Service Standards. This makes sure that the ser-
vices you get are consistent and of a good quality.
Service providers must make sure that the infor-
mation and support you get meets your personal
goals and needs.
SAFEGUARDS
Everyone has the right to live free from abuse, ne-
glect and harm. The Act includes new safeguards
to help this happen for people with disability using
supports and services. Disability service staff
employed by FACS or funded organisations will
undergo tighter criminal record checks. Also accom-
modation and centre-based respite services must
report serious incidents of abuse and neglect of
people with disability to the NSW Ombudsman.
INCLUSION
The Act commits the NSW government to promote
the inclusion of people with disability and this will
continue even after NSW had moved to the NDIS. A
State Disability Inclusion Plan will aim to improve
access to mainstream services and ensure that
people with disability are included in the communi-
ty. NSW Government Departments, local councils
and other public authorities will also develop Disa-
bility Inclusion Action Plans. The development and
review of these plans must also include people with
disability.
YOUR RIGHTS
The law officially recognises that people with disabil-
ity have the same human rights as others. The Act
will help to dismantle existing barriers so that people
with disability can participate fully in their commu-
nities. These rights are included in the Act as
‘Principles’. The principles include the right to
respect and dignity, the right to make decisions that
affect your life and the right to enjoy a full social and
economic life as part of the community.

BOWLING OLYMPIAD
On the 24th of February Kathryn and I went to Gloria
Jeanes, Revesby, which is located at 19-29 Marco
Avenue, Revesby NSW 2212. It was extremely easy to
park as the carpark was located right next to the ven-
ue. We sat outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Inside was very
crowded with tables and chairs which gave the shop a warm and cosy feel.
I ordered a hot chocolate with cream on top and banana bread. I enjoyed
my hot chocolate and the banana bread was very filling, I loved it. The
price was very reasonable as the coffee was $4.60 and the banana bread
was $4.40. I would highly recommend this coffee shop as it has good
service with friendly staff. I would go every week if I could and I give it
four coffees out of four.

W ednesday the 1st April 2015, saw the VI Annual Bowling

JUDITH
BOB
S ince my early twenties I had a growing passion for photography. It kept on growing and wouldn’t leave.
I took it further and made it my career. I worked freelance as well as under contract. This job was very
rewarding as I had the satisfaction of doing something I loved as well as giving joy to the people I took the
photos for.
Before my injury the cameras and equipment were analogue and by the time I got out of the hospital every-
thing was digital.
My love for photography remained with me and I feel it has grown stronger. In fact this motivated me to get
out of the house and try to capture different environments using my camera. It was very frustrating and dif-
ficult at first, but I persevered and managed to overcome most of my frustrations. I became very good at us-
ing the analogue camera and processing the film to view my shots. The digital camera took a little more get-
ting used to, however I really wanted to learn and I delved deeper into the process. I have been working
with Meredith, my photography tutor, for a few years now. It has been extremely helpful. I have learnt how
to transfer photos onto the laptop, using different settings, lighting and movement.
I also go to the Mounties Camera Club on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm. The Club is located at 101
Meadows Road Mt Pritchard. The Camera Club provides a welcoming environment and suitable for mem-
bers of all abilities. They will assist you with digital shots, use of prints or slides, monochrome or colour.
On Tuesday 3rd February I got a big surprise when my photo “Rainbow over Anzac Bridge” won first place
for colour. This has inspired me to carry on and improve myself.
I recommend you give photography a try and see how you feel about it. Photos are also a good prompt for
helping to remember things, finding words and expressing feelings. You can create something great from
nothing, photography helps looking at things differently - your way!

I am writing about an exercise place I go to c a l l e d E x e r c i s e P r e s c r i p t i o n & Physiotherapy at Shop 7 266-274 Burwood Rd Burwood NSW 2134.
I met Daniel La Spina with Maria, from Headway ADP and Daniel went through
the program explaining how the program works and how to lose weight by exercising and build strength in my body. I also prac-ticed putting one foot in front of the other and balancing which has also been a great success.
I started with gentle exercise and slowly progressed as time went on. The staff are fantastic and are always there to help and monitor you. I love the way in which everyone mingles with each other and you al-ways feel special.
I feel very relaxed with the program only Daniel keeps an eye on you and make’s sure you complete a program and he does not let you get away with anything. The atmosphere is relaxing and the time flies by.
So a special thank you to Daniel La Spina Exercise Physiologist, Robyn Bombell P h y s i o t h e r a p i s t , G r e g B o m b e l l (physiotherapist), Hannah, Rebecca and Cathy for a place where I can go and not feel out of place. I would also like to thank the other members as it has been a pleasure being a part of the class and thank everyone for just supporting each other in their battle to become healthier and fitter.
