Dear Parents and Friends, Last week our main focus was on preparations for Royal Russell Day. On Saturday I was delighted to welcome Parents and Friends to join us at our celebration of the success of both the Junior and Senior School and to congratulate our prizewinning pupils on all that they have achieved. For those of you who were not able to attend, this event can be watched on YouTube, using the following link HERE. I would like to thank all of the staff involved in the production and in particular, Miss Parish, Mr Dear and his Media team and the Operations and Support staff who transformed the Sports Hall into our celebration venue. Following the successful Royal Russell Day, I was pleased to join Staff and Parents on top pitch for a cricket match, where the Parents’ team dominated the Headmaster’s XI. It is clear that the staff are going to have to up their game for next year! It was therefore very pleasing to see the Royal Russell 1 st XI beat Wallington by 4 wickets on Tuesday. On Friday 20 th June, I joined many Old Russellians at the Annual Riverside Reunion where I had the opportunity to meet members of our school community from past and present, including Clive and Monique Roscoe who were on their honeymoon from America after meeting at Royal Russell in the 1960’s. It is always pleasing to see the Royal Russell bond spanning decades and generations - once a Russellian, always a Russellian! On the same evening, our CCF Cadets were entertaining our Year 4 pupils at the Annual CCF Sleepover with games, camp fires, bedtime stories and not much sleep for the Cadets and Staff on duty! At our final whole school assembly last week, I was delighted to present many awards including those for sporting and musical achievement and special Headmaster’s Awards to those students who have received over 50 merits this term. The breadth of these awards further showcases the immense talent we have within our school. This week we have been running a university preparation week for our Year 12 pupils and today they have experienced Teaching English as a Foreign Language, university finance, first aid, driving skills and self -defence alongside interview skills. This full programme has been very useful in preparing our Year 12s for the serious matter of university application ahead. Our trips programme is now in full swing, with two CCF camps out this week, the Year 12 Biology Field Trip to Slapton in Devon and a Year 7 day trip to Boulogne, which amazingly avoided all Channel Tunnel and Port of Calais disputes! The Spanish trip left for Barcelona this morning, the Geography trip to Utah leaves tomorrow and the Music tour to Germany travels out on Sunday. Alongside this, Year 8 have also enjoyed a Science and Technology workshop in Great Hall today. Last night, I enjoyed the fabulous Year 6 production of ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’. It was terrific to see these young performers enjoying working together so very much. I have taken time to read through reports for Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 and very much enjoyed seeing just how hard the pupils have worked during this year. Many now deserve a good rest so that they can return refreshed and ready to face new challenges in September. After Royal Russell Day and this tremendously busy week, it is very reassuring to know that the School is in such good health and I am very much looking forward to all of the new developments and opportunities which we have planned for next year. Our Open Day is on Saturday 26 th September. This is an important day in the School year and all pupils are expected to be available for the morning. Please note this date in your diaries now. From the Chapel In a midsummer evensong, the Choristers, Barbershop and Choral Society sang Zadok the Priest, one of the four anthems Handel composed for the coronation of King George II in 1727. The anthem has been sung at all coronations since, including that of our School patron in 1953. At that point in the service in Westminster Abbey, the Archbishop of Canterbury anointed the Queen with oil, making the shape of a cross, on her hands, breast and head, symbolizing God’s influence on what she does [hands], feels [heart] and thinks [head]. The Archbishop then said, ‘As Solomon was anointed King by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, so be thou anointed, blessed and consecrated Queen”.

Mozart said of Handel, ‘When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt." We felt that thunderbolt when the Choir sang that anthem, which includes, God save the king. Long live the king. God save the king. May the king live forever.

In the sermon we heard of a medieval king of England asking the Baron of Elmley three difficult questions, including, ‘What starts life walking on four legs, then on two, and finally on three?’ It is the famous Riddle of the Sphinx, of Greek legend, which the hero Oedipus correctly answered: Man [crawling, walking and using a stick].

In Tuesday’s School service, we heard of some of the horrors of the Battle of Waterloo, 200 years ago last week, when a British and allied army, led by the Duke of Wellington, with the help of a Prussian army, defeated the French army of Napoleon Bonaparte. Of the 190,000 soldiers of both sides who took part, a third were killed, wounded or never found. The Duke, the victorious commander, said, referring to all the dead and wounded, ‘It is quite impossible to think of glory …Next to a battle lost, the greatest misery is a battle gained.’

Where is God in war? The Christian cross is a powerful symbol of God’s presence with us, his beloved children, in suffering, death and beyond.

Scotland Forever! by Elizabeth Lady Butler. Her depiction of the Scots Greys charge at the Battle of Waterloo shows the glory but not the suffering. In actuality, it appears that they were unable to build up the momentum of a gallop, because the broken ground obliged them to advance at a canter.

In the final School service, Mr Endersby spoke of our place in the solar system. The appearance of Spacewoman Anna suggested a link. Whilst Mr Millward played part of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, we reflected on our contributions this year to make the world a better place.

Answer to Chapel Quiz 49: What is the meaning of Psalm 147

verse 10: He (God) delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man? A modern translation helps here: The strength of the war horse means nothing to him, it is not infantry that interests him. (Jerusalem Bible, 1966) The Psalmist is contrasting military might with [in the next verse] the strength of God’s love.

Pupil Howler: Why did the Israelites made a golden calf? Because they didn't have enough gold to

make a cow.

Chapel Quiz 50: Why did they make a golden calf? Prizes to the pupils with the best answer.

This week in Foodland

Royal Russell Day was a fantastic moment to share with the School’s community the fantastic achievements by the students in the Food Technology department this year.

In conjunction with Art and Design and Design Technology departments, an exposition of the students’ work was created.

During the awards ceremony in the morning, it was very pleasing to recognise the achievement of all students, in particular, two students who have worked non-stop in a determined fashion to ensure that they reached their maximum potential. Harriet in Year 11 (pictured left) and Niamh in Year 13. Congratulations, ladies, you truly deserve these awards.

Below are photos of the exhibition for Food Technology celebrating the year that was.

Year 9 Spanish pupils visit two Year 1

classes at the Junior School Building on the success of last year’s visit to the Nursery, Mrs Bird, MFL teacher and Mrs Mandinga, teacher of French and Spanish, organised a visit to two Year 1 classes on 1st July, where Year 9 pupils presented their end of year projects in Spanish. These projects included a story board/fairytale of “A boy who cried Shark”, a poster on Marbella, a video on Spanish skateboarding tricks and a presentation on traditional Spanish dishes listing the ingredients. The projects were all produced in Spanish by Ben Briggs, Alex Brothers, Maximilian Burrell, Dominic Hill, Maxwell James, Libby Jones, George Humphreys, Alec McLaren, Christopher Patten-Walker, Nico Vaughan and Jerel Yankah. This was a very rewarding initiative for both Junior and Senior school pupils which, no doubt, will be repeated in the future.

Year 8 STEM Day On Wednesday this week, Year 8 pupils had a whole day of STEM activities based in Great Hall.

They started with some tricky challenges outside and they worked effectively as teams in the searing heat. This was followed by some practical activities designed to test their teams problem solving skills.

The main challenge involved building a crane which would lift heavy objects a height of 7.5cm. There were two teams that excelled at this challenge and some of the individuals who contributed the most were Zac Jennings, Divyen Patel, Vincent Qiu, Tommy Stanhope and Daniel Prefontaine.

For balancing ten 6 inch nails on one upright nail special mention goes to Elizabeth Fenton and Ria Kamdar.

For their enthusiasm and commitment to all the activities of the day two students stood out – Ella Davies and Louis Burden.

Well done to all Y8 for participating so positively and they go away much the wiser about how important Science Technology Engineering and Maths are in the future development of our world.

Year 6/7 French Play On Wednesday Year 6 and Year 7 had a visit from the Flying Theatre Company in the Junior School Hall.

The play entitled Le tour de France tackled many topics covered this year.

The little town of Pasdequoi is an interesting place; George is intent on winning the coveted Yellow Jersey of Le Tour De France. But can he get fit enough in time?

Chantalle is searching for l'homme de ses rêves, but where could he be ?

We joined George and Chantalle as they set out in search of their dreams. But obstacles had to be overcome. George had to get fit, Chantalle had to find George and together they had to find George's missing bicycle.

Pupils watched and listened to the actors as they ordered food, followed directions, got interviewed on TV and performed plenty of magic tricks. They also had a chance to sing along with “Le Rap De La Santé” and got squirted with water!

The French content was certainly challenging but made fun and interactive. Both pupils and teachers were encouraged to take part and some even joined George and Chantalle on stage!

This was the perfect conclusion to a whole year's work bringing our curriculum to life… and that is what learning languages is all about!

“Moules “ anyone?

Year 12 French students and teachers enjoyed a lovely end of year celebration at the “Little Bay” restaurant in South Croydon. As well as eating lovely food and speaking French (of course!) we were serenaded with French and Italian opera. We loved the version of la vie en rose d’Edith Piaf too. Students almost joined in … Bonnes vacances et à l’année prochaine!

Sun, sea, sand and lots of yummy French sweets was the order of the day for 50 year 7s on Monday.

Despite the early start, all turned up on time bright eyed and raring to go as we set off for Boulogne. First stop of the day was the Nausicaa aquarium which was relaxing and fun in equal measure and, it has to be said, nice and cool compared to the heat outside. Having said hello to Nemo, Dory, a group of sea lions and the penguins, it was time for a picnic on the beach and a bit of a kick-about.

A few braved a quick paddle before it was off for a wander around the old town, soaking up the rays and sampling the delights of the local cafes - not to mention buying a few souvenirs. No trip to France is complete without stocking up on chocolate and biscuits at the hypermarket before catching the shuttle home.

The journey itself rounded off the day’s fun with an impromtu dance show down between Mr Bird and some of the pupils…. So who had the best moves? Jago? Oscar? The prize might have to go to Mr Bird!

Year 12 Economics Study Visit to Croydon Town Centre

The highlight of the Economics year is undoubtedly our annual trip to Croydon.

Our Year 12 students assembled in quiet anticipation of investigating the different pricing and business strategies by different types of firms in the city centre.

We enjoyed a stroll through Surrey Street market to illustrate the effect that selling similar products has on price.

Kingsley received a harsh lesson in revenue maximisation pricing as his bargain ‘3 punnets of blackberries for £1.00’ proved to be mouldy and sour!

Students visited several banks to find out their latest promotional activities before finding time to investigate product differentiation and price differences in a number of different ‘branded coffee shops’.

The data collected has already been analysed and we will be referring back to our trip during our A2 studies in September.

Boarders Final Trip of the Year Last weekend our Boarders enjoyed a thrill-filled trip to Thorpe Park.

Price transparency in Surrey Street Market

From the Sport Department

The U12 rounders team played really strongly at the Croydon Schools Rounders tournament last week. Their batting, in particular, was the best it had been all season. They comfortably made it through the sections but lost by a rounder to Coloma in the final.

Congratulations to Maddy Longhurst who has been selected to play for the Croydon Netball team at the London Youth Games.

We wish both Maddy and her team the very best of luck.

The 1st XI Cricket team beat Wallington Grammar in a hard fought match bringing their season to a successful close.

Well done young men!

Athletics Success

Amanfi Aggrey represented Surrey at the recent Inter-County Athletics Championships.

He was in the U15 100m and came 1st in 11.84 seconds!

Trampolining Success

Over the last few months, Grace Scott has been competing in the London Regional qualifying trampoline competitions where she has won 3 and came 2nd in the forth.

This means Grace qualified in the U13 category for the London Regional Championships. The competition meant that the top 12 for each category competed and then the top 8 went through to the finals.

Not only did Grace qualify and compete in the Final, She won it!

Table Tennis Success

Having reached the final of the Surrey and London South singles competition earlier in the year, Liam Smith represented Royal Russell in the Jack Petchey Individual London Finals on Saturday 20th June.

He played very well and reached the final of the consolation.

Football Success

At his Presentation Day for Shelton Athletic FC, Nikita received 2 awards out of 3 in his team – he won Best Player by the parents vote and Best Player by the management/coach. Nikita was the only boy to win 2 trophies!

Senior School Ski Trip 2016 Arrangements have now been finalised for the Senior trip for Easter 2016. The exact dates are from Sunday 27 March to Monday 4 April 2016. The following information should help you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with an application. Hopefully, you have seen the video produced by our Media Department and agree with me that this trip represents a fantastic opportunity. We are going to Jay Peak, Vermont, USA. http://jaypeakresort.com/ The price for the trip is £1,597, which represents a reduction in price from last year. I do understand that this is still expensive. However this total does include flights, accommodation, most meals, a lift pass, lessons (with qualified instructors), helmets (compulsory), skis and boot hire, insurance, transfers to and from the airport and evening entertainment. In the past the evening entertainment has included trips to shopping malls, rodeos, ice hockey and basketball games, bowling and eating in fantastic restaurants. The water park at Jay has to be seen to be believed! Please note that the price does not include personal clothing, the cost of lunch whilst in resort (this needs to be bought on the mountain) and any additional spending money to have, for example, when the group goes to the retail outlet village http://www.premiumoutlets.com/pdfs/Woodbury.pdf. Although this trip is open to everyone in the Senior School, there is a maximum of only 40 places available. Please note that in previous years demand for places has been fierce and some applicants have not been able to go. Therefore to be completely fair we will be using the following selection policy:

The first of these is a prompt return of the reply slip to me (Mr Davies), or the School Secretary, Mrs Smith.

The second is being up to date with all schoolwork and demonstrating good behaviour in and around

school. If you wish your child to be considered for a place, please sign and return the reply slip below together with a copy of your child’s current passport. Please ensure that this passport has at least 6 months validity from the date of travel. Also note that if your child requires a visa to enter the USA, you will need to organise this as soon as a place on the trip is confirmed. The acquisition of visas is not the responsibility of the School. Half of the cost for the trip will be included on your September 2015 school bill and the other half on the January 2016 school bill, that is £789.50 each time. Successful applicants will be notified and the cost added to the school bills.
