Dear Friends,

Bringing communities together in prayer was a great gift of Father McDonough. He began his healing services with a few words of thanksgiving to God for bringing every-one together for the healings we need. As director of the Healing and Restoration Min-istry I am delighted to try to do the same each last Sunday of the month. Some families sit together, many people come to pray with or without their family.

Whatever I can do to continue learning effective ways of family prayer the better healer I can be. Our Lenten seminar dealt with “The Healing of Families” written by Fr Joseph Yosefu. Fr. John Hampsch says of him “ he has explored the spiritual approaches that have proven to be most effective and at time even miraculous.

Over forty years ago Fr McDonough brought many families and single members together in different parts of the world. With humility, love and the presence of the Holy Spirit and the help of the Mother of God to name a few like Cardinal Suenens, Fr Robert DeGrandis, Kathryn Kulman, Fr Benedict Groeschel, Sr Ann Shields, Fr Cantalamessa, Fr Michael Scanlan, Fr Ralph DiOrio, Fr Bill Adams, Scott Peck, Dr Kenneth McAll, Barbara Shlemon, Dr Douglas Schoeninger, Fr Tom Forrest, Fr Allen, Agnes Sanford, Fr Richard McAlear, Michelle Moran, Charles Whit-field, Fr Tom DiLorenzo, Dorothea DeGrandis, Sr Nancy Kellar, Sr Bridge McKenna, Fr Scallon, Russ Parker, Francis and Judith MacNutt, Sheila, Dennis and Fr Matt Linn, Aggie Neck, Babsie Bleasdell, Maria Vadia, Pattie Gallagher, Fr Bob Masciocchi, David Thorp, Peter Kreeft, Fr Albert McPhearson, Fr Joseph Whalen, Fr Bob Hogan, Gabriel Amorth, Ralph Martin, Bishop Sam Jacobs, Sr MaryAnn, Fr Fortea, Fr John Bertolucci, Fr George Montague, Walter Matthews, Neal Lorenzo and Fr Edward McDonough have given us something with which we can work in this apostolate. Now, Fr. Joseph from Kampala, Uganda adds to the list of prayer leaders for which we are very thankful.

I will celebrate Easter Mass for all of our co-apostles. Hopefully when we pronounce our Baptismal vows we will lift up our prayers

for the life of the family and protection from evil that it needs.

Blessing, Rev. Robert Lennon C.Ss.R.

… AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NO BODY OF LITERATURE ON CHARISMATIC RENEWAL Fr. McDonough, a Redemptorist priest from Boston, MA., who has been involved in the healing

ministry for the last 15 years. A native of Boston, Father McDonough was prayed with for the baptism of the spirit by a group of people at a prayer meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, while he was stationed in Richmond, Va., working in a poor black community . “ I was rather mystified by the whole thing, he admitted. “I thought it was rather strange. But there was friendship there and faith and a spirit of prayer for people. He was sufficiently impressed to drive the 130 miles from Richmond to Bethesda two or three times a month to attend prayer meetings.

“For about a year I thought I was only half baptized in the Spirit,” he said. “Every body seemed to be great friends with Jesus, really pal-sy wal-sy, like they just had a cup of coffee with him.” Father McDonough didn’t feel that way and noted at the time there was no body of literature on Charismatic renewal to refer to.

Something Father did notice after his baptism in the Holy Spirit was that whereas he had been very upset with the poor people with whom he worked when they would routinely not keep appointments, he found that after he began attending meetings, he would say to himself: “That’s okay if they don’t come. I can read the Bible or I can pray for them.” What was anger became peace. “That’s important,” Father pointed out. “ The little graces, the little things the Holy Spirit does for you are what change you. “ The Church World J.Robbins May 1986

In December 2013, I published a book St. Jean Baptiste Parish and the Franco– Americans of Lowell, Massachusetts.

It is the story of the immigration of the French Canadians to New England and the story of the Oblates of Mary Immacu-late who came to minister to them.

The book had

originally been

published in French

in 1993,but later the

people requested

that it be translated

into English and

more material added

to update it.

Fr. McDonough advised me to accept and to undertake the project. The writing of the new material required a great deal of research and difficulty. He became, as ever a constant source of encouragement, help and prayer. Not long before he died, he told me that I had to finish it since “it is impor-tant.”

The wisdom of his words is now clear. After almost ten years of work, the book is published and on February 8, 2014 the book signing took place at the Shrine of St. Joseph the Worker in Lowell, MA before a large and joyful assembly of people.

For the first time, a book tells a story of how the French Canadian people in Lowell lived out their faith and built their parishes and cultural institutions with joy and constant trust in God.

I am very grateful to God for having been able to write this book and for the gift of Fr. McDonough to help me.

St. Joseph “Joseph greatest characteristic was his be-ing a guardian, his great mission to be a guardian. St Joseph is the model of every educator and every believer, because he was able to cross the darkness of doubt, the experience of exile and of having to flee from his home, with-out ever losing, his trust in God and in His love. Learn from him that only faith in God can turn doubt into certainty, evil into good, the total dark-ness of the night into a radiant dawn.”

“For a number of years now we have been saying the Divine Mercy Chaplet at every Healing Service at Mission Church and many other services certainly that is a sign that we have been blessed by God and His Holy Spirit to make this a special time for meditating and praying for the mercy of God. If I could pray for one grace today and ask God to give you that grace, I would pray for the grace of you having the faith and confidence in God’s Mercy that you should have and you be enlightened to understand how merciful and loving He is.”
