Recent studies have shown that the healthcare environment affects clinical outcomes. Given its impact on patients, visitors, and staff. A person entering a healthcare facility seeking to maintain or restore health and to have a positive experience will not achieve this if the environment does not promote health.

As you may have experienced yourself, most of the hospitals and clinics built in the 20th century were not designed for the healing of patients and comfort of family.
Consider for example, how the focus in many hospital rooms can be the somewhat frightening medical equipment, while the halls throughout are painted a depressing hospital green color with noisy, overly waxed VCT floors.

[ Evidence points to the real benefits of healthcare facilities designed around patient, family, and staff needs and preferences. These benefits not only improve patient outcomes and increase staff effectiveness and morale, they also help administrators meet key safety goals, reduce costs, and increase market share. Comfort and Ergonomics for Staff[ A recent study fond that the primary reason for increased lower
extremity musculoskeletal injuries is the extension of work-hours of healthcare staff over the past several year
[ Fact: an average empty hospital bed can weigh 850lbs and when occupied, often exceeds 1,000 pounds.
[ Floor coverings that easily compress under pressure create higher rolling resistance which requires staff to exert more force when pushing and increases the risk for injury.
[ A study found that “Flooring surface had a minimal impact on subjective discomfort during long-term standing* and no flooring effects were found during long-term walking.”

[ Most of the alternative plasticizers are not well studied with regard to their potential effects on human health and the environment. Although many of these alternatives show promising application potential, significant exposure may lead to adverse health effects.
[ Like phthalates, these alternative plasticizers are not chemically bound to the polymer and can leach out of products.

[ Petroleum-based plastics are produced from non-renewable fossil fuel resources. The production of these plastics poses a variety of health and environmental concerns. Extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, and disposal of petroleum-derived plastics generate greenhouse gases and pollutants including hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, sulfuric acid, heavy metals, chlorofluorocarbons, polycyclic aromatic compounds, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen and sulfur dioxides.

Bio-Based Plastics
[ The production of biobased plastics is not without hazards. The use of large quantities of pesticides in industrial agricultural production and hazardous chemicals/additives such as sodium hydroxide, carbon disulfide, and chlorine in processing are of concern to human health and the environment.
[ Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) used in development of biobased plastics are also a concern because their effects in the environment are not well understood.
[ Furthermore, not all biobased plastics are biodegradable or compostable. The biodegradability or effective composting of biobased plastics is dependent on the material’s chemical structure and composition.

and maintainable without toxic stripping and finishing

[ Materials and finishes should be moisture impervious and compatible with facility-approved disinfectants used for environmental cleaning.
[ Floor surfaces, including transition areas, should be designed to minimize the risk of injury from pushing stretchers, beds, supply carts, or wheelchairs.
[ Methods to reduce noise levels should be considered including sound absorbing materials and finishes.
[ Floors should be of a matte or honed finish to limit glare. [ Finishes should be easy to maintain and repair without generating
toxic fumes, in order to minimize downtime of rooms.
