President’s Letter2016 was a tremendous year of growth and change. We kicked the year off changing our name from the Red River Technology Foundation to the Red River Charitable Foundation (RRCF) in order to reflect our evolved mission and dedication to a wider array of philanthropic projects. For the first time we extended RRCF to include our Reston, VA office and focused our initial efforts on sponsoring a huge initiative with the Children’s Science Center of Northern Virginia. The Science Center along with countless volunteers are bringing Family Science Nights to over 25 title one schools. These schools have a high percentage of low-income families and help ensure all children are meeting challenging state academic standards. This year long initiative provides an amazing opportunity for our employees and their families to volunteer and give back in their communities.

We are also part of a very exciting promotion with Operation Hat Trick (OHT) and the Boston Bruins. The TD Garden proshop is selling an OHT hat and shirt presented by Red River. Many of the Bruins players and coaches wore the apparel around Veterans Day and all proceeds from the promotion will go back to OHT to support our veterans.

Following Red River’s own industry success, the Red River Charitable Foundation continues to grow in size and scope and I’m excited to see what Foundation’s impact will be over the next twenty years. I’m enormously proud of the hard work, dedication and overwhelming enthusiasm our employees have displayed for the Foundation. Through their tireless efforts of generosity, our charitable foundation fulfills our dual mandate of supporting high school students in their pursuit of higher learning and improving the quality of life for NH veterans.

Tony DiPadovaTony attended Newport, NH High School and is currently studying Computer Science at Dartmouth College. He was a recipient of the RRCF Scholarship in 2015 and is currently working as an intern on the Business Operations Team.

Here are some comments from Tony about his internship: “While at Red River I have learned both technical and practical skills. I have learned several programming languages such as SQL, C#, C/AL, and JavaScript. I have also learned the intricacies of Integration and Reporting services in Microsoft’s SQL Server. Aside from these technical skills, I’ve learned many things that I would not have been able to learn at Dartmouth, such as how to work with a team in a business setting, particularly using agile development.”

Tony says that, “Being an RRCF Scholarship Recipient has meant the world to me. Not only has it helped my family by contributing to my tuition, the laptop and printer prevented me from needing to make several late night trips through the snow to print a paper due the next day. It also introduced me to people and an organization that care about benefiting their community and helping me to advance my education. Prior to becoming employed at Red River I was motivated by my connection to the RRCF to bring friends from Dartmouth to run in the RRCF’s Camo 5k (one of my friends even got first place out of the women). I am grateful for everything that Red River has done and continues to do for me.”

“Tony started his internship here at Red River in June last year and in less than 2 weeks, he was grasping complicated and advanced topics. We decided to assign him a research project to determine the best testing software for Red River. Less than a week later he was able to give a presentation about the top choices in the industry, and his opinion of what would be the best software for Red River to purchase. We downloaded the demo and he started working with the QA team to automated their regression testing. He was quickly able to create tests that we will be able to use going forward to verify that our software is working properly before we roll it out to production. Tony has proven to me that he can work individually and in a team environment to complete tasks in a timely manner. He is great to work with and I hope he will come back to Red River once he finishes his degree.” - Kevin Stone, Red River Lead Software Engineer

Tom PilvelaitTom attended Fall Mountain Regional High School in Langdon, NH and is currently studying Computer Science and Physics at Harvard University. He was a recipient of the RRCF Scholarship in 2015 and is currently working as an intern on the Technical Services Department. He has been working on various research tasks on different cloud services technologies such as Amazon Web Services, Big Data, and Cisco Meraki among others.

Tom says, “I think that for me the most important aspect about this experience is the sense of professionalism demonstrated here. I have held a few other summer jobs in the past, but all of these were before I could be considered an adult with responsibilities that would have an actual impact. At Red River I feel that the professional environment

has taught me invaluable skills as far as interacting with other coworkers, how I conduct myself with my own work, and what is to be expected overall at a company like Red River. After attending the Charity Golf Classic I have shared a great gratitude and respect for the program especially after meeting those responsible for making the program what it is. Without the program I would have had to make much different decisions with respect to financing my education, and the ability to not have to preoccupy my thoughts with financial burdens truly is a blessing. The program is also significant to me in that without it I probably would not have sought out the internship that I am currently in along with any other professional experiences I eventually may have with Red River in the long term. I would like to thank all of my coworkers here at Red River and anyone affiliated with the Red River Charitable Foundation for helping me pursue a higher education at my first choice college.”

“At Red River, we are constantly looking across the marketplace and across customer needs to assess which advanced information technologies, products and services are leaders in the marketplace, which are maturing quickly, and which ones our customers may be ready to adopt. Staying current takes diligence and leg work in the constantly changing IT environment. To augment this business need, we were pleased to have Thomas Pilvelait assist our team. Thomas joined us over the summer as an intern to gain insights and experience info high-tech IT engineering. He jumped right in by researching and analyzing select market aspects within Cloud Computing, Big Data, and other emerging topics. He was able to work as part of our engineering teams to identify relevant research topics, shape the research questions, and then work independently to conduct research and convey his initial findings. Thomas had to understand the context - how the analysis will be used to shape our team’s day to day activities, and in conjunction with other engineers, shape the final analysis and messaging. For example, his analysis around commercial Cloud providers helped us to educate and expand our sales teams focus and ability to develop opportunity responses and ultimately, help Red River better support and advise our customers. This internship process is seen as a win-win. We are proud to have talented individuals develop a better understanding around the hi-tech industry, enhance their communications and work experience, and add value to our mission.” - Paul Krein Red River VP, Digital and Cloud Solutions

Red River IT staff members Joey Hempel and Ronan O’Donnell volunteered their time and expertise at this exciting program held at River Valley Community College in Claremont. It was a great opportunity to spark interest in technology among middle school students. The students were grouped with college students in RVCC’s Computer Technology Program and other community volunteers. They all worked together to build brand new computers. The students also received an introductory lesson on the basics of Alice Programming. It was a fun hands-on learning experience that provided the students a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. This was a perfect example of how Red River employees contribute to the mission of RRCF!

The Montshire Museum of Science is a hands-on museum located in Norwich, Vermont, with more than 140 exhibits relating to the natural and physical sciences, ecology, and technology. The building is located on a 110-acre site near the Connecticut River, and the Museum’s outdoor environment is a large part of the visitor experience. This summer RRCF sponsored The Tinkering Loft Exhibit, an interactive space that engaged visitors in many kinds of whimsical and thought-provoking design and engineering challenges. The exhibition featured a variety of facilitated and self-serve STEM activities for every age, including Wind Vehicles, Scribble Bots, Chain Reactions, Design Planks, Big Blue Blocks, Spinning Tops, Pinball Machines, and Electric Island. Problem solving, perseverance, imagination, collaboration, and communication are just some of the lifelong skills that are strengthened through tinkering. These skills are crucial for developing thoughtful and resilient critical thinkers!

Red River sponsors this highly-acclaimed academy program that is a collaborative effort between the Claremont Middle School & the Claremont Police Department. The program provides a no cost, developmentally appropriate experience for middle school kids that fosters academic success, builds leadership skills and promotes community engagement. Project Red and Blue consists of three components: Academic, Adventure, and Community Service. Students are offered hands-on learning opportunities that include group problem solving, relevant real world application of skills and future planning. The goal of the program is to help students understand that they are part of a global community and that they have the power to positively influence and improve our community.

“Over the past two summers, two of my kids were accepted into Project Red and Blue after submitting written essays about their goals for the future. Officer Crystal Simonds has put together a program that has taken both boys through various stages of classroom learning, community service, team building, facing physical and mental fears, and mentoring. Their experiences in Project Red and Blue made them proud, confident, and excited to try new things!” - Joanne Knowlton, Red River Assistant Facility Security Officer

Blessing Bags for Homeless Veterans & Giving TreeWith Red River Inside Account Manager Melissa Tucker leading the charge, employees came together and donated money and items to fill 50 Blessing Bags for area homeless veterans. The bags were full of gloves, hats, socks, snack food, toiletries, hand and feet warmers, a gift card, and emergency sleeping bags, and were delivered to the White River Junction VA Medical Center while employees were there Christmas caroling. Another holiday initiative was a Giving Tree that resulted in providing gifts for a family with a veteran who is a single father and twin daughters.

“As always, thank you so much for your continued support and generosity towards WRJ VAMC. You have helped many veterans have a brighter holiday.” - Karen Campbell, VA Voluntary Service Chief

We are pleased to report that our internal fundraising efforts have paid off! Our employees have raised $15,000 in support of the Friends of Veterans Heating Fund. Our donation will benefit veterans in NH and VT who are struggling to keep their heat on. This is especially critical during these cold New England winters. RRCF is proud to say we’ve donated $63,000 to date to this important cause.
