Is snoringdetrimental? Getting a good nights sleep is essential

to personal health. Although sleepneeds vary depending on the individual, inadequate sleep leaves a person feelingdrowsy and cranky and may affect workperformance. Lack of sleep can tax the body in otherways as well, escalating feelings of stressand making a person more susceptible todepression or anxiety. Lack of sleep alsomay increase ones risk for hypertension, stroke and heart attack. Snoring is a condition that greatly

affects quality of sleep not only for theperson sleeping next to a snorer but alsoto the snorer himself. The Health NewsOrganization says partners of people whosnore lose approximately one hour of sleepper evening and may wake up as many as21 times per hour, a condition referred toas spousal arousal syndrome. In the meantime, the person snoring iscompromising his or her own sleep qualityand may be at a greater risk for certainmedical conditions.

    Snoring

Snoring and a condition called sleep apneaare mostly related. According to experts atPenn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, snoring is the milder form of sleep disorderedbreathing, or SDB. Snoring is essentiallya partial restriction of the airway. When aperson is snoring, some air gets throughthe trachea, causing tissues in the throat tovibrate. In cases of complete sleep apnea,no air gets through. Snoring can be mixedwith periods of apnea, resulting in a series ofsnorts, whistles and stopped breathing that can

make it difficult to get a restful nights sleep.Sleep apnea When a person is suffering from sleepapnea and periods of snoring, he or she isstruggling to get more air into his or herlungs. Air supplies may be so severely limitedthat oxygen levels drop. The body kicks intoaction and awakens the sleeper so he or shecan get oxygen. This cycle may repeat itselfhundreds of times throughout the night. Thesleeper may only awaken slightly and notremember these awakenings in the morning,

but he or she will likely feel drowsy, which isa direct byproduct of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea and snoring also may causedamage to the heart. Over time, a lack ofoxygen can put undue stress on the heart, leading to a greater risk of high bloodpressure, stroke and heart attack. In addition, impotence, memory loss and migraines mayresult from oxygen deprivation.Snoring treatments Treating snoring often involves theassistance of a sleep specialist. Changing

sleeping position or relying on breathing aidesthat help open the airways while sleeping alsomay help. Quitting smoking and losing weightcan help reduce instances of snoring as well. Even if snoring has not progressedto complete apnea, a sleep expert mayrecommend a device called a CPAP machine,or a continuous positive air pressure pump. This device blows a steady stream of airthrough the sleepers mouth and nose to helpkeep the tissues of the throat from collapsing, resulting in snoring or obstruction.

Snoring is a nuisance for all involved,

especially the family members or spouses

that are subjected to long nights next to

snoring partners. Yet snoring can be much

more than just a nuisance and may even

be indicative of a blockage of the airways

common among those people with sleep

    apnea.

    (NAPS) More than 9.2 million

children are treated in the ER

    for nonfatal injuries every year,

    reports the Centers for Disease

    Control and Prevention but your

kids dont have to be among them.Youll be better able to protect

your youngsters if you and their

other caregivers learn a few skills

that could save a childs life.

    What You Can Do

    Fortunately, these are easier to

    acquire than many parents realize.

    Thats because the American

    Heart Association has created a

    new online course designed to

meet the training needs of child

    care providers while also being

    a comprehensive resource for

    parents, grandparents, teachers,

    babysitters or anyone responsible

    for the safety of children.

    What You Can Learn

    Combining online and hands-

    on components, this one-stop-shop

    course teaches child care providers

and parents critical first aid skills,

ranging from how to create a safe

    environment, to preventing injuries

in the first place, to lifesavingCPR.

    The course covers illnesses and

    injuries, bleeding and bandaging,

    allergic reactions and how to

    use an epinephrine pen, asthma,

    drowning, bites and stings, burns,

    choking, CPR, using an Automated

    External Defibrillator and how to

    help.What One Father Found

It is so easy to take a CPR

course. And it is so important to

For safetys sake, learn infant CPR, first aid

An online course can help parents

learn critical first aid skills, how to

create a safe environment, and how

    to perform life-saving CPR.

do, so that in a moment of panic,

you can still function, said Eli

Thomas, who was able to save his

    2-year-old from nearly drowning,

    thanks to American Heart

Association CPR training he tookat a company-organized retreat.

    The course is called Heartsaver

Pediatric First Aid CPR AED, and

it helps caregivers know how to

    respond to and manage illnesses

and injuries in a child or infant in

those first few vital minutes until

    professional help arrives.

    Doctors use many different

    methods to assess their patients

    health. Measuring the fat in

    a persons midsection is one

indicator physicians may relyon more heavily in the future as

    they look to pinpoint potential

    health risks before they become

    something more serious.

Belly fat is much more than an

eyesore, as it poses a serious health

risk doctors are only just beginning

to understand. A recent study on

belly fat presented at the European

    Society of Cardiology Congress

confirmed that belly fat is far moredangerous than many people think.

    Thats because a large stomach

    may not only be comprised

of subcutaneous fat, or the fat

    contained under the skin. Very

often visceral fat, or the type of

    fat that surrounds internal organs,

is a contributing factor to girth

    around the midsection. Visceral

    fat, also know as intra-abdominal

fat, is linked to a variety of

    health problems, including high

    triglycerides, high blood pressure,

    high cholesterol, and high blood

    sugar.Every person has some amount

of belly fat, even those with

    relatively flat abdominals. Visceral

    fat provides cushioning around the

organs and is actually beneficial in

    small amounts. Its when visceral

fat becomes too plentiful that it

can pose a problem. According to

    Kristen Hairston, MD, an assistant

    professor of endocrinology and

metabolism at the Wake ForestUniversity School of Medicine,

    visceral fat doesnt just sit dormant;

it plays an active role in the bodys

production of a number of potentially

    harmful substances. Researchers

are studying if visceral fat secretes

    inflammatory molecules in higher

amounts than other types of fat.

    These molecules can contribute to

    various health ailments.

Having a pear shape body shape can be safer than an apple shapewhere the waistline is larger. Belly fat is linked to a variety of health prob-lems.

The dangers of belly fat A persons ideal weight is not

    necessarily based on pounds on

    the scale. Rather, individuals

    should use other measurements to

determine propensity for belly fat.Having a pear shape where the

hips and thighs are larger than the

waist can actually be safer than an

    apple shape, where the waistline

    is larger.

    People concerned about belly

fat should use a measuring tape

to measure girth and determine if

there is a potential problem. Place

    the measuring tape around the

waist at the navel. The measuringtape should be level and stretch

    around the midsection. Women

    want a waist measurement of

less than 35 inches. Men should

measure in at less than 40 inches.

    Measurements that exceed those

    figures may indicate excessive

amounts of visceral fat. A hip-

    to-waist ratio measurement also

can be used. This ratio should be

below .85 for women and below

.90 for men. Anything higher is

considered at risk, and a person

    should consider losing belly fat.

The only precise way to measure

visceral belly fat is to get a CT

scan or an MRI. However, this is

expensive and may not be coveredby health insurance.

Its important to note that belly fat

is not a problem exclusive to those

    who are overweight. Although it

may not be as visible, thin people

can have excess visceral fat as

well. This is often the result of

eating a healthy diet but failing to

    exercise regularly.

There are ways to manage and

    reduce belly fat. Getting adequate

    exercise in conjunction with eating

a healthy diet, getting enough sleepand managing stress can help.

Losing belly fat can improve a

persons appearance and his or her

    overall health.

    Reminder: Checkyour childs car seat

    By Mary Kuhlman

    Ohio News Connection

COLUMBUS Your car will remindyou to check the oil, but experts say itsalso important to check whats carryingyour most precious cargo.

The Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) says child deaths in carcrashes have declined by 43 percent over 10years, but theres still work to do becausein one in three accidents that claimed thelife of a child age 12 or younger, the childwas not properly restrained.

    Erin Sauber-Schatz, the transportation

safety team lead in the Division ofUnintentional Injury Prevention at theCDC, says parent education and car-seat distribution help to make sure morechildren are buckled up properly.

Child passenger restraint laws thatincrease the age for car seat or booster seatuse result in getting more children buckledup, she says. In Ohio, children under age 4 must besecured in a car seat, and children from 4

to 8 must be either in a car seat or a boosterseat, unless they are at least 4 feet 9 inches

tall. A CDC report shows about 12 childrendie in car crashes each week in the UnitedStates. Health care providers also play a role inmaking sure children are safe in cars andtrucks, with Sauber-Schatz suggesting aconversation in the doctors office. And they can counsel parents andcaregivers at each well-child checkup touse age and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats and seat belts on every trip,

she explains. In general, the CDC recommends allchildren should ride in the back seat untilage 13.

Rear-facing car seats are for infants up toage 2. Front-facing seats are suitable from ages2 to 5. And booster seats are to be used until achild has grown enough for a seat belt to fitproperly across the chest and lap.

"They are more attentive than other places, so friendly. Therapists were

great and very easy to talk to, kept me on target. I felt like I knew the

staff all my life." Dorothy P.

"I came to The Gardens of Paulding after both my knee replacement

surgeries and it was nothing like what I thought it would be. I had

my own room. Nursing was right on top of my meds. The aides were

fantastic, they helped me day and night." Jacqueline Y.
