The new Bill will put more responsibility on the Principal, which could mean opting not to allow some activities which have the potential for injury such as climbing trees, playing physical sports and school camps and trips. This has the potential to change the whole philosophy of our school. The Vulnerable Children’s Act which came into force on 1 July 15 is another area the Board is looking closely at and seeking advice from the School Trustees Association. New rules mean people who work with children must undergo a safety check. Currently all of our staff including music teachers are police vetted. We are seeking clarification of how far we need to go in our checking. School camp parents will probably need to be vetted, which could spell the end of parents just turning up on camp and staying over. We have lots of parents who volunteer to help out at school and when a parent takes a car on a trip they are the primary caregiver while they have the children in their car. Do they need to be vetted? There is lots for the Board to ponder. Technology Trip

Jodie and I recently visited Mapua and Ranzau schools to look at how they are using technology in their schools.

We wanted to find out what was working well in their schools, what types of technology they using and how they

were being used

We are also visiting a couple of schools next week before final discussions with staff and a Schools IT

Consultant before putting an Information Technology spending proposal to the Board of Trustees.

Taupo Pt – Wainui Bay Trip

What an awesome day we had yesterday for our trip into the Abel Tasman National Park yesterday.

As well as great support from parents we were also supported by DOC staff and members of the Project Janszoon

team who were able to pass on their expertise and knowledge to the children.

Our Special Place - Wainui Bay - By Room 4

It felt like I was walking through the cool, misty air. I liked the native bird song, welcoming us to the National Park. Tara

The sun shimmered on the ice cold water. The mussels crunched on my feet. Maren

I heard the shrill sound of the silvereye, calling from the canopy. I was scribbling down in my notebook, about my five senses. Lola

I felt the cold wind, blowing on my face and the warm sun shining on my back. Bayleigh

The shiny sun, shone through the trees onto the bushes. I felt the soft sand sliding between my toes. Holley

I felt the soft, warm golden sand against my feet. Zeb

I saw the tiny shoots of little plants and the bright red tops of small mushrooms. I felt the fuzzy, rubbery tex-ture of the wood-ear fungus. Nicholas

I saw cute weka exploring and tiny grey warblers, doing a funny, bouncy dance in the tree canopy. Kier

I smelt wonderful, fresh air. I tasted the kawa kawa. It tasted like peppermints. I heard the river and the sea, crashing on the sand. Aliana

I heard tui singing a hello song to us. I saw cheeky weka dancing through the bush. Emily C

I felt the rough sand between my toes as I walked to my special place. When I reached it, I sat down, wondering about the boys and the fire they lit in 1978, while listening to a beautiful bellbird song. Jules

I heard the magical taniwha story. I wonder where it is now? Hayden

I felt the soft, crunchy sand on my bare feet. Noah

We quietly explored along the path...then the wekas called, and shattered the silence. I ate the leafy kawa kawa. It tasted strongly like some sort of tea. Arjuna

I saw the taniwhas cave. I explored inside. It felt creepy. It was full of sticks and penguin footprints. Iyla

When we got to our special place, the sun was glistening on a city of mussels, with shining blue shells. It looked amazing looking down from the top of a rock, that felt as high as the sky. Amalie
