Here’s what you need for your own homemade wax: • 3 tablespoons brown sugar• 1 tablespoon water• 3 tablespoons of lemon juice.

1Pour the sugar, water and lemon juice all together in a

saucepan, and heat it over a low flame. Keep stirring the mixture to avoid burning and stir it until all the sugar has melted. Let it cool slightly before using it and store it in a heat proof container for later use so you can warm it up on the microwave whenever you want to use it.

2 Apply this with a plastic knife or wooden stick in the

direction hair grows, then take a piece of cloth, press down firmly and then pull off in the direction of hair growth.

Tips to reduce the ‘Ouch!’

1 Draw in a deep breath through the nose, hold

for a few seconds, and exhale slowly and fully through the mouth. This effectively relaxes the body, including hair follicles, which makes them less constricted.

2Press hard on the affected area immediately after

the strip is pulled off. Applying pressure with the cushion of the finger on small areas or the palm of the hand on larger areas can result in a dramatic reduction in pain.

3 Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine at least a couple of

hours before your appointment. Instead, you can take a pain killer 30 to 60 minutes before the waxing procedure to control mild pain and inflammation.

1. HoneypotThis franchise wax boutique from Singapore has been established in Jakarta for three years and has all the waxing services you could ever ask for. Their signature wax is the Brazilian, with six types of shapes: basic bikini, the in between, the butterfly, Hollywood, playboy and l’amour (Rp. 125,000-Rp.325,000). They use strawberry wax for the general waxing and hot waxes made of cherry, apricot and jasmine essential oils for the sensitive area to minimize the pain.

Before they start the procedure, they will let you change your clothes with a provided Kimono first. The waxing fairies (that’s what they call their therapists) don’t double dip and, if necessary, they tweeze instead of thread the leftover hairs.

CaramelloStarted in 2009, Caramello provides natural hair removal services via sugar-waxing and threading at affordable prices (upper body wax Rp.35,000-Rp.70,000; lower body wax Rp.50,000-Rp.85,000; face wax Rp.20,000-Rp.30,000, and full body Rp.395,000) with 20 per cent additional fees for male customers.

The treatment is as quick as you would hope for thanks to their skilful therapists. They use caramel-based wax and threading, the Persian style hair-removal technique which is a wee bit itchy and requires you to hold the skin while the therapist does the threading. And since they don’t provide hard-wax for the sensitive area, you might have to deal with a brief moment of pain there.

There are only four beds divided by clean curtains for the treatment, so due to the high-traffic of customers, you might want to make an appointment first before you walk-in for the service. StripStrip is renowned as the first waxing parlour in Jakarta for its HSQ (Hygiene, Speed and Quality) mantra where there is absolutely no double dipping and each customer receives their personal hygiene wax pack. The wax options are lavender-based for body wax (Rp.35,000-Rp.275,000) and berry chocolate-based wax for more sensitive parts (Rp.90,000-Rp.340,000). These waxes can remove hairs as short as 6mm .

The treatment room is spacey and comfortable and the therapists, or Strip-erellas as they’re referred to here, were trained by trainers from Singapore to perform a quick, safe and pain-less wax in 15 minutes flat. But if you’re not sure about the pain you’re going through, Strip provides cute squeezable animal toys for you to release the pain, which you can also bring home for Rp.75,000.
