With Streaming Players, Viewers Get To Choose

Many believe today’s television viewers have it better than ever. That’s because they have access to a wider selection

of in-home entertainment than ever before—and many are choosing to watch TV on demand.

Some say the change in TV-viewing preferences can be attributed to the growing popularity of affordable, easy-to-use streaming players. In fact, according to an October 2012 survey conducted by Harris Interactive, 53 percent of Americans are streaming entertainment. For 18−35-year-olds, streaming nearly ties live TV time.

Streaming players are a simple and affordable way to access entertainment on your TV. For example, the Roku system connects to your TV and home network so you can start streaming in a matter of minutes. After your show is selected, it plays instantly on your TV. No need to huddle over a laptop, find a DVD or set the DVR.

Streaming players can turn virtually any TV into a “smart TV.” Roku offers a range of streaming

players that offer more than 600 channels of entertainment including popular subscription services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, on-demand video services such as Amazon Instant Video and VUDU, as well as many free channels like

Crackle. Beyond movies and TV shows, there is a wealth of services featuring news, sports, spirituality, fitness, cooking and more.

Given the abundance of entertainment available on demand every day, there are endless choices to make when it comes to what you decide to watch. Here are some tips:

• The Roku search tool makes it possible to find not only movies and show titles, but also the work of specific actors and directors that fit your taste. The tool shows you where the results are available on the Roku platform—whether it’s Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, VUDU or HBO GO.

• You can join a current hot show that’s in mid-season by “marathoning” past seasons or catching up on episodes. It’s estimated as many as 30 percent of Roku Facebook fans have previously watched an entire season of a favorite TV show in one sitting.

• Think about favorite actors or past shows that you can match to currently

available movies or shows. For example, “Lost” fans may want to check out “Once Upon a Time” since it’s from the same writers, while Claire Danes fans can catch up on her career by watching “Homeland.” (NAPSI)

As the tax environment changes, so too should investment strategies.

That’s the word from experts who warn that the current capital gains tax laws are changing. Additionally, studies have shown the “tax drag” to be cyclical, meaning there are certain times when it’s bigger than others. Right now, a new and potentially harsher cycle appears to be under way.

“While tax-managed investing is important in any environment, it’s particularly important today because investors are going to be hit hard by both rising capital gains distributions and higher tax rates moving for-ward,” says Duncan W. Richardson, Chief Equity Investment Officer for Eaton Vance Management.

He believes understanding the potential risks and rewards associated with these changes can offer investors a number of strategic benefits.

Historically, equities have provided a higher after-tax (and inflation-ad-justed) return than any other asset class. They have been one of the best defenses against taxes and inflation.

Yet active tax management remains an important factor to consider. The growth of tax-deferred vehicles in the 1980s led many investment managers to change how they managed portfolios. “There was no tax cost for tax-deferred investors of having a high portfolio turnover rate, so little attention was paid to keeping turnover low,” says Richardson. “For the large number of investors who have assets in taxable accounts, that can translate into a significant tax drag.”

One of the best ways to effectively manage taxes is to maintain a long-term perspective. Richardson says he prefers a holding period of “five years to forever” to let winners run and help ensure gains are taxed at the lowest possible rate. He recommends keeping “bad” or unnecessary turnover low to minimize transaction costs and short-term capital gains. Additionally, harvesting capital losses in a disciplined fashion, following “wash sale” rules, following holding period rules to have any dividends taxed at the lower qualified dividend income rate, and using tax-advan-

taged hedging techniques may all improve after-tax returns even further.

This may seem like a lot of extra work, but according to Lipper (a mutual fund services company), the average taxable equity mutual fund investor can lose as much as a quarter or more of every dollar of their annual returns to taxes. Employing equity mutual funds managed with after-tax returns as their objective may help investors “keep the quar-ter,” as Richardson says, thanks to the tax-efficient techniques these funds practice.

Tax efficiency is particularly important in today’s environment, he says, because the market has more than doubled over the last three years, increasing the likelihood of more capital gains distributions from mutual funds.

“Regardless of tax cuts or extensions, massive deficits at the federal, state and local levels suggest that taxes may eventually have nowhere to go but up,” Richardson says. “That’s a risk most investors can’t afford to ignore.”

Navigating this changing tax environment can be challenging, mak-ing it more important than ever for investors to seek professional guid-ance. Eaton Vance has a decades-long history of offering mutual funds and wealth management solutions designed to help maximize investors’ after-tax returns.

“We sharpened our focus on tax management and significantly ex-panded our tax-efficient equity fund lineup in the late 1990s and early 2000s to fill what we saw as a big void in the industry, and most impor-tantly, to help our clients maximize their after-tax returns,” Richardson says.

Today, Eaton Vance offers a strong lineup of tax-managed equity mu-tual funds that cover multiple asset classes and market capitalizations, along with a broad range of tax-exempt municipal and tax-advantaged bond strategies. To learn more, visit www.eatonvance.com. (NAPSI)

When it comes to high-tech holiday gifts, experts remind those who received a new laptop, smartphone or tablet as a gift this holiday to avoid being swept away by the feeling of “newpho-

ria.”

That’s the term the security-conscious professionals at Norton by Sy-mantec use to describe the state of joy people experience after receiving a new gadget. They urge consumers to remember that just because a device is new doesn’t necessarily mean it’s secure.

“When consumers rush to adopt the latest high-tech gadget, security is often an afterthought. It’s important to secure your device to protect your investment as well as your personal data,” says Marian Merritt, Internet safety advocate with Norton by Symantec.

To help, Merritt offers these tips:

• Make sure your new mobile device is PIN-protected, insured and that you have downloaded a security app such as Norton 360 Multi-Device, which can protect all your devices including laptops, PCs, Macs, smart-phones and tablets.

• Always use reputable websites with secure pages when shopping on-line. You can tell whether a Web page is secure from the padlock icon lo-cated in the browser address bar on pages where you are entering financial information like your credit card. Make sure the website address includes “https” and that the browser address bar is highlighted in green.

• Keep your security software up-to-date. Cybercriminals are more so-phisticated than ever before and they’ll jump on any social trend to spread

malware and steal your personal details.

• Be smart—use a unique, complex password for each online account you have and update your passwords regularly. Avoid using the “Remem-ber My Password” option on websites in case your device is lost or stolen. (NAPSI)

Before “Newphoria” Strikes, Experts Advise to Protect your new Device

For most teenagers today, the environment is too important to be ig-nored—yet, according to a recent study conducted by Harris Interac-tive, nearly 75 percent of 14- to 18-year-olds believe kids their age

are not taking enough action to increase their knowledge of and help solve envi-ronmental issues we face.

As a result, students are actively seek-ing out environmental information and resources on their own. While 56 per-cent of students reported their class-rooms as a source of environmental information, the majority (67 percent) actually turn to commercials and tele-vision as an environmental resource, while less than half (47 percent) use newspapers and magazines.

As environmental issues continue to play a role in daily life, it’s important to ensure that students have their questions and comments addressed in a classroom setting. An education that incorporates environmental topics does not have to be limited to just a science class. The environment now more than ever crosses over various subjects and topics, from geography to math to economics. Increasing students’ knowledge and access to information on ever-chang-ing issues will enable them to translate what they learn in a classroom to future aspirations and career choices.

In addition to seeking out environmental information and programs, the survey found, a strong majority are willing to recycle (85 percent) and turn off unnecessary lights (85 percent) to help with environmental conser-

vation, while nearly three in five would also be willing to spend less time in the shower (57 percent) and volunteer to help clean up public areas, such as a beach or a park (56 percent).

When asked if they would be will-ing to lower their usage of a computer, however, teens were slightly less en-thusiastic--only 28 percent volunteered to power off.

One company that understands the importance of environmental educa-tion, Canon U.S.A., has always made it a top priority. That’s why it spon-sors the North American Envirothon, a hands-on high school competition that encourages students to solve en-vironmental situations in teams. Now in its 25th year, this annual competi-tion brings together more than 500,000

high school students from across the United States and Canada to compete for the best solutions to real-life environmental challenges. (NAPSI)

For many, the constant deadlines and demands of modern life can be a recipe for stress. While some find the holidays to be a stressful time, the chaotic feelings brought about by present wrapping, party

throwing, constant family togetherness and shopping for gifts can actu-ally linger long after the holidays are over, with stress striking anytime of the year.

The good news is that there are several simple ways you can start to manage the daily stress in your life. In addition to getting enough sleep and monitoring your food, alcohol and caffeine intake during the party-heavy holiday season, research has shown that making time for exercise and fun can go a long way in relieving stress during the holidays and beyond.

One easy and convenient way to steal away for a few minutes of fun is to go online to EA’s popular games website Pogo.com, where you can access games such as Poppit! and First Class Solitaire, all for free.

The site offers hundreds of online games for free, including puzzles, board games, word games, card games and more.

There are also arcade games and a chance to register and play online with friends, giving players a unique way to de-stress and connect with faraway friends and family members.

A Chance To Play Away Stress It doesn’t matter if you are feeling solitary or social, traditional or quirky—the site is likely to offer a game that will fit your mood and will help you melt away stress. (NAPSI)
