April 10, 2013 – Albuquerque, New Mexico has been named by priceline.com as the number one place in America for people traveling with their pets. This ranking comes as a result of the city’s high number of pet-friendly hotels, off-leash dog parks and overall walkability. “People love their pets and many can’t imagine traveling without them,” said priceline.com’s Chief Marketing Ofcer Brett Keller. “But not all cities and hotels are created equal when it comes to accommodating four- legged friends. We’ve created this list as a guide to help travelers nd the best experiences no matter who’s along for the ride.” A great place to start that ride with your pet in Albuquerque - Route 66. Beautiful spring temperatures pave the way for a relaxing stroll with Fido down Central Avenue, formerly known as Route 66, here in Albuquerque. Everything from dog boutiques and groomers to pet-friendly lodging is accessible along the city’s main drag. Local Flying Star restaurants also offer great petios around town. “Whether you are exploring the Downtown Growers Market or shopping at one of our local establishments, you will encounter people enjoying what our city has to offer with their pets,” said Dale Lockett, President & CEO of the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau. “They are part of our everyday lives here, and we are thrilled that priceline.com has recog- nized Albuquerque at the top of their pet-friendly destination list.” Around the city, Albuquerque residents and visitors enjoy 13 dog parks, many pet-friendly lodging options and a handful of great dog-friendly hik- ing trails like those at Elena Gallegos Picnic Area and Petroglyph National Monument. Each November, Animal Humane New Mexico puts on its largest fundraiser and signature event at Balloon Fiesta Park called the Doggie Dash & Dawdle that welcomes locals and visitors alike. Albuquerque topped the list of ten great pet-friendly cities across Ameri- ca including Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas. See the complete release here. Creating Worth From WasteThere’s genuine excitement in rural America about what to many

may seem a surprising subject: livestock manure. That’s because farmers can get improved nutrient effi ciency from it as a natural fer-

tilizer source, the animal waste is easier to handle and apply, and some of the odors associated with release of ammonia gas are being reduced—all thanks to some recent technology available to livestock producers.

When farmers have hundreds or thousands of hogs or dairy or beef cattle, millions of tons of waste are generated that must be managed in an environmentally sound way. In most cases, the manure is held in pits or lagoons before being applied to fi elds as a rich source of vital nutrients such as phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), both of which are essential to crop growth and health.

Technology Benefi ts

The recently developed technology that helps livestock producers man-age all this waste more effi ciently is More Than Manure® (MTM®) Nu-trient Manager, from SFP®, a company that specializes in products that improve fertilizer effi ciency. When added to in-ground manure pits and lagoons, MTM can help break up “solids,” making the manure easier to pump, transport and apply. It can also signifi cantly reduce ammonia levels both in livestock confi nement areas and on the fi elds where manure is ap-plied.

For example, take Dean Strauss, who milks roughly 1,900 cows at two Wisconsin locations. He recently tried the product, applying it in and around manure pits and through the direct system that pumps into the pits. “It cut the odor dramatically,” Strauss said. “Anything we can do to ad-dress odor issues is good for our workers and our cows, and it helps us be better neighbors to the people who live close to our farming operation.”

In a short time following application, Strauss witnessed a breaking up of crusts and solids in the pits. “The uniformity of the manure for spread-ing was greatly improved,” he added. “I know we are now getting a better distribution of nutrients across the soil.”

Better Crop Yields

This technology can also help improve nutrient effi ciency and plant uptake of P and N from manure used as fertilizer, which leads to better overall crop health and yield increases. Reducing the amount of P that gets locked up in the soil and N losses due to leaching, volatilization and denitrifi cation makes more of both elements available for crop use.

Consider Jack Wyttenbach, a hog producer who has about 1,500 sows and fi nishes about 25,000 hogs a year. He has experienced a yield increase of 8 bushels per acre on fi elds of corn fertilized with manure that was treated with MTM. “This yield increase is due to improved nutrient ef-fi ciency and uptake,” he said.

Wyttenbach also tries to be environmentally proactive about livestock odors that can wear thin on neighbors. “We’ve seen a dramatic reduction in the amount of ammonia gas coming off the manure after using MTM,” he observed. - (NAPSI)

Growing Bones Need Vitamin DChildren need vitamin D for strong bones and muscles. While some

can be found in food, the nutrient is mostly made by your body when your skin is exposed to sunlight. A vitamin D defi ciency can hurt a child’s musculoskeletal system, according to the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative.

“A vitamin D defi ciency in growing children can keep their bones from growing straight or it can make bones too weak to support a child’s body weight, resulting in broken bones,” explained Ellen Raney, M.D., of Shri-ners Hospitals for Children—Portland.

Symptoms Severe vitamin D defi ciency is becoming prevalent, however. Signs include growth that’s severely stunted, arms and legs that don’t grow straight, and bones that are weak and easily broken.

Why It Happens There are a number of reasons: • Decreased outdoor activities • Constant use of sunscreen while outside • Limited availability of vitamin D−rich foods. It’s found in fi sh such as salmon and in cod liver oil and fortifi ed foods such as milk, breakfast cereals and some brands of juice, yogurt or margarine. You want to look for foods with a Daily Value (DV) of 20 percent or more. A good diet is important but it may not be enough.

What To Do To help, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a daily in-take of 400 IU a day of vitamin D during the fi rst year of life beginning in the fi rst few days of life. The Institute of Medicine says children and adolescents need a daily intake of at least 600 IU per day. Your doctor can determine the correct amount of vitamin D for your children and what, if any, changes to make to their diet.

Fortunately, vitamin D is readily available by itself in child-friendly forms, such as gummy vitamins or liquid and in children’s multivitamins with 60 to 400 IU of vitamin D. Just remember, taking several multivita-mins a day to get more vitamin D is not wise, as too much of other vita-mins can be harmful.

A New Way To Treat Children With Chronic Pain

There’s good news for children who experience chronic pain. A new approach to pain care will fi nally offer relief for young patients and

their families.

It’s estimated that 25 to 46 percent of children and teens experience chronic pain: serious pain on a daily basis over the course of three months or more. Most children and teens who seek help see, on average, four to fi ve medical specialists—or even more—plus have multiple, expensive tests without answers for why they hurt, before they fi nd the care they need. All of this adds up to lost school days and lost workdays for their parents, which can create signifi cant fi nancial burdens on families.

To help ease pain for children, the Pain Medicine Care Complex at Chil-dren’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., has developed an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to addressing pain that is helping patients achieve a higher quality of life.

The pain medicine team has incorporated new interactive video games that distract patients from their pain, while also collecting important data about their movements and response to treatment. According to Sarah Rebstock, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Director of the Pain Medicine Program and a Principal Investigator of the Sheikh Zayed Institute, these “medi-cally meaningful” video games provide digital medical data collection for the fi rst time ever, which enables better short-term pain management and long-term research. The games are based on proven physical therapy ac-tivities and help patients build their range of motion. Additionally, when it comes to treating pain, the Pain Medicine Care Complex tailors treatments based on the unique needs of each patient. These treatments can include traditional pain medicines when appropriate or complementary therapies

including psychological support, acupuncture, massage and biofeedback.

The video games were developed jointly between Interface Media Group and the Pain Medicine Initiative of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediat-ric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National. The games take patients through a series of exercises and activities based on current physical thera-py techniques. Some of the games create the feeling of being in a futuristic Olympic sports event. Others, designed for very young children, create the feeling of painting large pictures. The interactive aspect of the games includes proprietary software that gathers patient data to track improved range of motion.

The Pain Medicine Care Complex also includes a high-tech, interactive POD bed designed by interior designer Alberto Frias, which serves as a biofeedback environment for the patient. The POD bed reduces anxiety and tension for patients, a common symptom of children with chronic pain.

Finally, state-of-the-art teleconference and telemedicine technology al-lows the pain medicine experts at Children’s National to help diagnose and treat patients beyond Washington, D.C., and around the world.

The Pain Medicine Care Complex is part of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National in Washington, D.C. The Institute was launched in 2009 with a gift from the government of Abu Dhabi on behalf of the people. This was the largest gift ever given for innovation in pediatric surgery. The Institute conducts research that will help children all over the world, and is specifi cally dedicated to mak-ing surgery more precise, less invasive and pain free. - (NAPSI)

Spruce Up Your System And Save While You Sprinkle

Spring may have sprung, but is your sprinkler ready? Before you ramp up your watering this season, it might be time to spruce up your sprin-

klers to stop wasting water, save money, and promote a healthy lawn or garden. If you have an irrigation system, chances are it has been dormant for the past several months and could use some maintenance to get in shape for

If your family is like some 75 percent of households across the United States, you want to get at least one piece of furniture for your outdoor

living space this year, reports furniture design expert Jackie Hirschhaut. When selecting pieces to enhance their backyards and gardens, hom-eowners said the most desired new furnishings include a chair or chaise lounge, umbrella, dining table, outdoor lighting, fi re pit, pillows, outdoor rug or hammock. The most prevalent product designs point to transitional and soft con-temporary styling, with an abundance of soft curves and straight lines. Collections are enhanced with pieces designed for function, including storage ottomans and wedges, sofa tables and serving stations. The most popular outdoor furnishings these days refl ect a range of wood, synthetic weaves and sturdy aluminum as well as a dynamic use of mixed materi-als. Sustainably harvested teak, mahogany and South American hardwoods, including eucalyptus, are found in rich natural warm tones as well as weathered gray hues. Following a popular decorating style in interiors, a number of furniture lines are using reclaimed teak. Interestingly, a number of seating and table frames are crafted of aluminum fi nished with a faux wood grain. All-weather wicker is constructed from synthet-ic materials formed into strands of various shapes and sizes, and woven in a range of patterns. Fashionable alternative tabletops include leather and acrylic stone. Pointing to a sense of optimism and brighter, livelier days ahead, outdoor fabrics and fi nishes include bold pops of color for this season’s outdoor spaces. These graffi ti brights include lime green, tangerine orange

the spring and summer growing season. A home with an automatic irriga-tion system that isn’t properly programmed or maintained can waste as much as 30,000 gallons of water annually! Take a few minutes to check your system for common problems such as leaks or malfunctioning sprinkler heads. In fact, just one broken sprinkler head could waste up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season-the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs. To get started, follow these four simple steps-inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro-look for an ir-rigation professional certifi ed through a WaterSense labeled irrigation pro-gram to help maintain your system. • Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes or hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Experts estimate that as much as half of the water we use out-doors is being wasted due to evaporation, wind or runoff caused by inef-fi cient irrigation methods and systems. Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants, not your driveway or sidewalk! • Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons, or select a Water-Sense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Properly maintained irrigation systems are the key to healthy landscapes and outdoor water savings. So remember to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring-cleaning list this year! - (NAPSI)

and vivid blue, from turquoise to azure. Innovative fi nishes refl ect a turn toward metallics, with bronze, brushed steel and copper dominating. These hues are much more sophisticated than the “industrial” trend seen in indoor fi nishes. Fabrics to complement these frames favor grayed neutrals plus sunset orange and gold. Finally, an Americana theme seems to be emerging, characterized by navy blue, barn red and khaki. Navy blue is frequently seen matched with a crisp white frame—whether wicker, high-gloss aluminum, painted wood or faux wood. - (NAPSI)

If you’re like 25 percent of grill owners, you can expect to host fi ve or more barbecues in the next few months, according to the new Weber Grill Watch Survey. So now may be the right time to brush up on the

do’s and don’ts of grilling.

To help, New York Times best-selling author and James Beard Award nominee Jamie Purviance reveals his Top 10 Grilling Do’s and Don’ts from his latest cookbook, “Weber’s New Real Grilling”:

1. Do preheat the grill. If cooking grates aren’t hot enough, food will stick and won’t have a chance of searing properly or developing grill marks. Even if a recipe calls for medium or low heat, you should preheat the grill on high fi rst to at least 500° F.

2. Don’t start with dirty grates. Leftover “stuff” on the grates acts like glue, binding both your new food to the old and all of it to the grates. After preheating the grill for about 10 minutes, brush the grates off with a sturdy, long-handled brush with stainless steel bristles. Clean grates will provide a smooth surface to perfectly grill steaks, burgers, chicken and more.

3. Do get your act together. Bring everything you need near the grill be-fore grilling. If you have to run back into the kitchen while your food is cooking, you might overcook or burn the food.

4. Do give yourself at least two heat zones. If you set up your grill for one type of heat only, your options are limited. Have at least two heat zones: one for direct heat (where the fi re is right under the food) and one for indi-rect heat (where the fi re is off to the side of the food). Many foods, such as steaks, are seared quickly over direct heat and then fi nished over indirect.

5. Don’t overcrowd the grill. Packing too much food into a tight space re-stricts your fl exibility. Leave at least a quarter of the cooking grates clear, with plenty of space between food for easy maneuverability.

6. Do use the lid. When the lid is closed, the cooking grates are hotter, the grilling times are faster, the smoky tastes are stronger and the fl are-ups are fewer. So put a lid on it. Just don’t forget to open the charcoal grill’s lid vent at least halfway to allow proper airfl ow.

7. Don’t touch the food much. Most people like food seared to a deep brown color with plenty of beautifully charred bits. The trouble is, many move their food so often it doesn’t get enough time in one place to reach that color and fl avor. In nearly all cases, turn food just once or twice.

8. Do take charge of the fi re. A charcoal fi re climbs to its hottest tempera-tures fi rst and then loses heat either quickly or slowly, depending on the type of charcoal and how you tend the fi re. Refuel before losing too much heat, rearrange coals, sweep away the ashes that could clog the bottom vents, and adjust the vents on the lid for ideal airfl ow.

9. Don’t serve rubbery chicken. If you specialize in chicken breasts so overcooked they bounce, it’s time to learn some doneness clues. A cor-rectly grilled chicken breast should gently yield when you press the sur-face with your fi ngertip. Get an instant-read thermometer for an even more reliable test of doneness.

10. Do use the grill for more than grilling. It used to be that grilling meant one thing: meat charred over open fl ames. Today, everything from appetiz-ers through desserts can be prepared on a grill. - (NAPSI)
