How Honest Abe Built Banks To Save

America

Many Americans may be surprised to learn a little-known fact about Abraham Lincoln that may still be helping them today.

If you’re like most people, you think of a bank as a place to safely store your money or to get a loan. Modern banks do provide such services, but there’s more to the story—and to their history.

Then

President Abraham Lincoln saw banks as vital to an America prosperous, united and strong.

In 1863, while the Civil War was tearing the country apart, Lincoln feared that the dream of America as a model of opportunity for all humanity might be lost. So Lincoln and Congress worked to knit the country back together.

They sponsored railroads, which reached places unserved by other de-pendable transportation at the time.

They donated federal lands for colleges, not for the elite but for the many, to promote practical science. From these laboratories came ideas that helped farmers make the prairies bloom “with amber waves of grain.” The new railroads brought that grain, and lots more, to the millions of people in cities, east and west. Farmers prospered and so did consumers.

Information, has detailed information about fi ling statuses. • If you have your refund direct deposited, check the routing and account numbers on your return. An incorrect number can mean several extra weeks of waiting for your refund, someone else getting your money or the refund going back to the IRS.

Just remember to pay the taxes owed by April 15 to avoid late-fi ling penalties and interest fees. If you can’t afford to pay what you owe, call the IRS to discuss installment plans, payment options, extended time to pay and other assistance.

Another all too common mistake is paying too much to do your taxes. Fortunately, taxpayers can prepare, print and e-fi le federal tax returns free at www.taxact.com—no restrictions, no bait and switch.

Over time, they began to see that their futures were tied together.

Building a nation required a robust fi nancial system. It demanded a com-mon currency that a nation could exchange with confi dence. That’s why Lincoln and Congress created a new system of national banks to power the nation’s economic engine.

Lincoln knew that banks had to operate under strict rules and oversight. To administer this system of banks, he created an independent regulator—the Offi ce of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)—to keep banks safe and sound and make sure they obeyed the laws, so they could support business, consumers and communities.

Now

Today, Lincoln’s federal banking system includes nearly 2,000 national banks and federal savings associations. Most are community banks. They continue to play an important role in the nation’s economy by provid-ing savings, credit and fi nancing to support businesses, communities and families across the country. - (NAPSI)

Baby Budget Cuts You Don’t Want To Make

From diapers and day care to luxury strollers and irresistible pint-size fashions, a new baby can cost a bundle. Of course, there are ways to stretch your budget—and plenty of not-so-smart ways to save, too. In

fact, put these cost-cutters on the no-no list, says Sandra Gordon, one of the nation’s leading baby products experts and author of “Save a Bundle: 50+ Ways to Save Big on Baby Gear.” “They can jeopardize your baby’s health and safety, which should always be your top priority.”

Buying a used car seat. Although there are many baby items you can bor-row or buy secondhand, don’t make a car seat one of them if you can avoid it. A used seat may have been in a crash or recalled. The manufacturer’s in-structions may be missing. You’ll need them to install the car seat properly, which is crucial for keeping your baby safe on the road.

Getting a great crib deal on the Internet. Sure, you can probably get a used crib for next to nothing from a secondhand seller. It may not meet the latest safety standards, however. Updated federal crib regulations stopped the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs, made crib mattress supports stronger, the hardware more durable and safety testing more rigorous. To ensure your baby sleeps safely, buy a new crib, made after June 2011. By law, it must have stationary sides, with no moving parts that can potentially malfunction.

Selecting the cheapest crib mattress. Babies need the support of a fi rm mattress for their growing bones and to reduce the risks of SIDS. Many par-ents just buy the lowest-priced crib mattress they can fi nd, which tends to be mushy. Aim to spend around $150 on this item, either foam or innerspring.

Stretching infant formula with extra water. Diluted formula won’t meet your baby’s nutritional needs and can cause water intoxication, which is po-tentially deadly. To safely save money, you can buy Store Brand Formulas, such as Walmart’s Parent’s Choice and Target’s Up & Up, and prepare them

exactly according to label directions. Store Brand Formulas offer the same complete nutrition as name-brand formulas and, according to a recent study, have been clinically proven to be as well tolerated. Store Brand Formulas cost up to 50 percent less than name-brand formulas, helping parents save hundreds of dollars a year. - (NAPSI)
