In the United States, 8.3% of the population, 25.8 millionadults and children, have diabetes and one-fourth of thesepeople do not know they have it.For many, diagnosis comes 7 to10 years after the onset of thedisease.

1.9 million new cases of diabetes werediagnosed in people aged 20 years andolder in 2010. Diabetes is the seventhleading cause of death in the United Statesand can cause serious health complicationsincluding heart disease, blindness, kidneyfailure, and lower-extremity amputations.However, early detection and treatment ofdiabetes can prevent or delay many of thecomplications associated with the disease.

Scientists have determined that the feelingsof happiness associated with doing good can betraced to a particular pleasure center of thebrain that can be viewed and measured withbrain scans. There are physical components todoing thoughtful or charitable things, accord-ing to a 2008 report in The New York Times.

This bodes well for donations as the reces-sion continues to hit the country in a big way.Individuals who are facing layoffs or pay cutsmay still dig deep into their pockets for chari-table donations because they seek the high thatdonating provides.

And it isn't just financial donations thatmake a person happy. Any type of goodwilltoward others is a way to generate the endor-phins and mood-boosting properties of altru-ism. That means there are plenty of opportuni-ties that can boost feelings of happiness.

* During the holiday season, write a "Letterfrom Santa" to a less fortunate child andinclude a gift card to a toy store so that he orshe can get a treat.

* Visit seniors in a retirement communityor assisted living facility and sit and chat for awhile.

* Knock on an elderly neighbor's door andfind out if you can help out with any choresaround the house.

* Bring a friend breakfast or lunch simplybecause you were thinking of them and want-ed to surprise them.

* Take in the trash cans for your entirestreet, especially if the weather is nasty.

* Tell a fast-food employee or another hardworker that they're doing a good job.Complaints come easy in the service industry,but praise is often hard to get.

* Volunteer to watch neighborhood chil-dren so other mothers and fathers can get amuch-needed break.

* Don't ignore a phone solicitation from acharity organization. Get more informationand do your best to donate.

* If you practice a religion, go to yourhouse of worship and participate in communi-ty togetherness.

* Hold a door, smile at someone or offer toget something down from a tall shelf in a store.It's the little things that can bring pleasure.

* Share something you have with anotherperson who doesn't. That may mean genera-tor-supplied electric power during a power out-age, a special snack at school lunch, a tool, apiece of clothing or whatever you can think of.

There are so many ways to give to others,and one of the biggest benefits is the smilesand positive feelings giving provides.

The history of CardiopulmonaryResuscitation dates all the way back to1740. Back then, the Paris Academy ofSciences officially recommended mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for drowning vic-tims. However, CPR as we know it todayinvolves more than just mouth-to-mouthresuscitation. Chest compressions are nowan important part of performing CPR, butit was not until 1891 that Dr. FriedrichMaass performed the first documentedchest compression in humans. What'smore, the first successful use of external

chest compressions in human resuscitationdid not occur until 1903. Even then, itwas not until more than half a centurylater that CPR was developed. In 1960,the American Heart Association began aprogram to acquaint physicians with close-chest cardiac resuscitation. Three yearslater, after cardiologist Leonard Scherlisstarted the American Heart Association'sCPRCommittee, the association formallyendorsed CPR as a means to saving lives.Nowadays, the AmericanHeartAssociation reports that effectivebystander CPR, when provided immedi-ately after sudden cardiac arrest, can dou-ble or triple a victim's chance of survival.

If you are one of the millions of Americanswith a long-term health condition like asthma,diabetes, stroke, heart or lung disease, thisimportant information about flu applies toyou. When combined with your existinghealth condition, the flu increases your risk ofbecoming seriously sick, which could result inan unexpected and expensive trip to the hospi-tal -- or even death.

"We have known for years that flu is a seri-ous disease, especially for people with certainchronic health conditions," said Dr. AnneSchuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of theU.S. Public Health Service and CDC'sDirector of the National Center forImmunization and Respiratory Diseases.

These health conditions include asthma(even if controlled by medication), lung dis-ease, heart disease, neurologic conditions (likestroke and other conditions related to thenervous system, brain or spinal cord), blooddisorders, endocrine disorders (like diabetes,both type 1 and type 2), kidney disorders, liverdisorders, or weakened immune systems.

The burden of flu on people with theseconditions was demonstrated last flu season, asthe world faced its first flu pandemic in morethan 40 years. Most of the deaths from 2009H1N1 were in people who had at least onehealth condition. People with long-termhealth conditions also were more likely to behospitalized. CDC estimates that nearly 60percent of children and more than 85 percentof adults hospitalized with 2009 H1N1 hadone or more long-term health conditions orwere pregnant.

Of those admitted to the hospital with

2009 H1N1 illness, asthma was the mostcommon long-term health condition, fol-lowed by diabetes, chronic cardiovascular dis-ease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,pregnancy, neurological disorders (includingstroke or seizure disorders in adults), and neu-romuscular disorders. People who were mor-bidly obese (extremely overweight) alsoappeared to be at higher risk for severe 2009H1N1 in some studies.

Experts expect that 2009 H1N1 will beback next season along with other, regular fluviruses. The message is clear: people withlong-term health conditions should takeaction to protect themselves against the flu bygetting a flu vaccine. This season's vaccine willprotect against 2009 H1N1 and two other fluviruses. Safe, reliable flu vaccines have beenmade for decades, and you cannot get the flufrom the flu vaccine.

Millions of Americans are impacted bythese conditions, although many people don'tknow that they have a long-term health condi-tion. For example, diabetes impacts an esti-mated 23.6 million Americans, but 5.7 mil-lion people (24 percent of those who have thedisease in the United States) don't even knowthey have it. Heart disease affects an estimated26.6 million Americans. And asthma affects23.4 million Americans. Ask your doctorwhether you have a health condition thatmakes you more vulnerable to flu. If you do,be sure you get a flu vaccine.
