Insanity has come to the FitnessFactory in Monticello, in the formof Liberty native Julie Goodman

Kaufman.No, not that kind of “insanity.”Insanity – a product of fitness con-

glomerate Beachbody, the creators ofthe popular P-90X fitness program- isbilled in a company leaflet as “a revo-lutionary cardio-based total-bodyconditioning program based on the

principals of MAX Interval Training.”MAX Interval Training allows an

individual, according to company lit-erature, “to beat the ‘stress adaptationresponse’ which normally happenswhen your body gets used to exercis-ing at one level of exertion.”

Kaufman says she started usingInsanity at home four years agothrough Beachbody’s at home DVDprogram, and, “I just became a hugeadvocate for it… I had tremendous

results. It literally is insane.”Kaufman would discover that

Beachbody actually offered an Insan-ity certification program. “I realizedright then that this was somethingthat I just had to bring to Fitness Fac-tory.”

After completing her certificationKaufman approached Fitness Factoryowner Mike Dollard and said, “I thinkthat this [Insanity] is going to be real-ly popular here.… I started the pro-gram here in January and its been

great.”Kaufman’s class, which began as a

once a week offering, is now offeredboth Tuesdays and Thursdays from5–5:30 p.m. and regularly attractsmore than 20 participants at a time.“And a lot of those are actually regu-lars who come twice-a-week,” offeredKaufman.

Explaining the benefits of Insanity,Kaufman said, “The high intensityinterval training actually gets your

heartbeat up for two minutes andthen you spend a 30-second cooldown period bringing that heartbeatback down. You actually burn themost amount of calories possible injust 30-minutes in this class becauseof the high intensity interval trainingaspect. You actually continue to burncalories for up to 24-hours after theclass so the benefits are definitely pal-

pable.”Insanity isn’t Kaufman’s only contri-

decision to switch over from BodyTraining Systems’ (BTS) Group PowerProgram, to become a Les Mills certi-fied gym.

“Les Mills has far more brandrecognition and is actually the largestgroup fitness company in the world,”

explained Kaufman. “[Les Mills BodyPump] works the entire body using abar-bell holding as much or as littleweight as the user can hold.”

Kaufman, along with fellow instruc-tors Lauren Kolvenbach, Sheri Mirrosand Maria Pappas, teaches the disci-pline Mondays and Wednesdays at9:15 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.; as well as on

Saturdays and Sundays at 9:15 a.m. “We’re the only gym in the area

who offers these two programs,” saidFitness Factory owner Mike Dollard.“These classes are taught by licensedinstructors and are unique to us. Aswe approach our 25th anniversary,it’s just amazing that we’ve been ableto do it in this poor economy the last

20-years, but we’rereally hoping that withthe advent of casinosin the area this econo-my will make a bigrecovery and turnaround for everyone.”

Y oga has been a passion of JaneMorris’ since she started prac-ticing at the age of nineteen.

In January, Jane brought that pas-sion to Narrowsburg, and openedBreathe Yoga and Bodyworks. Thestudio, located in the Muse alcove onMain Street, aims to fulfill Jane’s goalsof “bringing healing modalities to thecommunity… such as Reiki, massage,yoga, mat Pilates, and Tai Chi.”

“People are drawn to the hub ofMain Street,” Morris said. “They cancome and take a yoga class, enjoybreakfast or lunch on Main Street atThe Heron or Gerard’s Grill, have a

cup of coffee at Coffee Creations, orshop at the many shops now open onthe street.”

Breathe is the third studio that Janehas opened in her years of practice.Jane focuses on making yoga accessi-

ble to all people, regardless of theirage, activity level, and familiaritywith the practice.

“I was the first yoga teacher to bebrought into Princeton MedicalCenter where I devised a class forthose who couldn’t get down on amat. We adapted our yoga practice toinclude chair yoga.”

Breathe has the same supportiveand open environment, whereinstructors work closely with stu-dents who may be struggling with ahealth challenge and keep a close eyeon their practice.

Tony Staffieri, a Narrowsburg resi-dent and student at Breathe, hasbeen attending classes post-surgeryand noted, “I find it very helpful inmy recovery.”

Currently there are five yoga class-es, two Tai Chi classes, and Reiki andmassage available by appointment.All classes are taught by certified andlicensed instructors. Jane will beadding Zumba in April, as well aschair yoga classes.

Jane also plans to have workshopsin the Spring and Summer on Shiatsumassage and drumming circles.

“Breathe is a place to gather togeth-er people doing yoga and gain thebenefits of it. It is a place to come, becentered, and exercise,”she said.

The response to Breathe has beenincredible, with some classes reach-ing 15 attendees.

“I am very happy to bring yoga tothe people of this community and itis something I plan on doing for therest of my life…” Morris said.

ty as a whole have helped me culti-vate this place…,” said Fracasse. “Thelocal community really believed in usand wanted us to succeed… I thinkwe’re here to stay and I really believewe deserve to.”

Over the years Fracasse has keptbusy renovating the building housingher gym, including the new woodfloors in the aerobics room, complete

with aerobic cushioning. “Over the years the entire building

has been renovated. From the lights,to the floors, carpet, paint and theequipment, our goal is to keep thegym up to date for our clients,” shesaid.

The Center also offers tanning, aswell as a full calendar of fitness class-es with top instructors, includingeverything from the popular Zumbawith Blanca, to Adult Fitness withAlicia. The center features a full line of fit-ness supplements and beverages,and Fracasse has even recentlyupdated some of her equipment.Besides a new sauna and new privatelockers for her growing customerbase, Fracasse has also invested inseveral brand new treadmills andelliptical machines from fitnessequipment manufacturer Precor.

VIP Crossfit in Liberty is notyour traditional gym. After all,with exercises with names like

burpees, false grip ring rows and PVCdeadlifts it certainly doesn’t soundlike your average gym. And VIPCrossfit owner/operator DustinPritzert relishes in that difference.

CrossFit, Inc. is a fitness companyfounded by Greg Glassman in 2000which incorporates high-intensityinterval training, olympic weightlift-ing, powerlifting, gymnastics, calis-thenics, strongman exercises andother disciplines.

Pritzert – who has a bachelor’sdegree in physical education fromSUNY Cortland – said that upongraduation from college, he foundthe job prospects in his chosen fieldslim as “no one was hiring teachers,”

he said. “So I had to get a job.”Pritzert eventually found work in

the human services field but nevergave up on his lifelong dream to oneday own a gym.

Then he heard about Crossfit and alittle over a year ago Pritzert decidedhe’d take the two-day Crossfit certifi-cation course, and it opened his eyes.

“I’d do a workout and collapse tothe ground in a heap, just done… andI thought ‘This is amazing.’”

So in late September Pritzert – whoalso coaches football, basketball andtrack at Sullivan-West – found a loca-tion and opened up VIP Crossfit at 9Maple Street in Liberty.

“I’m from Liberty,” he says. “It’s myhometown and I just really wanted tobring it [Crossfit] back here.”

Crossfit, as Pritzert explained,focuses on three basic movements:squatting, dead-lifting and pressing.

“These functional movements areconstantly varied and performed at ahigh intensity,” says Pritzert.

Constantly varying those move-

ments is the key to Crossfit, becauseas Pritzert asserts, “Routine is theenemy. You’ll eventually lose the abil-ity to do the movements and if you

approach with his clients, alwaysmaking sure that proper posture andform are used with each movement.“The ultimate goal here is to increasework capacity,” offered Pritzert,adding, “But the big thing I want peo-ple to know when they leave here isthat I want them to feel successful. Ifanyone ever leaves here feelingdefeated… Now, I think that’s hap-pened twice here since I opened andthat’s not what Crossfit is about.Anyone can do this.…”

“Another thing that’s great aboutCrossfit is if you go to a traditionalgym people have their earbuds inand are zoned out,” said Pritzert.“Here you’ve got people talking toeach other, you know, it’s a commu-nal thing. It’s all about the cama-raderie here, we cheer each otheron.”

Pritzert also stresses the nutritionalside of fitness and has registerednutritionist Matt Kansy come in forthree hours each week to review VIPCrossfit members’ diets and offerfeedback, as well as staging nutri-tional seminars for members. “It’s the

shortest three hours ever, saysPritzert. “He talks about food andhow it affects you. We talk aboutmaking good food choices.”“
