Determine what needs to be decided.

• What did Derek need to decide?

• Which pair of shoes to buy.

• The decide skill works best when the person already knows what kind of decision to make, so the person has time to think about it.

Elicit Information

• Where did Derek get information about his decision?

• Friends, advertisements, his mom, the salesman, etc.

• Where a person gets information about a decision depends on what kind of decision the person has to make.

• You get info from a doctor about a health decision, info from a parent or counselor about a personal decision, info from a teacher about an educational decision.

Compare Alternatives

• What were Derek’s alternatives?

• To buy either very expensive shoes or less expensive shoes.

• You should always try to come up with 2 or 3 alternatives to choose from.

Imagine the Consequences

• What did Derek think would happen if he bought each of the alternatives?

• He knew he wouldn’t get the baseball card if he bought the expensive shoes.

• He thought that he wouldn’t feel as popular if he bought the less expensive shoes.

Decide

• What did Derek decide to do?

• He bought the expensive shoes.

Evaluate the decision

• Why did Derek think he made a poor decision?

• He ended up not getting the baseball card.

• He grew out of his shoes after 6 months.

• The baseball card is now worth over $2,000.
