Research (Not Business)
• The Web needs to be studied to understand it and its impact
• The Web needs to be engineered to meet our demands
• The Web needs to be responsive to societal, political, and educational needs
What is Web Science?
• Web science, is the science of analysis and synthesis of the World Wide Web and its impact (Berners-Lee, et al, 2006)
— Multi discipline approach to understanding the web as it exists, and how to best build and engineer its future.
— Focus on new methodologies and methods, web topology, use, policies, and governance.
What is Web Science?
What is Web Science?
Web Science is a process in both understanding how the web works, and how to best engineer it.
Due to the various levels at which Web technology interacts with human society mean that inter-disciplinary approach is needed to understand it.
New methods for modeling, analyzing and understanding the Web at the various micro and macroscopic levels
What needs to be preserved and what can be improved? Web sociology
Virtual Communities, Social Network Analysis, incentive/participation, identity, Social MachinesTrust and reputationFormal/informal trust and reputation systems (i.e. Ebay vs Wikipedia)Web morality(engineering - robots.txt, legal and policy copyright, privacy, community standards, what is good behavior on the web?)

Translational Medicine
• Rapid transformation of laboratory findings into clinically focused applications
• ‘From bench to bedside and back’
Why Health Web Science?
The Web became a health related resource
• Research• Basic life science• Clinical research • Clinical practice
• Information seeking for diagnostic and treatment• For their own health• For the health of others
7
Why Health Web Science?
• Social Support• Financial Support• Governance; policy, privacy, trust,
enforcement• Violations - Issues of privacy, abuse,
security
The dark side
Health Web Science
Health Web Science’s scope parallels that of Web Science but with a health remit- to understand how the web shapes and is shaped by medicine and healthcare and individuals.
• Studies the Web and technologies that use the Internet, their emergent properties and how these are being and can be harnessed or held in check, and by whom, to benefit society in the area of human health.
• Studies how the Web can be engineered or developed in relation to health, medicine and healthcare.
Times have changed
• The end of the blockbuster era • The right treatment1 to the right
patient at the right time• Drug development cost too much• Expect medicine to cure all• Aging population• Increasing health care costs• Technology (Web and Mobile)• Marketing drugs to consumers (US)• Shifts (see next slide)

The Singularity
10
“While it took 2,300 years after the first report of angina for the condition to be commonly taught in medical curricula…
the trend still appears to be linear, approaching the axis around 2025.”
The Healthcare Singularity and the Age of Semantic Medicine, Michael Gillam, et al, The Fourth Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery Tony Hey (Editor), 2009
Discussion
• What does health care 2025 look like?
• What does a student or grad student in 2025 need
to know to meet the demands of a new “health
care system”?
• How will the population have changed?
• What tools and methodologies will they need to
know?
• What are the boundaries of Health Web Science?

What Is Web Science?
22
Web Science is the science of decentralized information systems. It is required both as a way to understand the Web, and as a way to focus its development on key communicational and representational requirements.*
