• Proper nutrition improves academic, behavioral, and emotional functioning and leads to increased math grades, lowered absenteeism and improved behavior (USDHHS. Guidelines for school health programs to promote lifelong healthy eating. MMWR Weekly Report. June 14, 1996).

• Students who are more physically fit are more likely to do well on state standardized tests, have better attendance, and have fewer disciplinary problems at school (Texas Education Agency. Physically Fit Students More Likely to Do Well in School. 2009).

• Mental health, teen pregnancy, chronic conditions, and dental disease are top health concerns that affect Attendance (In Class, Ready to Learn? Why and How to Improve Student Attendance)

• In the National Health Interview Survey, children rated by their parents as having poor health are seven times more likely to miss 11 or more school days a year due to injury or illness than children rated by their parents as having good health (Dey & Bloom, 2005).

Work with the school nurse (when possible) on making sure students are up to date with their immunizations

Host a health fair and invite community agencies to present(ex. AltaMed, Dental offices, Nutritionist, etc)

Invite the school nurse, district nurse, to present on healthy habits/health topics

Make a chart reflecting the number of absences for each reason given (ex. 10 absences for cough, 15 absences dental visits, etc.)

PROFICIENT/ADVANCED ATTENDANCE:•Conduct an activity for students with proficient/advanced attendance through the month of October (e.g. decorate a thank you card to parents for helping them maintain advanced attendance) •Issue incentive to students with perfect attendance for the month of October

BASIC ATTENDANCE:•Implement a Student Attendance Challenge where Basic students can earn a special treat for having perfect attendance for the month of November •Send a warning letter home to parents for students with 3-4 absences since August

BELOW/FAR BELOW BASIC ATTENDANCE:•Send an excessive absence letter to parents reminding them not to take extended vacation•Refer students to COST to provide comprehensive services

BASIC ATTENDANCE:•Implement a Student Attendance Challenge where students can earn a special treat for having perfect attendance in the month of November•Conduct student check-ins to review attendance expectations with students that can move up to proficient attendance by 75th instructional day
