This screening tool is three times more effective than mammography alone at detecting cancer in dense breast tissue. When cancer is detected early, patients can be treated with less invasive measures and recover faster. Dense breasts have more tissue than fat, and breast tissue and tumors both appear white on mammogram (left side of image). This can result in cancer going undetected or in false positives that require further testing. With MBI, a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein and travels to areas with high metabolic activity, like that generated by a tumor. A gamma camera then captures images of those areas. (right side of image). The process was developed by a team at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, led by Dr. Deborah Rhodes, associate professor of medicine, and Dr. Michael O’Conner, a nuclear physicist. For more information, talk with your primary care provider or call 608-392-9822. Practice mindful eatingWhen’s the last time you really enjoyed a meal? If you’re like many people, you often eat at your desk or in front of the TV while multi-tasking. Instead, try mindful eating.Mindfulness involves focusing intently on the present – what you’re feeling or sensing in each moment, even while eating. The practice of mindful eating allows you to slow down and savor your food, which can help prevent overeating. How? It takes up to 20 minutes for your brain to register the chemicals that let you know when you are no longer hungry. Slowing down helps your brain catch up to how full you’re feel-ing.Take a moment before eating and think of the food you are about to eat as fuel for your body. Remind yourself that you would like to feel satisfied, not stuffed.

65Plus Members:Understanding Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, each year you have an opportunity to review your coverage and make changes. Between October 15 and December 7, 2018 anyone can join, switch, or drop a Medicare drug plan. This annual election period is a time for you to review your current prescription drug coverage and make a change for January 1, 2019.To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a plan run by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare. Health Tradition does not offer Medicare Part D coverage, but there are resources to help provide you with an unbiased view of all available Medicare Part D plans in your area. You can contact Medicare directly at 800-633-4227 to speak with a Medicare Agent or the Wisconsin Part D Prescription Drug Helpline at 855-677-2783. You may also contact the Aging and Disability Resource Center in your county:

Women’s Health RightsUnder the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, group health plans that provide coverage for mastectomies are also required to cover reconstructive surgery and breast prosthesis (such as implants) following a mastectomy. Under this law, members of Health Tradition Health Plan receive coverage for the following mastectomy-related procedures:

» Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed

» Surgery and reconstruction of the unaffected breast to produce

a symmetrical appearance» Breast prosthesis (artificial

substitute)» Treatment for physical complications

of all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedema

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is mailing new Medicare cards with a new, unique Medicare Number instead of a Social Security number to prevent fraud, fight identity theft and keep taxpayer dollars safe. Benefits and coverage will stay the same; only the cards will change. The new cards will be mailed on different timeframes across the United States. Citizens in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa will get their new cards after June 2018. Medicare won’t call you about your card, so beware of scams. If someone calls you unexpectedly saying they “work with” or represent Medicare and need your card number or other personal information, hang up! Medicare will only call you if you’ve called them and left a message or if a representative said that someone will call you back.Make sure your mailing address is up-to-date. If you need to update your address, visit your online Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount or call 1-800-772-1213. For more information about your new Medicare Card, visit go.Medicare.gov/newcard.

A Well-Rounded Fitness RoutineDon’t Forget Strength and FlexibilityRunning, walking, biking – all great ways to get fit and healthy. But there’s more!“A well-rounded fitness program also includes strength and flexibility training,” says Susan Karpinski, a Health Promotion Coordinator at Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, Wisconsin.“This is especially true as we get older,” Karpinski says. “Strength training helps build the muscles needed for any activity. Strong muscles help with injury and fall prevention, muscle coordination and posture. Strength training also helps with weight loss. An increase in muscle tissue boosts your metabolism and calorie burn.”Round out your fitness program with the addition of a full body dynamic stretching routine. It will help increase your flexibility and improve your ability to move freely with little effort during any activity. “No equipment is necessary to get started,” Karpinski says. “Your body weight and gravity are great training tools to be used any time, any place. A comprehensive fitness routine will help you build strong bones, improve your mood and increase your energy,” Karpinski says.

Aim for 2 times/week.Try push-ups, planks and other

body-weight exercises with little to no equipment needed.

Use proper techniqueto avoid injury. Visit mayoclinic.org

and search “strength training” for how-to videos.

Don’t hold your breath! Inhale and exhale fully with

each repetition to avoid straining and injury.
