D O V E R - M a k e B i g Change is pleased to an-nounce their partner-ship with Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and the Wentworth-Douglass Foundation who have sponsored the installa-tion of 11 sunscreen dis-pensers throughout the Dover and Portsmouth area.

“We’re thrilled to have Wentwor th-Doug lass Hospital and the Went-worth-Douglass Foun-dation as the first New Hampshire based hospi-tal to join the Make Big Change movement,” said Executive Director Lau-rie Seavey. “We hope that this initiation will inspire other hospitals through-out the state to come on board and help us in our mission of spreading the education and preven-tion skin cancers. Only we can protect our skin. Together we can make big change.”

“We are excited to be a part of the “Make Big Change” initiative,” said Sheila Woolley - CNO/VP Patient Care Services of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. “The initia-tive clearly aligns with Wentwor th-Doug lass Hospital’s philosophy of wellness regarding pre-ventative activities and encourage sunscreen use to avoid sunburns. Pre-vention strategies such as this support WDH’s mission to help families attain their highest level of health. “

These initial 11 units are set to be installed at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Do-ver, the Jenny Thompson Outdoor Pool in Dover, Prescott Park in Ports-

The following was brought to you by Dermatology & Skin Health of Dover, NH.

Summer is in full force. The living? Well you know what they say… It’s easy. Summer is the season we spend outdoors. It’s the season we celebrate. It’s also a season we need to take seriously in regard to skin protection. You know the basics: Don’t get sun-burned, look out for ticks, keep hydrated, etc.

Sometimes “easy” takes work. What you may not be thinking about is the po-

tential of phytophotodermatitis. And let’s be honest with each other: Why would you? That’s a massive word.

Phytophotodermatitis is a dermatitis caused after the skin is exposed to photosensitizing compounds in plants and then exposed to sunlight.

Okay, let’s break that down into simpler terms…Think about that fruit salad you’re prepping on the

deck for the incoming party. Think about those limes you’re planning on pulping for a poolside margarita. Think about the marinades you’re whisking up for items you’re tossing on the grill…

Many common plants including citrus fruits (lem-ons, limes, oranges, etc.), something as innocent as celery, or herbs such as dill and parsley, contain these photosensitizing compounds which cause phytophotodermatitis.

In short, phytophotodermatitis is a chemical burn – it’s the hypersensitivity of the sun blasting its UV rays upon your exposed, innocent skin.

It’s important for a physician to be aware of phy-tophotodermatitis because it may often be misdiag-nosed as other skin conditions including:

• Fungal infection.• Cellulitis. • Allergic contact dermatitis.• And even, get ready for it, child abuse.Yikes.

What to look for:• General redness of the skin.• Irregular irritation.• Blistering. • Hyperpigmentation, or brown spots, which ap-

pear up to a week later and can last for several months.

How to Deal it:The obvious answer is to be cognizant of exposure

to citrusy fruits while in the sun. But here are more specific modes of remediation:

• Don’t handle fruit / mix drinks in the sun.• Wash your hands after handling fruits and veg-

etables.• See a doctor for a prescription-strength hydro-

cortisone cream.• Seek an MD prescribed bleaching agent for the

hyperpigmentation. Phytophotodermatitis isn’t going to kill you. But

it can cause some serious discomfort, and can even lead to the discoloration of your skin. This is the season to celebrate. As a part of the celebratory sen-timent, let’s practice safe handling when it comes to fruits and other plants that may contain compounds that don’t behave nicely when mixed with the sun. Okay?

What Is Phytophotodermatitis?

Look in the mirror. Look around at other people when you walk around the grocery store. Do you see happiness? Do you see a lot of laughter and joy? Or do you see people who are busy? Not just busy, but overwhelmed. We run around, filling ev-ery moment with….stuff. More practices for the kids, more errands, more work, more, more, more. But to what end? Are we happier and healthier? Or do we consume more stuff, to try and make ourselves happy?

There has to be more. It may seem to be counter-intuitive, but sometimes to improve your own life, it’s best to improve other people’s lives. Your an-swer may be in volunteer-ing. Now, I know we hear

Your Health is in Your Hands

by Dr. graham Moneysmith, Dc.Contributing Writer

this message enough that we generally have two re-sponses: 1) we ignore it, because we feel inundat-ed by the amount of times we are asked to help or 2) we get discouraged and think that the needs are so big, what could one person do?

The answer is this: yes there is a lot of need, but seriously, we need to take care of other humans, and yes you are only one per-son, but every bit of help matters. Especially to the person being helped. Further, it may seem un-likely, but maybe you’ll need help in some form someday. It even helps you now. People who vol-unteer feel connected to something bigger and enjoy possible benefits like increased self-esteem and improved happiness levels (helpguide.org).

The truth is giving and volunteering are awe-some because they help other people, but it also makes us healthier. Yes, not just happier, but lit-erally healthier. The Cor-poration for National and Community Service re-leased “The Health Bene-

fits of Volunteering: A Re-view of Recent Research” in 2007. It “documents major findings from more than 30 rigorous and longitudinal studies that reviewed the relation-ship between health and volunteering…” (www.nationalservice.gov). The findings were amazing. People who volunteer had more longevity, greater functional ability, less depression, and less in-cidence of heart disease. Truly it demonstrated that one must give to receive. Most volunteers don’t give and share for their own health gains. The majority may not even be aware that they get health benefits from giving of themselves. They do it, because they want to, which is so cool. The lesson for myself, and all of us, is that if you want to improve the world around you, make life better for others. In order to live a healthier life one must simply begin to give more. Give of your time, money, talents, or whatever else you have to share. There

“I suered from lower back pain for several years and during that time I would have episodes where I would be in debilitating pain and would have to rest for days because of heavy lifting or strenuous activities. Since I enrolled in the corrective care program I have not missed any days of work because of back pain and recovery time from strenuous activities has been reduced signicantly. I feel that my overall health has improved and I nd myself with less day to day pain since starting the corrective care. The hours are exible and I nd myself enjoying making it to my ap-pointments. I would recommend this program to anyone that suered from back pain from daily activities because it has worked for me.”

“A Matter of Balance”– For many older adults,

the constant fear of fall-ing can prevent them from leading an active and healthy li festyle. Aimed at encouraging local seniors to get out and enjoy life while re-ducing their fall risk, a free, eight-week class at the Lakes Region Visit-ing Nurse Association (LRVNA) headquarters in Meredith is set to begin this summer.

Based on the award-winning program, A Mat-ter of Balance, the class-es are being provided by Elder Services Commu-nity Action Program of Belkap-Merrimack Coun-ties, Inc. Classes will take place on Tuesday mornings starting Au-gust 4th and concluding on September 22nd. All of the classes will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 am. Though the program is free for any interested adults aged 60 or older, donations to the LRVNA are gratefully accepted. Since space is limited, advanced registration is required. To reserve a space call LRVNA at (603) 279-6611.

LRVNA Executive Di-rector Cheryl Gonzalo and Office Administra-tor Mary Elliard recently became certif ied pro-gram coaches, thanks to a grant from the state Division of Public Health Services. Gonzalo said that A Matter of Balance is extremely beneficial to seniors as it helps them learn how to reduce their fall risks at home, exercise safely, increase activity and learn how to view falls as control-lable.

“Too often we see se-niors missing out on a full and active life be-cause the fear of falling becomes overwhelming,” Gonzalo said. “But just about everyone has the ability to improve their balance, strength and flexibility, with the prop-er training.”

The Lakes Region Vis-iting Nurse Association is located at 186 Wauk-ewan St. in Meredith. For more information call 603-279-6611 or visit www.lrvna.org

We spend big money trying to get healthy and combat disease. Many people spend their days crushed by depression, poor health, and less

“While modern training methods involve equipment like barbells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just your body’s own weight, nothing else,” he says.

Whether you’re crunched for time or crunched for space, don’t let these cir-cumstances prevent you from getting a great workout. Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in
