FEATURE STORY

SMALL CHANGES LEAD TO BIG RESULTSA MEMBER’S DEDICATION TO A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE DRAMATICALLY LOWERS HIS RISK FOR DIABETES.

Eric Friedman was already walking and watching his diet.

But Eric, 62, felt like he wasn’t making any real progress. His weight was continuing to creep upward, and even worse, he was classified pre-diabetic.

“What I was doing wasn’t really working,” said Eric, who’s been a Kaiser Permanente member since 2000. “I didn’t have a good plan, and I wasn’t getting any significant results.”

In early March, however, he got an email about a Kaiser Permanente class on diabetes prevention at Crescent Center in Tucker, and he took the plunge.

“I was ready to make the necessary changes,” he said. “I was ready to have some success.”

His instructor, Tammie Hopkins-Leady, agreed.

“With Eric, once he had the tools — and then started using the tools — that made all the difference,” she said. “Typically, progress doesn’t happen when people get the tools; it’s when they start applying them.”

Eric started tracking his food and measuring his activity with a Fitbit — a sophisticated pedometer, that allowed him to not only note how long he was walking, but the intensity.

“I always tried to walk about six days a week,” he said. “And that hasn’t really changed, but what I found is that I needed to walk faster, walk a little harder and put in more exertion. The difference was illuminating.”

Now, he walks for about two miles for 40 to 45 minutes, with a daily Fitbit goal of 11,000 steps.

Improving his knowledge of diet also made a tremendous difference. The class specifically requires that students track and budget their fat grams. Too often, Tammie says, class members greatly underestimate how much they are actually eating.

Page 5: Healthy Living Catalog January - June 2018 · 2018. 1. 5. · “I think once Eric saw how many fat grams were in the foods he was eating, it changed how he thought about his diet,”

“I think once Eric saw how many fat grams were in the foods he was eating, it changed how he thought about his diet,” she said.

Eric agreed.

“I’ve never been that much into fast food,” he said. But he recently attended a wedding and decided to stop by a fast food chain while traveling. “I could not get over the number of fat grams in a quarter pounder with cheese…. I really believe that awareness is two-thirds of my success.”

That success is pretty impressive. Since he’s been in the class, Eric has dropped almost 25 pounds, and his glucose level is way down. In fact, it’s so far down now that his A1c level is in the normal range.

And his progress continues as he stays a regular participant in the class. A huge motivator of his success has been the bond between the students in the class. “Truly there was something special about this class,” he

said. “We’re a really good group with a lot of interaction. It’s fun and it’s motivating.”

Tammie, his instructor, agrees. “This group has remained stable with about 15 people,” she

said. “They have truly formed a supportive community. There’s an attitude of, ‘Well, if they can do this, I can do it too.’ That’s ideal for progress.”

Eric says there are still challenges — weekend eating and road eating when he and his wife travel. “I do worry about slipping backward,” he said. “But I’ve also learned it’s important to cheat a little bit, too.“

He points out, for example, that pizza used to be a regular part of his life — but “now it’s a treat, not a weekly indulgence.” And he also

acknowledged that Mondays tend to be his heaviest day, but now he knows

how to balance that by getting serious about his lifestyle the rest of the week.

“The payoff is worth it,” he said. “And it’s harder to keep on a bad track when you really have this newfound awareness.”

TOP 3 TIPS FOR FELLOW MEMBERS

1. Eat a well-rounded breakfast. Use those calories to fuel your day instead of loading them in at the end of the day.

2. Track your food and exercise progress. Set a bar of achievement for walking.

3. Consider making your exercise routine more robust if you’re not making any progress and consider a class so you get motivation from others with similar goals.

ERIC FRIEDMAN

TOP 3 TIPS FOR MEMBERS

1. Come to a class with an open mind and an eagerness to learn.

2. Take little steps of change — don’t try to make big leaps all at once.

3. Write everything down so you can see exactly what your healthy lifestyle looks like and how you have made positive changes over time.

Improving Your SleepCOST: $0

You Must Pre-Register — Non-members welcome*

There are no easy or instant cures for chronic insomnia. Overcoming insomnia involves making changes in your daily behavior.

Many people abandon a behavioral technique after two or three nights if it doesn’t produce an immediate change in their sleep. This course will require time, patience, and persistence. Although the changes resulting from behavioral interventions will take longer than just taking a pill, they will also last longer. These changes are more enduring, more effective, and safer than sleep medications.

Mindfulness for BeginnersCOST: $0

You Must Pre-Register — Non-members welcome*

Through sitting and gentle movement exercises, learn proven techniques to connect more fully with the present by focusing awareness on your breath, body sensations, emotions, and thoughts. These mindfulness practices have been shown to improve attention, reduce stress, decrease reactivity to emotion, enhance mood, decrease anxiety, and improve overall well–being. Please dress in comfortable, loose clothing, and bring a pillow or towel and water.

Early Detection of Lung Cancer ScreeningCOST: $0

You Must Pre-Register — MEMBERS ONLY

NOTE: Please note that registration for this class is NOT through the Health Line. Register through a referral from your primary care physician or by calling 678-340-8104. Participants will need a referral from their physician and must meet criteria for screening:

• Current or former smoker (quit within last 15 years)• Between ages 55-80

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer. More people die from lung cancer each year than from breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Detecting lung cancer early can mean easier treatment and a better cure rate. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and even former smokers have elevated risk factors for years after quitting. If you would like to be proactive and get screened, contact your primary care physician to request a referral for a lung cancer screening. You will be contacted by the instructor to verify screening criteria and confirm enrollment. Call 678-340-8104 with questions or for additional information.

HEALTHTIP

Some days, life lobs lemon after lemon. Motivating yourself to stay positive in the midst of turmoil is a valuable skill that separates the good from the great. Here’s how to make the best of whatever comes your way.

• Be flexible. Staying focused on your intended tasks while shifting to accommodate changing priorities is a vital strength for career success.

• Put on your thickest skin. View disappointment as an opportunity to learn, then either persist or change course.

• Think positively. If the good vibes aren’t coming your way, send them out yourself. An uplifting spirit is contagious for everyone.

Alzheimer’s: Understanding BehaviorsCOST:$0

You Must Pre-Register — Non-members welcome*

Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavioral triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.
