There are 3 types of veins commonly treated at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology:Varicose Veins • Spider Veins • Reticular Veins

Varicose veins are the rope-like veins that often form on the legs. These veins are usually the result of a weak vein valve that is allowing blood to collect in the vein. They are increasingly common as you age and being overweight increases the risk of developing them.

Spider veins differ from varicose veins in that they are quite a bit smaller. They tend to resemble branches of a tree or a spider web and are fairly close to the surface of the skin. How many treatments are needed?

Dr. B: Depending on the device and the amount of fat present, the reduction is usually 25-40% with one or two treatments. I think with a single treatment, the CoolSculpt is most effective, but that device can’t be used in all body areas. The other devices also work well but may require two to four treatments, depending on the amount of fat and how much correction the patient desires.

What is better, regular tumescent liposculpture surgery or non-invasive methods?

Dr. B: Tumescent liposuction gives the best result with one treatment because we can remove much more fat (close to 75% or more) and tighten the skin with laser. It is actually sometimes less expensive for larger patients who want multiple areas treated. It is an easy, safe surgery for the patient with quick healing. However, many patients prefer to go the non-invasive route. We explain both options and fees for patients and help them choose which is best.

What exactly does non-invasive body contouring mean?

Dr. B: This means reducing a bulge of fat with an energy source applied to the body without surgery. The newest device, Vanquish, doesn’t even need to touch the body.

What devices are available at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology?

Dr. B: We have all the most effective devices including CoolSculpting which freezes the fat, TruSculpt, and Vanquish which work by radiofrequency waves, and Liposonix which is an ultrasound device. The later four all heat the fat cells and cause a slow cell death. All give permanent results.

Which device works best?

Dr. B: The reason we have so many devices is that some work better in certain body areas than others, and some are limited by size and can’t be used everywhere. The doctor determines which device will work best for a given area in a given patient. Combination treatments with more than one device may be needed in the same patient for different areas, such as arms, hips and abdomen.

Every few years, new technology emerges that shakes up the dermatology community. In 2005, Fraxel resurfacing came on the scene as a game-changing technology. In 2009, CoolSculpting brought us a new procedure to reduce fat. In 2013, the latest procedure to change the landscape is Ultherapy— a face and neck treatment that creates a brand new category in aesthetics: non-invasive tissue lifting. Ultherapy enables dermatologists to direct ultrasound waves under the skin to target the same tissue addressed in surgery. This heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin.
