Volume 1, Number 2 November 2015 Heart, Mind and Spirit – news from MacKillop Catholic College Dear MacKillop families and friends of our College As this Newsletter is distributed, the Church community is commencing the Advent Season; four weeks of expectant preparations for the celebration of the birth of the Saviour with the Christmas feast. There is a very ‘Advent’ feel about our College, just now. Preparations are in full swing; the buildings are racing to completion; school uniforms and backpacks are being collected; and children are excited about their new school (as are we!). For some of our little ones, the advent of their new school is a like Christmas on a stick. It is often said that Christmas is for children. While this clearly is not exclusively the case, it is true that the joyous simplicity, spontaneity and sense of wonder so often exhibited by children can lead us into the experience of all that is at the heart of this magnificent season. I recall fondly a special encounter I shared with our eldest daughter when she was about three. We were going through the night time ritual of stories, teeth and bed. Tucked into bed we were praying our ‘God bless … Nana and Granddad, friends at kindy … …’ In the midst of this Matisse asked a question which would not be unexpected from a two year old. “Where’s God?” she asked. “God’s everywhere” I replied. “How can God be everywhere?” was her curious response. “Well … God’s in everyone’s heart.” “How can God be in your heart?” “Um … well … um … you know when Mum and Dad say to you that we love you?” “Yes …” “And you tell us back that you love us too?” “… yes” “And you know that feeling you get inside?” “Oh, yes! The warm of God!” The warm of God!’ … out of the mouth of babes a whole semester course in ‘existential spirituality’ in a single phrase!

Heart, Mind and Spirit – news from MacKillop Catholic College

Dear MacKillop families and friends of our College As this Newsletter is distributed, the Church community is commencing the Advent Season; four weeks of expectant preparations for the celebration of the birth of the Saviour with the Christmas feast. There is a very ‘Advent’ feel about our College, just now. Preparations are in full swing; the buildings are

racing to completion; school uniforms and backpacks are being collected; and children are excited about their new school (as are we!).

“Well … God’s in everyone’s heart.” “How can God be in your heart?”

“Um … well … um … you know when Mum and Dad say to you that we love you?”

“Yes …” “And you tell us back that you love us too?”

“… yes” “And you know that feeling you get inside?”

“Oh, yes! The warm of God!” ‘The warm of God!’ … out of the mouth of babes a whole semester course in ‘existential spirituality’ in a single phrase!

That’s it of course; the knowledge and experience of being loved and being wanted no matter what, and of belonging somewhere and with someone is the core personal ‘religious experience’ of Christianity. That knowledge and experience coming from God is made real for us through the person of Jesus of Nazareth, present to us still through the power of God’s Spirit. The Christmas feast is our annual encounter with this truth. When it sinks home - year after year; again and again - it has the power to change our lives. We can come to the realisation that we are not alone, that life is not a trap, that we are loved and are worthwhile and are valued for who we are. While from one angle it looks like a truth for individuals (i.e.: ‘it’s true for me’), the Christian experience of God is always at the same time corporate; we are called to live with and for one another. What we believe about ourselves – our personal love-ability and worthwhile-ness – we are called enact communally. Christmas reminds us to engage in deliberate acts of other-centeredness. The angels heralded to the shepherds, “We bring you news of great joy for all the people!” And that joyous news was that ‘God so loved the world he sent his only son … so that we might have life, and have it to the full!’ As you share the many blessings offered through the Christmas season, I pray, beneath it all, you experience something of the wonder of the warm of God! And may that ‘warm of God’ be an everyday experience for all of us at MacKillop. God bless! And Merry Christmas! Luke Reed : College Principal

Planning Ahead – looking to the possible commencement of Year 7 in 2018

We are in the process of planning for the expansion of the College to have facilities ready for Year 5 and Year 6 in 2018 and 2019. Design and planning will occur in 2016 with construction in 2017. We have already received a great deal of feedback from families requesting Secondary options be available as soon as possible. In response, we are exploring the possible early expansion into Secondary School in 2018 (Year 7). Students who are currently (2015) in Year 4 and Year 3 would be ready to begin Secondary School (Year 7) in 2018 and 2019 respectively. MacKillop's case for the early commencement of Secondary School would be strengthened by expressions of interest from local families keen to have a secondary school option at MacKillop from 2018. We would appreciate it if interested families would provide us details of children they would strongly consider enrolling at MacKillop if the Secondary School option was available. An on-line confidential form is available at http://goo.gl/forms/bWcjfpWidL . A separate on-line form for each individual child is required. Completing the on-line form is for planning purposes only and does not commit families to enrolling their children at MacKillop Catholic College. All information provided is handled confidentially in accord with the Privacy Policy of Cairns Catholic Education Services. The Privacy Policy can be accessed at http://www.cns.catholic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Privacy.pdf

A Woman With A Heart For Mission : prayers from Australian children God calls each of us to wholeness of life; and enables us to grow towards that wholeness to the love, support, encouragement and example of others. In acclaiming Saints among us, the Church community affirms that God is active in our midst. We see in Mary MacKillop a shining example of faithfulness, love and resilience. We look to this Australian woman as an exemplar of being a disciple of Christ. Mary lived out her discipleship within her family as a girl and young woman, and later as a Religious Sister and an educator. We are called to discipleship of Jesus in the unique contexts of our own lives. Here in this prayer, young Jaida finds in Mary MacKillop inspiration to be active, welcoming and resilient.

More prayer of young Australians are collected in this volume:
