We all tend to worry about the academics and we should be concerned and diligently teach them to our chil- dren. However when you home school there is a very important element to your teaching that you shouldn’t leave out. Biblical wisdom is of utmost importance. Here are some of the main Biblical leaders and references to study with your children from the Life Application Study Bible: Joseph was a wise leader. His story begins in Genesis 37 / He practiced wisdom by preparing Egypt for a major famine. He helped rule Egypt Acts 7:10 Moses was a wise leader. His story begins in Exodus 2. Moses learned all the Egyptian wisdom then graduated to God’s lessons in wisdom to lead Israel out of Egypt. Acts 7:20-22 Joshua was a wise leader. His story begins in Joshua 1. Joshua learned by observing Moses, obeyed God, and led the people into the promised land. Deuteronomy 34:9 David was a wise leader. His story begins in 1 Samuel 16. David never let his failures keep him from the source of wisdom—reverence for God Daniel was a wise counselor. His story is in the book of Daniel. He was known as a man in touch with God. He was a solver of complex problems with God’s help. Dan. 5: 11, 12 Paul was a wise messenger. Paul wrote much of the New Testament Epistles. He spent his life com- municating God’s love to all who would listen 2 Peter 3:15-16 Christ is our Savior. He was first a wise youth who also possessed the wisdom of God. A Word to Fathers ~ Bill Stephens

Joe Fischer

Marilyn and I are grandparents. If you didn’t know that, then you haven’t talked to Marilyn for more than one minute. We are also grandparents to our homeschool community. Marilyn and I love to hear stories of how well our school graduates have done. We hear stories of college athletes, champion debaters, pro-life leaders, and on occasion, commentators on Fox News. I am as proud to have had Joe Fischer a part of our school. On Thanksgiving Day, Joe passed away after a three year battle with cancer. He was twenty-three years old. After listening to the eulogies by his pastor, mentor and uncle, one cannot help but be impressed by his accomplishments and impact. Joe was a part of our school for most of his life. He was an accomplished worship leader, song writer and artist. He was a natural leader and a dedicated Christian. Marilyn often talked about him and what an im-pressive young man he was. We are all familiar with the parable of the talents. If you translate talents into years then Joe made the best

of the few years he was given. I am sure that the same confidence that the Apostle Paul expressed was also

the confidence Joe possessed. Before Paul’s departure from the world he writes to Timothy, I have fought

the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of

righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.”

TERRA NOVA 3 TESTING

ATTENTION ALL MOMS! Terra Nova 3 testing for grades Kindergarten thru 8th will take place Tuesday, April 2nd through Thursday, April 4th. The fee for Terra Nova testing is $22.00 per child. Please make your check paya-ble to Western Christian Schools and mail to Marilyn or turn-in to Denise. On Tuesday, April 2nd, everyone will need to arrive, park and have your children to their classrooms by 8:15 am and testing will begin at 8:30 am (TEACHERS WILL NEED TO ARRIVE EARLIER FOR A SHORT MEETING AT 7:45 am – more details to follow). Testing on Tuesday and Wednesday will end around 12:00 pm and will end around 10:30 am on Thursday. The Kindergarten class will only test on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be testing at the Western Christian High School campus – 100 W. 9th St., Upland. We need every available mom to help during testing. Please arrange your schedule so you will be available to help all 3 days (or at least 1 or 2 days). To volunteer to help, please contact Denise Kross at [email protected] or you can sign-up at Friday School or Rancho Tuesday School. Contenders For the Faith

Contenders For the Faith is a boys’ group for grades Kindergarten- High School. We do have a pre-

school group as well for boys and girls of Contender leaders. The group is designed to help the boys

learn new and fun skills, grow toward being a righteous man, make friends, and have fun!

We meet throughout the school year on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 11:30 till 1:00 at Mer-

chant Park San Dimas, CA. This is right before park day.

This year we will be studying about one of the GREATEST Super Heros in our lives, our Dads. We will be

learning about Occupations and hobbies our Dads have. We have fun Father/Son outings as well as fam-

ily outings.

We are a parent led group which means every parent has to help in some way. Space is limited

to the amount of parents we have serving in the group. Helping does not require lots and lots of time.

We all pull together and limit group sizes to help meet the needs of the boys as well as the leaders.

Cost: $100.00 supply fee for the year

PLUS the cost of badges which will vary depending on the age of your child.

INTERNATIONAL PRINTING MUSEUM

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11th. Grades 2nd – 8th. This has been a long time favorite field trip for our group! Beginning with a tour through the Printing Museum’s extensive collection of working machinery, you will experience the development of the arts and technologies used to transmit ideas, including writing, pa-permaking, printing and bookbinding. From printing a Bible page on the Gutenberg Press, to visiting Frank-lin’s printing shop, even watching marvelous newspaper machines of the Industrial Revolution. Following the gallery tour, you will step into the Heritage Theatre to meet the inventive Dr. Benjamin Franklin. Frank-lin will introduce you to his many inventions and discoveries, from swim fins to bifocals and from the first lending library to the Constitution. Franklin demonstrates his static electrical generator, originally used to create a battery, as he aims to ignite young minds with the wonders of science and invention! The total tour time will be 2 hours. TIME: Please arrive by 11:15 am and the tour will begin at 11:30 am, ending at 1:30 pm. COST: $9.00 per person (both kids and adults). LA HABRA CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

THURSDAY, JANUARY 18th. Ages 2 – 8. The Children's Museum shows how im-portant play is to learning. Through play, children develop skills, express creativity, dis-cover the larger world and learn to work with others. A resource in the Southern Califor-nia community since 1977. The Children's Museum is an award winning, non-profit pub-lic museum that provides unique, hands-on educational and cultural experiences to young children. The museum features 7 galleries and 14 different hands-on exhibits, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dino-

saur topiary and historic 1942 caboose. With the assistance of a museum docent, the kids will learn about the various hands-on galleries including science, performing arts, transportation and much more during their vis-it. The tour lasts 90 minutes. Depending on the number of sign-ups, there will be one or two tour groups (35 people per group, including kids and adults), group one beginning at 11:00 am and group two be-ginning at 11:30 am. For this production, George Washington Carver – Expe-rience the remarkable true story of George Washington Carver, a humble man born in slavery, who trans-formed the agricultural industry and the lives of all Americans through his research of the lowly peanut and sweet potato. MONDAY, MARCH 12th. All ages. Legoland has designated select Mondays as Home School Days. Tickets include full day admission to Legoland and Sea Life Aquarium. Gates open at 9:00 am and close at 6:00 pm. TICKETS HAVE TO BE PAID FOR AT THE TIME OF BOOKING. So this is coming out very early so you can plan to sign-up and pay by the last week of January. Their hands-on classes al-low students to learn proper culinary trades such as knife skills, food safety, etiquette, to science, social and math skills in a fun and safe environment. Students will enjoy what they make at the end of class as well as receive the recipes to take home. This will be a 1 ½ hour class and you will be making pizzas and strawberry limeade- YUM! (Note: please

indicate when you sign-up if your child has any food allergies such as dairy, gluten, etc.). Please note, 5 year olds will need parental help during the class session. Space is limited! INLAND PACIFIC BALLET OUTREACH PERFORMANCE – CINDERELLA

THURSDAY, MARCH 22nd. Grades Pre-K and up. This performance will be held at the Lewis Family Playhouse at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. This special Outreach Performance includes: excerpts from the featured ballet (this is not a full performance); lavish sets, costumes, and lighting; audience participation activities; an awe-inspiring theater experience; and a lecture demonstrating the magic of live theater and how dancers tell a story without words. This performance features a charming cast of characters, including a fairy tale Cinderella, a pair of hilarious stepsisters and a radiant Fairy Godmother who sends Cinderella to the ball

in a glittering carriage fit for a fairy princess. Adding to the magic is the beautiful music of famous waltz king, Johann Strauss. Imaginatively choreographed, the production boasts magnificent sets and costumes, including a golden car-riage and exquisite ball gowns. IPB’s Cinderella captures the magic and romance of this classic fairy tale and is sure to delight all ages. The performance will last about 75 minutes. Please note that Lewis Family Playhouse mini-mum age limit is 3 years old (children under age 3 are unable to attend, including babies). TIME: Please arrive by 9:15 am. DAVEY’S LOCKER - WHALE WATCHING: NEWPORT HARBOR

THURSDAY, MARCH 29th. K – 9th grade. November through April is the time to view humpback whales, minke whales, gray whales, dolphins and or-cas. Enjoy an afternoon cruising Newport Harbor and out into the ocean and along the coastline in search of whales and other sea life. The cruise will go out rain or shine (if Davey’s Locker decides the weather is too extreme, the cruise will be rescheduled). Everyone should come prepared with the follow-ing: closed toed shoes, water bottles, snacks, sun protection – such as sun-screen and hats, jackets, cameras, cash if you want to purchase snacks from the galley, if prone to sea sickness, take Bonine or Dramamine at least one hour before heading out on the water.

TIME: Please arrive, park and meet at Newport Landing by 11:30 – 11:45 am. The boat will leave at 12:30 pm and will return at 3:00 pm.

COST: $12.00 per child AND per adult. $3.50 for kids ages 2 and under. Please make your check payable to CCL and write in the memo area “whale watching.”

Ave (Beach side, not the Harbor side). The cost is $1.75/hr. Give yourself plenty of time to walk from the parking lot, across the street and to Balboa Pavilion.

THURSDAY, MAY 24th. All ages. Celebrate the end of the school year at Knott’s Berry Farm! The tickets are good for the whole day and you can enjoy all the attractions. We are planning on May 24th as our field trip day, but if you cannot make that day, you can use your ticket any day from May 24th up until June 30th.

TIME: We do not have to go to the park as one group. Once we pay for the tickets, I will pick up them up at the end of May and distribute them to the families who have purchased them. Then starting June 2nd, you can use the tickets. COST: $34.00 for kids ages 3 and up AND adults. Kids under 3 are free. Please indicate ages when signing-up. (Please note, this cost does not include the parking fee, you will pay that the day you go to the park).

RENAISSANCE PLEASURE FAIRE SCHOOL DAY

FRIDAY, APRIL 13th. (This is an early bird special – you need to RSVP by Wednesday, December 27th and pay-ment must be in by Friday, January 5th). April 13th is the ONLY School Day date that is scheduled. Step back in time to the 16th century on this incredible field trip. School Day gives you and your kids the chance to experience the glory of the Renaissance Faire but with a more appropriate format and a more interactive structure. For all grade levels, ele-mentary through high school. Also, offered on School Day are workshops (which are optional). Queen’s College Staff and Tutors volunteer to provide hands-on learning workshops (for example: candle making, leatherwork, copper luminary, etc.). Workshops will vary in time from 15 minutes to an hour. All workshops are developmentally appro-priate and prices vary from $2 to $15, with the average cost at about $5 per child (please bring exact change and pay the instructors). The early bird cost is $13.00 per ticket (kids ages 5 years old and up AND per adult) BONUS: For every School Day admission purchased, you’ll receive a complementary regular season admission ticket (Cannot be used on School Day). School Day event is rain or shine – there are no refunds for School Day. You and your kids can dress in period costumes, if you lie. You must order and pay in advance for your parking pass - $10. ). She is excited to work alongside Stacy Yoshida where they will be working together to pro-vide a nurturing and fun-loving environment for all the preschoolers to learn. Our preschool class has activity stations with blocks, puzzles, crafts, pretend play, books, show-and-tell, circle time, and more. Teacher- Lisa and Kwesi Kissi-Ayittey have been homeschooling their children Sophia, 11, Seth, 9 and Daniel, 4 for four years. Lisa has a BA in Communications from Calvin College in Grand Rap-ids, MI and an MA in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. She worked as a Missionary Youth Minister at New City Kids Church in Jersey City, New Jersey for sev-eral years, as a counselor for children with behavioral challenges at the Sycamores in Altadena, CA and as an Administrative Assistant at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, CA and Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA. Lisa enjoys being organized and creative and gathering small groups together for learning, fun, food and fellowship. Lisa and Kwesi are so grateful that God led their family to homeschooling. They consider it a joy and a privilege to have such an opportunity with their children.

Course Description: Welcome to Kindergarten where learning is FUN! We believe that children can love school and look forward to learning. In the kindergarten class this year, we will be using math, reading, science and game centers where the kids will do hands-on activities that help them re-member concepts. Arts and crafts, videos, songs, snacks and exercise will all be part of our morn-ing together. We will learn about Jesus and the Bible and the kids will play with their friends. Famous Americans Teacher- Karissa Tarbell / Karissa is a credentialed teacher with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and an M.A. in Ed-ucation. Before having children, she taught 6th grade in two local public schools. After the birth of her first child, she began privately tutoring homeschool students. Her experiences with these homeschool students and desire to raise her kids up in the Lord led her and her husband to homeschooling their own children. For the past four years, she has been blessed to be both mother and teacher to her three children. Course Description: In this class, students will be learning about the lives and contributions of famous Ameri-cans. Each lesson will include a short biography about a famous American, discussion about the contribu-tions the individual made, and a hands-on activity/project. Bible Teacher- Nicole Mohr / Nicole is currently a Lead training Bible Study Facilitator, teaching events for 15 to 300 people, and she has been teaching the Word of God for over a decade. She has continued her educa-tion in child development and Biblical studies, taught 500 youth at a camp in Kenya, and served at orphanag-es. Nicole is a wife to Christ first, and to her husband, Jeff. They are very active in community affairs, serve as adoption support group leaders through a facilitation organization, and keep Christ at the center of home-schooling their 2 children. Course Description: For this school year, our focus will be digging deep into the Bible and the foundation of truth vs. lies. This will allow the children to be empowered by God’s validity through our Savior’s promises. We will learn the Biblical stance on addressing adversity through the fundamentals that Christ has entrusted us, while loving through all circumstances. Nicole will navigate the children through the Bible. Science Teacher- Stephany Maxwell is both humbled and honored to be the new Tuesday school science teacher. She attended the University of Texas at Arlington, majoring in Biology with a pre-med option. Two years ago, seeking to honor God and lead Christ centered lives, she and her husband Benjamin began the home school journey. As they study the Holy Bible it is evident it is filled with scientific facts and she is personally inspired with the truths revealed to us in the book of Job. She prays that they attain an intimate knowledge of our Glorious God as we study his creations. Course Description: We will be studying the science surrounding the days of creation (Genesis 1:1-27). I will also be incorporating several S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) projects and quiz-zes disguised as games. Physical Education Teacher- Monique Boore / Monique is a WCPSP mom of 2 current students and one WCPSP graduate. She has studied dance for 10 years, has been involved with softball, cheer, and soccer, and has knowledge of basic gymnastics. Having trained in Taekwondo for 20 years, Monique is a 4th degree black belt and has trained several national competitors and champions in this sport. She helped guide her son in becoming an elite athlete and national competitor in figure skating. Course Description: This physical fitness class will introduce your child to a variety of fitness activities and sports. Activities such as plyometrics, isometrics, calisthenics, and stretching techniques will be employed for training. Sports may include basic martial arts, baseball, volleyball, obstacle courses, and fun old-fashioned games such as kickball and four square. The importance of good nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, good sportsmanship, and a Godly attitude will be stressed.

Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm You may take the 8 week or 16 week option for Friday school (see page 21 for fees) Classes begin Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 Kindergarten: Stephanie Carrillo BS & Credentialed Teacher Kindergarteners will be learning about the world around them ...from the seasonal changes God has made in our world to plant and animal life, by incorporating story time, science, Bible, songs, and art. It will be a fun hands on learning experience!! 1st Grade: Christy Miller- 16 weeks / Credentialed Teacher This year we will be learning about a different artist each week by reading about them and completing a project in a similar style that they would have done. (Similar to the Meet the Masters program) We will be using different methods and styles with- painting, pastels, watercolor, crayons, glue, markers and anything else fun I can find. We will also be having sharing time, PE activities and snack time on the playground. Looking forward to meeting your kids!

Grade: Sherry Ryan 16 weeks Sheri has a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a M.A. in Education from Biola University, and taught 2nd grade for 6 years, before choosing to be a stay-at-home mom. She has homeschooled her children for 7 years. This year second graders will enjoy wild and whacky science experiments, fun art projects and lots of group activities to enhance and supplement the homeschool experience. 2nd graders will learn basic art terminology, explore color, patterns and textures through the use of various medi-

ums. We will also be doing seasonal crafts to encourage creativity.

3rd Grade: Maureen Bosanko 16 weeks Our class will be learning about geography and culture. As we learn we will be working on a geography lapbook that the students will bring home at the end of the year. Each week we will learn about a new country or continent. We read a literature book from the country, sample food from the country, play a game from the country and add information to the lapbook. Traci Esser / Traci has her degree in Child Development and has 15 years of experience working as a director for school age children in both Options Surround Care and the Walnut Valley USD Enrichment Program. She was also a certified trainer for the California School Age Consortium for Behavior Management. She has been homeschooling her two children for the last 7 years. Science 6th to 8th grade: Charley Cheatwood Hello, my name is Charley Cheatwood and I will be teaching science this next year. I am currently the Family Pastor at Bethany Baptist Church in Montclair, Ca. My wife, Thiam, and I have been married for 16 years and we have 3 children – Gideon, Faith, and Eden – enrolled at Western Christian’s PSP. I have taught 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade in the Ontario-Montclair School District and in the Victor Elementary School District and enjoy the elementary academic environment. I have always loved science and am looking forward to leading our classes into a hands-on discovery approach. I want students to come away thinking, “Wow, our God sure has made some fantastic things…”

Art 6th through 8th Grade: Lisa Colosimo 16 weeks per semester: 6th grade will be exploring different painting techniques throughout the year. They will be learning to mix their colors and create designs using color combinations such as: primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary harmony, split complementary harmony, and harmonious color balance. 7th-8th grade will be going more in depth in their drawing skills. They will be working on developing their shading skills to add more depth in order to produce more realistic images. They will have the choice of focusing on facial portraits, animals, still life, and geometric/perspective designs.

All students will receive a sweet treat for turning in all completed projects and at the end of each semester they will be eval-uating each others work and the top five in each grade will receive an ice cream cone for best quality of work. Since I was a kid, I’ve always preferred running around outside and getting muddy and dirty, riding dirt-bikes, four-wheelers, or playing war, to staying inside and playing video games, board games, etc. I want to share my passion with others- ignite a fire that is inside of everyone, and show your kids why God created us so complex. Tips for Preparing Your Student for College

Having a high school diploma is important but it doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to get

into college. It can be a difficult process these days. Here are 12 tips/suggestions for students

considering college entrance:

1. Plan ahead. When you know what college you want to go to, go to their website to make

sure that you are taking the courses that they recommend.

2. Align your course titles with those of Western Christian so that the colleges will recognize

what you have been doing.

3. Check the Western Christian website to see what courses CSU and UC want you to take.

4. Check these websites for more information about how to get into college as a homeschool-

homeschool/index.html (or google “How do homeschoolers get into college?”).

5. Be involved in the community so that you can talk about your experiences and the ways

6. Find out what you do well, do it, and learn how to write about it. Colleges are looking for

you to explain to them why you are “head and shoulders better” than the others who are

also applying to college.

7. Take the tests. Take the SAT. Take the ACT. Take the SAT II subject tests. Find objec-

tive ways to prove that you are who you say you are. Test taking is a learned skill. Prac-

tice, practice, practice.

8. Take AP courses and their corresponding tests.

9. Take some community college courses or enroll in the part-time program at Western

Christian. This is another way to show that you are as good a student as your mother

thinks you are.

10. Make sure that you have all the courses that Western Christian requires for a diploma.

11. Most importantly, pray for God to go before you in this whole process.

12. Remember that it is hard to get into many college programs today, so you should have

several options. Don’t put all your hopes and dreams into one program unless you have

figured out several ways to get there.

Within the unit for each peri-od, attention is given to all genres - - nonfiction, short stories, plays, novels, and poetry. Students study the classics from the Anglo-Saxon period to modern works, which have established a place in our culture. High School Biology Biology is most exciting (and most truthful) when it is taught and learned in the context of our awesome Creator. His creation certainly reflects the majesty, wisdom, and power of God. Unfortunately, secular science is often taught in such a way as to become a stumbling block to the development of our faith. Science can instead be a stepping-stone to faith – the evidence for design is everywhere, especially in Biology! This course is taught with a Creation perspective. We will use the Apologia book, “Exploring Creation with Biology”. Topics include the five kingdoms of life, the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, ecology, evolution (as a theory), as well as plant, animal, and human biology. HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY This course provides a rigorous foundation in chemistry in preparation for college-level chemistry. Topics covered in-clude significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinet-ics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. The lab period will alternate between Chemistry labs and a math tutoring time. Students often have difficultly under-standing the math that goes with each chapter, so we will focus on that every other week. We will still do at least one lab with each chapter. This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PREPARED for Algebra 1. **I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics, especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in education these days (public and private) is that stu-dents should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Alg in 7th. This works for some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade curriculum. This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics! Call me if you need to talk about any of this! Film Making (9th- 12th grade) This course is an opportunity for your student to develop their creative voice through the art of film making; guiding them from a vague idea to the polished final product. We will cover the fundamentals of the cine-matic arts. Everything from scriptwriting to casting to special effects to editing to closing credits will be dis-cussed. Your student will gain a basic understanding of this art form that can be utilized to reach, potentially, millions for the kingdom of God. This one year course will fulfill the Visual and Performing arts require-ment.

Eric “Rick” Toland is the father of five current WCS PSP students. He has a BA in English with a minor in Psychology. He holds a current California Teaching Credential.
