New Coaching Courses and Accreditation announcement from

Swimming Australia & ASCTASwimming Austral ia and the Austral ian Swimming Coaches and Teaches Association (ASTCA) are proud to jointly unvei l Austral ian swimming’s new coach education courses and accreditation levels. This init iat ive wil l strengthen coach development for our spor t, optimise per formance and aid the retention of exceptional coaches across the countr y.

The new accreditation levels are:• Development (previously Bronze)• Advanced (previously Si lver)• Per formance (previously Gold)

This redesign of the coach accreditation structure and course content addresses shor tcomings that coaches and others have presented to us through independent consultant reviews of recent years.

Fur ther, in late 2017, Swimming Austral ia par tnered with Victor ia University ( VU) to redevelop the exist ing Si lver and Gold Swimming Coach Education courses. The fol lowing year, a comprehensive research project was under taken to help define a new National Coaching Strategy for Austral ian Swimming leading into Tokyo 2020 and beyond.

With a united future vis ion for swimming coaching in Austral ia , Swimming Austral ia (SA) and ASC TA decided to modernise the coach education system – combining online modules and in-person workshops – in l ine with modern best practice across the spor t and training and education sectors.

We are al l excited about how this wil l improve our spor t and:• provide coaches with a manageable pathway of learning that ensures the step

from one level of accreditation to the next adds real educational value, with a demonstrated difference between each level ;

• provide equity of access for coaches who meet the entr y requirements based on demonstrated coaching competencies;

• help coaches build on previous learnings in a structured and modular way ;• provide coaches with oppor tunit ies to test themselves and their athletes in a

var iety of different environments and competit ions;• reinforce to the coaching community that a thirst for k nowledge and personal

development are impor tant at al l levels of coaching;• suppor t coaches to incorporate techniques to address their own coaching • welfare to optimise coaching per formance and retain great coaches.

Read the ful l New Coaching Courses and Accreditation announcement to f ind out more.

Upcoming courses can be found in our Events Calendar or on the ASC TA website.

Heartbreak for the NSW swimming community - Kenneth To passes at

26Swimming NSW is hear tbroken to announce that one of our best swimmers, Kenneth To, has passed away at age 26.

Kenneth wil l be remembered as much for his results in the pool, as well as being the true gentlemen he was outside of i t . Achieving results was a key focus for Kenneth, however, he always made sure he was there to suppor t the team and was loved by al l his teammates. His work ethic was second to none and was inspirational for al l those who trained with him.

Kenneth proudly suppor ted his School, Club, State and Austral ia and trained under Coach Matthew Brown at Tr inity Grammar School for the majority of his swimming career. He was a mult iple Austral ian Record Holder and st i l l holds the Austral ian Shor t Course Record in the 100m and 200m Individual Medley. In 2009, he came into the swimming spotl ight when he broke Ian Thorpe’s decade - old Austral ian record in the 16 Years 200m Individual Medley, swimming a t ime of 2.04.31 and went on to win multiple National Championships as an age group swimmer.

Kenneth burst onto the international scene in 2010 at the Summer Youth Olympics and Junior Pan Pacif ic Championships. Although, one of his proudest achievements would come later that year when he became Austral ia Dolphin 705 to represent Austral ia at the 2010 FINA World Shor t Course Championships.

The fol lowing year, Kenneth was selected onto the Austral ian Team once again to compete at the 2011 FINA World Championships. In 2012, he narrowly missed selection onto the London Olympic Games team, but went on to be crowned Men’s Overal l Winner in the 2012 FINA World Cup Series. That same year, Kenneth won Si lver in the 100m Individual Medley at the FINA World Shor t Course Championships. In 2013 he again represented Austral ia at the FINA World Championships and in 2014 was selected onto the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacif ic Championships Teams.

At his peak , Kenneth was arguably, pound for pound, one of the best shor t course swimmers in the world, his power at the star t and sk i l ls across al l four strokes were diff icult to match.

Ever yone who ever met Kenneth wil l have fond memories of the t ime they spent with him and he wil l be mourned across the swimming community worldwide.

Our love and deepest sympathy are with Kenneth’s family and fr iends at this extremely diff icult t ime.

We wil l miss you Kenny.

Dinner ideas for Young Competitive Swimmers

is the best option to replace their energy stores and keep them f ighting-f it !

A few dinner ideas to tr y• Chil l i con carne. Beans, lean mince, and brown r ice, with a good helping of

salad.• Baked potatoes (or even better, baked sweet potatoes) f i l led with baked

beans, tuna and sweetcorn, or chicken t ik k a, with either a salad or some extra vegetables e.g. green beans.

• Omelette made with smoked salmon, tuna, spinach, broccoli , mushrooms, tomatoes or peppers.

• Pasta or pasta bake. Tr y to go easy on the pasta content, and add plenty of meat or f ish, and vegetables.

• For those late f inishes, sometimes just a chicken salad and a yoghur t wil l be enough.

Planning is the key. I t ’s a good idea to plan main meals at the beginning of the week so k now what your chi ld wil l be eating. Tr y cook ing food at the weekend and then freezing meals ready for the week.

Talking vegetablesThe best way to eat vegetables is raw before they ’ve lost any of their nutr ients from cook ing. But i f you’re going to cook them ensure you keep the water.

This contains al l the nutr ients, vitamins/antioxidants the vegetables lost in the boil-ing/steaming process. You can use it for stock , gravy, or anything you l ike!

Microwaving fresh vegetables is one of the healthiest ways to cook them and retain the maximum amounts of vitamins/antioxidants. Don’t fr y vegetables. There’s no bet-ter way to destroy nutr ients and minerals than with superheated fat that your body wil l struggle to digest.

To keep f inding dinner ideas to help suppor t young swimmers can be diff icult . Also, what sor t of dinner your chi ld needs wil l largely depend on the t ime when they train.

I f they get in from training late at night a huge meal close to bed t ime probably isn’t a great idea. The key is to use your own judgment. You k now your k ids best.

A protein-r ich meal, with some carbohydrates – such as lots of fresh vegetables and perhaps some pasta –
