করবীপ্দ এবং ব�পােপা দুরলনই আমপালদর কপাে বথলক অলনক দূলর চলে প্গলয়লেন প্কন্তু রলয় প্গলয়লে েপালদর অসীম সপাহস, অদমযে আশপাবপাদী রীবনপাদশ্লনর এক প্শক্েীয় দৃষ্পাতি । রীবন বথলম থপালক নপা । আবপার শুরু হয় নেুন যপাত্রপা । করবীপ্দ এবং ব�পােপার রীবন বথলক আহপ্রে দৃষ্পাতিলক অনুসরে কলর যপ্দ আমরপা পথ চেলে পপাপ্র, েলবই েপালদর রিপ্ে আমরপা রিকৃে শ্রদ্পাঞ্জপ্ে প্নলবদন করলে পপারলবপা ।

অঞ্জপ্ের এই সংস্রলে করবীপ্দ ও ব�পােপালক প্নলয় রলয়লে মৃিপ্েচপারলের এক কু্দ্র সংকেন । ঈশ্বলরর কপালে রিপাথ্নপা কপ্র রিয়পাে আত্পার প্চরশপাপ্তি ।

রিপায় প্েন দশক পূে্ হলে চলেলে BATJ আলয়পাপ্রে দুগ্পা পূরপার । এই প্েন দশলক অলনক পপ্রবে্ন এলসলে রি্পানেঃ বদলশর প্বপ্�ন্ন রপায়গপার বপালরপায়পাপ্র দূগ্পা পুলরপার স্পাইলে । মূপ্ে্র অবয়ব বথলক শুরু কলর পযেপালডেে সজ্পা, আলেপাক সজ্পায় এলসলে অলনক নেুন ্পারেপা । প্থম পূরপার চে অসম্ভব রনপ্রিয় হলয় উলিলে । সব প্মপ্েলয় পুলরপালক বকন্দ্র কলর গলড় উলিলে এক নেুন অথ্ননপ্েক স্পন্দন । েপারই পপাশপাপপাপ্শ এপ্গলয় চলেলে বযেবস্থপাপনপায় উন্নপ্ে । শুরু হলয় প্গলয়লে ই-আরপ্ে, ই-ব�পাগ, ইেযেপাপ্দ নপানপাপ্ব্ নেুন বযেবস্থপা । ্ীলর ্ ীলর সপালবকী ্ রলের পুলরপার আচপার, অনুষ্পালনর রিপাসপ্ঙ্কেপা হপাপ্রলয় যপালছি । শুলনপ্ে কেকপােপার একপ্ট সংগিন েপালদর পুলরপার বপালরলটর ববশ প্কেুটপা অংশ বরলখ বদয় সপারপা বের রনপ্হেকর কপারকলম্র রনযে । েপারই মল্যে েপারপা খুঁলর বপলয়লে পূরপার স্বপাথ্কেপা । সপামপাপ্রক প্ববে্লনর সপালথ সপামঞ্জসযে বরলখ উৎসলবর রূপ বদেপালব এটপাই স্বপা�পাপ্বক, প্বলশষ কলর উৎসলবর রিপােচপাঞ্চলেযে যপ্দ বকপানও ঘপাটপ্ে নপা থপালক । নপানপা কপারলে উৎসলবর এই বদলের হপাওয়পা এখনও েপালগপ্ন সুদূর রপাপপালন আমপালদর পূরপায় । অেযেতি খুদ্র পপ্রসলর আমপালদর পূরপা েপাই ঘলরপায়পা এবং বপালরপায়পাপ্র পূরপার এক মপাঝপামপাপ্ঝ রূপ । সবপ্কেুরই বযন একটু বেপাঁয়পা েপাগপালনপা উৎসব । বসই উৎসলবর এক অপ্বলছিদযে অঙ্ আমপালদর এই অঞ্জপ্ে । এবপারও সপা্যেমে বচষ্পা করপা হলয়লে অঞ্জপ্ের পপািকলদর কপালে নপানপান স্বপালদর বেখপার সম্ভপার বপঁলে বদওয়পার । সমলয়র অ�পালব অপ্নছিপাকৃে �ূেভ্পাপ্তি থপাকলে েপার রনযে আমরপা ক্মপারিপাথ্ী ।

অঞ্জপ্ের পক্ বথলক পপািকমডেেীলক রপানপাই আমপালদর আতিপ্রক শপারদীয় শুল�ছিপা ।।

Editorial

It is very unfortunate that we started year 2018 with two consecutive shocking news. These were the sad demise of two of our beloved friends in quick succession. On 15th February, Mr. Bholanath Pal, former editor of Anjali (fondly referred to as Bhola or Bhola da) left us at a relatively early age for the heavenly abode. Within two months of Bhola’s demise, Ms. Karabi Muherjee (popularly known as Karabidi or Fui Fui) passed away at her Kolkata residence on 7th April, 2018.

Bhola lived in Japan with his family for 7 years from 2000 to 2007. During that period, Bhola was an active member of BATJ and made noteworthy contributions to its cause. He became editor of Anjali and took active part in many cultural activities. Due to his cordial nature, Bhola could make many friends. He indeed took care to maintain those relationships, even after his return to Bangalore. Everyone was truly shocked when they heard the news of his demise.

After living in Japan for almost five decades, Karabidi had to return to Kolkata due to her fast deteriorating health. She was one of the active founding members of Bengali Association of Japan. Karabidi was one of the most important people who initiated Saraswati Puja and Durga Puja in Tokyo. She also made significant contribution in publication of Anjali magazine through her diligent proofreading. She was well known and very popular in the community. She never lost connection with any Bengali who once resided in Tokyo and no matter where in the world they are currently living. Her unique character was so distinctive that her memory will always be alive with all of us. She was not keeping well for quite some time. However, her strong will force helped her to keep going. As a matter of fact, none of us were really prepared to accept her sudden demise.

Karabidi and Bhola are no more with us, but both set examples of indomitable courage and optimism for us to learn. Life never stops. It moves on perhaps with a new turn. Our tribute to them will be meaningful if we can assimilate the learning from their lives in pursuit of our own lives. In this edition of Anjali, we have compiled a special section based on our reminiscences of each of them.

BATJ had been organizing Durga puja celebration for almost three decades. During these years, drastic changes had occurred in the style of public celebration of Durga puja, especially in many places in Kolkata. Durga puja today has become a carnival, full of bright lights and festive cheer. New ideas have come up in abundance for making idols, decoration of pandals, and illumination thereof. Overall arrangement based on special theme has gained huge popularity. Puja with all other related activities is now generating a new order of vibrancy in the economy. It is also observed that efficiency of managing these events have gone up over time. E-bhog, and E-arati etc. are becoming common buzzwords these days.

Traditional rituals for these occasions are gradually losing their relevance. An organization in Kolkata uses a big portion of their Durga puja’s annual budget for humanitarian services rather than in making extravaganza. According to them, this is the essence of religion and also the best way of serving God. It is quite natural though that the form of festivity will change as the society evolves. This should not be a problem as such if the vibrancy of the festivity remains unaffected.

For various reasons, the above trend has not impacted our puja in any way. Due to various constraints, our puja is somewhere in between a cozy family type event and a public celebration. It has a little bit of touch of everything. ‘Anjali’ is an integral part of this festival. We tried our best to compile this edition with different taste of articles. We also tried our best to minimize the error. However, we beg to be pardoned, for any unintentional errors.

We are pleased to bring out our annual publication of Anjali on this auspicious occasion of Durga Puja celebration. For many years we had been creating a special section in Anjali to discuss topical theme to promote Indo Japanese cultural exchange. There is a small diversion from that practice this year. Due to the sad demise of two of BATJ’s beloved members in the beginning of this year, we decided to dedicate the special section in their memory. New era will begin in Japan next year, and Tokyo Olympic will be held in 2020. These will be major historical events in Japan. We will try to gear up to bring out publications relevant for that time.

Anjali’s continuing success is made possible by the overwhelming support of many well-wishers. The Embassy of India in Tokyo extended their gracious support for which we are very thankful. We hope to receive the same patronage in future as well. We would like to thank all advertisers who have sponsored this year’s publication.
