Heartstrings Quilt 2

An adorable quilt for a special baby, this can also be made into a larger quilt by adding another round of hearts and Log Cabins. The quilt has eight Heart blocks and sixteen Log

Cabin blocks set diagonally, with sixteen Half–Log Cabin blocks around the edges.

Materials42"-wide fabric

• 1 fat quarter each of 8 pastel prints or a total of 2 yds. of scraps for Heart blocks, Log Cabin blocks, and Half–Log Cabin blocks

• ⅛ yd. yellow fabric for Heart blocks• 1½ yds. fabric for background• 3 yds. fabric for backing • ½ yd. fabric for binding• 49" x 49" piece of batting

CuttingAll measurements include ¼" seam allowances.

From each of the 8 pastel prints, cut:• 11 strips, each 1½" x 21", for the Heart

blocks, Log Cabin blocks, and Half–Log Cabin blocks

From the background fabric, cut:• 18 strips, each 1½" x 42", for the Heart

blocks and Log Cabin blocks

• 2 strips, each 2½" x 42"; crosscut the strips into 32 squares, each 2½" x 2½", for the Heart blocks and Half–Log Cabin blocks

• 3 strips, each 3½" x 42"; crosscut the strips into 24 squares, each 3½" x 3½", for the Heart blocks and Log Cabin blocks

From the yellow fabric, cut:• 2 strips, each 1½" x 42"; crosscut the strips

into 32 squares, each 1½" x 1½", for the Heart blocks

From the binding fabric, cut:

• 5 strips, each 2½" x 42"

2. Join two 1½" yellow squares and two 1½" pastel-print squares to make a four-patch unit. Make 8 four-patch units.

3. Join a four-patch unit from step 2, a yellow 1½" square, and two 1½" x 2½" pastel-print rectangles to make the unit shown below. Make 8 of these units.

4. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of 16 background squares, each 1½" x 1½". Place a background square over one end of a 1½" x 3½" pastel-print rectangle, right sides together. Sew on the marked line; trim ¼" from the stitching line and press the seam toward the background piece. Make 8 units with a background triangle on the left and 8 units with a background triangle on the right.

5. Join one 1½" x 2½" pastel-print rectangle, one 2½" background square, and one of the units made in step 4 to make one of the following units. Repeat to make a total of 8 units with the background triangle on the left and 8 with the background triangle on the right.

6. Join one 3½" background square, a left and right unit from step 5, and one unit made in step 3 to make the following unit. Make a total of 8 units.

7. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of 16 background squares, each 1½" x 1½". Place a background square over one end of a 1½" x 6½" pastel-print rectangle, right sides together. Sew on the marked line; trim ¼" from the stitching line and press seam toward the background piece. Make 8 units with a background triangle on the left and 8 units with a background triangle on the right.

8. Join a left and right unit from step 7, a 1½" yellow square, a 1½" x 7½" background strip, and a 1½" x 8½" background strip to the unit from step 6 to complete a Heart block. Your block should measure 8½" x 8½". Make a total of 8 Heart blocks.

Log Cabin Blocks1. Gather an assortment of 36 pastel-print

strips and 12 background strips; cut the strips as follows:

Half-Log Cabin Blocks1. Gather the remaining 36 pastel-print strips

and cut as follows:

2. Make 16 Log Cabin blocks, starting with a 3½" background square and then adding pieces one at a time, from shortest to longest. Your blocks should measure 8½" x 8½".

2. Join the cut strips and the 2½" background squares to make 16 Half–Log Cabin blocks. For each block, start with a 2½" background square. Sew the strips on in order from shortest to longest.

2. Sew 8 Heart blocks, 16 Log Cabin blocks, and 16 Half–Log Cabin blocks into diagonal rows. Join the rows. Align the edge of the ruler where the strips meet and trim the edges of the quilt.

3. Layer the quilt top with batting and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

4. To make the quilt as shown on page 1, with rounded corners, trim the corners using a dinner plate as a guide. Use bias binding to bind the edges of the quilt. At each curve, pin carefully and be careful not to stretch the binding.
